i fitted a new engine to a bike similar to mine (the skyjet)which has gone from 124cc to 196 cc with all the specified paper work came an advisory notice to change the plug heat range, though it did not specify what to, both mine and his bike have a white thin looking spark rather than a nice blue strong spark,

several people have suggested changing heat range but no one remembers how it works it currently has a nkg equivalent of the original Chinese plug which is a br 8 ea it has been suggested i go to a br 10 but do i look for the EA as i belive this is the thread listing and depth and is this a hoter or colder version of the plug

also in anyone opinion would this make any difference (especially on the 196cc engine) with a cleaner spark should make better combustion if i am correct

any help greatly recived

The larger the number the cooler the plug or if you like the hotter the engine can run without it causing problems.

So if you have hotted up your engine, you probably want a cooler plug.

If it as fitted with a NGK 8 to start with, then pop in a 9. I doubt you need to go as far as 2 grades different.

yeah both engines run hot very hot in fact i think this could be the cause of a few minor problems i have, as these are air cooled machines i may go to the 9 first if then required i will try the 10

do i take it i will just ask for a BR 9 EA instead or will i need a completely different part number and if i do where can i get a reference chart

If you have a BR8EA in there are the mo, then yep, get a BR9EA or BR10EA. If they run 'very hot' it might be worth going for the BR10EA to start with ... going to cold (high number) on a plug won't cause any harm, if you to hot (low number) then the tip of the plug can get extra hot and glow such that it causes pre-ignition ... this ends up in a melted piston!! Wink

Your worst case with a plug that is too cold is that it kacks up and puts itself out ... to be fair, this is more likely to happen/be a problem on a 2-stroke than a 4-stroke ...

hi,
i'd be very interested in reading how you got on,having worked on numerous chinese bikes/engines before, with varying degrees of success.
was it a simple swap over of complete units?
or just top ends?
are you gonna use an open ar filter?
what carb are you using? main jet?
have you changed/modified the exhaust?
although the increase in capacity will only give a slight inrease in top speed, it will certainly give a lot more "useable" power & wont have to use the gearbox as much.
good luck.
cheers,
GAZ
