New graphics card question?

Bought an EVGA 9800GTX+ the other day to replace my aging 6800GS, now the box makes mention of the requirements;

"two 6-pin PCI express power connectors or four available hard disk power connectors."

From what I can see the card only has 1 PCI express power connector (same as the 6800 only had 1) so I duly swapped cards and plugged them in the same, and I cant think why 1 card would need two (graphics cards never even used to need dedicated power connectors). So what the fuck is it on about, or is it assuming you will be using SLI or something?

Also a minor thing, the card may have had a sticker on the plastic case that may have said remove before installation, but in all the huffing and puffing trying to shoehorn the fucker into the case I didnt take it off. Is this a major issue?

They are power hungry cards hence the two connectors to make them run properly, they need a 450W minimum powers supply.

Make sure the sticker isn't covering a cooling vent otherwise it will overheat.

Took it out again (hate those PCI express retainer clips) and peeled the sticker off, it didn't seem to be covering anything, just like a protective sticker for the graphics on the back of the card but its done now.

Double checked the card again and it definately only has one power connector, so no idea what the box is talking about, seems to work well, already played a few games that the 6800 wouldnt entertain for long.

very strange, that looks just like my card, but definately only has 1 connector,

The card came with a two molex into one 6 pin power connector, which I didn't use.

Another thing here https://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=92318 some people are saying you need two connectors, others saying some GTX+'s only require 1.

Bit bloody confusing to say the least.

Some 9800gtx have 2 6pin, some have 1 6pin. Mine has 1, came with an adaptor to use 2 molex.

Most Nvidia cards will either A-Scream if theres no power or B- you will get a pop up when you stress the card in a game saying its lowering the clock speeds due to low power.

Did Nvidia not change the NM size half way through the 9800's life? If you have the smaller manufacturing sized chip it may not need 2 plugs but they used the same package?

I believe the 9800 GTX+ is made using 55nm process, down from 65, or is it 45 down from 55nm something like that. Basically the '+' denoting a different process.

Yep it's as you all have said, smaller manufacturing process, only 1 PCI-e connector. Happy days.
