Building a fence... and converting garden to parking spac

Question 1

Garden fence... its fucked, need a new one! Is it as simple as postcrete in wooden posts then screw the fence to the posts and trellis the top? obviously thats a very simplified description, I'm not a biulder but I am an electrician so have general "construction" skills. Just need to know if there's anything I need to consider / do extra to posts + panels + decorative tops

Question 2

Front garden, currently walled off. have numerous parking issues so I'm considering taking out the side wall digging out two wheel sized trenches, lining and gravelling them so we can park a car on the front garden.... simple as that?? it's a grass lawn area, the wall is pretty much a stand alone so no real hassle removing it.. just some bushes to remove and its clear access from the drive into the garden...

only thing is you'd have to reverse into the garden from the road, there is a dropped curb but youd prob have to go slightly up the kerb to make the 90* turn. tbh i have to go up on the grass to get my truck in the drive anyway so don't see this as a big issue?

Any tips/advice much appriceated, like special tools needed etc?

Well, believe me if I can put a fence up, by myself I might add, you'll have no problem I only had to put in 2 6ft panels, 3 posts but it was a right palaver digging the holes for the posts as one was next to a hedge with big roots! Used the quick set cement stuff which is a bit pricier than normal cement, but still cheaper than those fancy metal post holders (metpost?) I was doing it on the cheap, hence doing it by myself! Only mistake I made was I got too eager and fixed the panels on before the posts had set properly, so the middle one moved and I've yet to re-do it!

No idea about the garden, but I think if you've got a dropped kerb you can usually get away with cars on the front wherever you like.

How long do you want the fence to last? Wooden post straight into the ground will rot sooner or later. For a long lasting job you ought to look towards concrete posts.

Use post spikes and put the wooden posts into them. get them from B&Q for about £5 each.

Treated wooden posts in concrete (or you can f*ck the concrete off and just dig holes (don't need to be huge, just twice the size of the post maybe) and pack the posts in by tamping the smashed bricks from the wall down around it, just as strong as concrete, then cover the top with soil). Tamp, add rubble, tamp etc. (Don't forget to check the levels as you go).

Treated wood is good for 20 years. Nail the rails to the posts. To make it vandal proof put 2 nails in a 'V' shape ( \ / ) rather than one nail staight in to it ( | ). That way you can't just pull the fence down so easy

If you are doing it on a budget then just plonk the wooden posts straight into the ground. I would stretch to concrete if nothing else though especially if it is a big tall fence.

Use a bit of your old fence across the edge of the kerb, angle it slightly if you have the tools - this is cheaper than getting the council to give you a dropped curb.

DO NOT use metaposts. They are shite, and your fence absolutely WILL fall down after a year or so. You just hammer them in, they are for numptys who can't be arsed to do a proper job. After a couple of puffs of wind, they loosen.

We've just checked the deeds, no mention of the front garden so we're assuming its okay.. mums going to check with someone next week though (she's an estate agent so has people to ask etc..)

Tomorow I am doing the smaller of the two fences I'm building.. this one is on a concrete area.. I presume with concrete areas I DONT need gravel boards? Going for wooden posts bolted to the floor and to a 1ft raised concrete area so they will be pretty damn secure. 5ft panels.

By the way.. normal fence panels nail inbetween each post....is it possible to secure these to the flat edge of the posts? so all the posts are on the back of the fence and the panels run in front of them butting up to each other? if that makes any sense at all?

So obviously the left side needs to match this.. this wall/fence seperates our drive from the garden... there is an approx 1ft drop down from the drive into the garden.

IF I build with the posts on the garden level then I'll need to cut the door down at the bottom to allow for a step? whereas if I can put the posts on the garden level but then fit the panels on the drive side so the panels are 1ft higher than the base of the posts the door will open at drive level which will allow for the step....

The thing with this is I need to make this fence match the other fence, so can this be done with panels?

does that make any sense at all cos im not sure it does??

I'm gonna go rip the wall down now, I'll get pictures it might make more sense!!

Why did this get moved to Dear auntie bcf? it's more random banter than is dear aunty bcf but still..

I've now removed the old wall completely and the old trellis that was in place... also started pressure wash cleaning the concrete drive, amazing difference already!

we've confirmed going ahead with the front garden modifications so I'm now building the fence in place of the old wall which means I'm building directly onto concrete. makes things a bit easier!
