My bike is easier to start when cold. As in, first kick it will usually start with the throttle in the correct position (very slightly on)

When hot, I have to really kick it over a few times. What might this be.
Air filter is clean, new spark plug with bright spark.

Cheers

Might just be down to the fuel evaporating due to heat, you need to kick it a few times to get some back in there Thinking Maybe running a bit rich? If that is the only problem then I wouldn't worry about it too much.

RANDOM DRIVEL: Petrol supplied in the winter can have a slightly higher volatility rating (called "Reed vapour pressure") since its unlikely to get hot enough to boil away. This makes it easier to start from cold but does make the bike more susceptible to warm start problems. In the summer the volatility rating is lower so the problem goes away.

I was thinking fuel evaporating but thought as it turns into vapour then it hasn't go anywhere to go apart from in the engine anyway.

I would rather it be harder to start when cold and easier when warm.

Leaning off the mixture a bit or something? Would that work?

Sorry for all the questions. Are you talking about the GS? Do you need the choke when you start from cold? Have you check the valve gaps? Is the choke working correctly? I've assumed you've already checked the plug colour and its all looking good?

You could try turning the mixture screw back a quarter turn and see if it makes a difference? Easy enough to put right again after.

Sounds like tight valves.

I haven't checked the valves. Everything else has been checked. Plug is new (last week) and is perfect brown colour.
Oil and oil filter were also changed.

How do I check the valves? I have taken the rocker covers off and I see a small flathead screw.

Can someone run me through the procedure.

Cheers Karma

EDIT: I have a 30 mile trip at 3pm so is it possible to do it before then? I don't have any feeler gauges as I found mine and its rusty so inaccurate.

rings maby worn?

as when cold they expand and when walm they contract, thus less compression = harder to start.

is there slightly less power when walm?

Surely they expand when warm?

erm according to Peter , kicker only bikes are a pig to start when hot anyway , as I was considering buying a TT600R kicker only he said well you really want electric and kick start as kickers can be a pig to start when hot.

He went on further to add that he said you have to wait for them too cool down before attempting to kick them to life again.

Confused

Metal expands when it gets warm and contracts when it cools.

Thanks for that info but I want to check the valve clearances anyway.

All I know is go to TDC, and stick a feeler gauge in the gap under the adjustment screw. I don't even know what it is supposed to be.

Don't take it a gospel, I'm working from a very old memory but I think the exhaust should be 0.13mm and the inlet about 0.08mm, slightly bigger is better than being smaller.

Your going to need some feelers or some random bits of plastic and a micrometer.

Surely if the valves were too tight you would feel it has less compression when warm?

I've found with stuff not wanting to start, especially smaller bikes its due to people fiddling with the carbs to try to get a bit more power. Make sure the mixture screw is as the manual says it should be, and that the choke isn't sticking on.
