I dont know a lot about it, but I have heard that Dubai got hit by the credit crunch more than most places. I think its something like the bubble has burst. Probably worth researching it on the net, to see if that is the case.
If that's the case, there might be quite a few people without jobs with experience working there, who are looking for jobs.
I don't know what you would be leaving here. Could you do it so that you went as a holiday, and if you found a job, you could stay ?
A lorry driver I knew through a previous job, sold all his stuff, to go live in Canada, he stayed a short while, didn't like it, and came back.
I guess the better way, would be to not burn your bridges somehow, and not commit yourself until you have been out there. ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |

Marky Mark just came back from Dubai his 24 month contract was ended just like that as his company pretty much went bust and due to not having a job he was told he had to leave pretty sharpish.
Kurt also got offered a job out there and it was rescinded because the company was in severe financial trouble.,
Whatever you do DO NOT rack up debt there as much as possible , bankruptcy is NOT an option debtors are thrown into prisons, you seriously don't want to be in prison in the middle east. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. I grew up there, and although a lot has changed since then it was common practice that you went there TO a job rather than looking for one.
That way visas' etc were sorted in advance by the company and housing was supplied.
As stated there does seem to be a lot of people returning, and some pretty tasty cars simply being abandoned at the airport as people skip out on their debts. I know I wouldn't go there without a job already lined up, most western companies out there are global so often recruit in their home nation. ____________________ Fallen Angel "Nae sniffing my seat now!!!!! No bikes? What you on?
Bikes are common out there, although mainly off road
The laws are surprisingly easy to live with, and most of the examples you give are very very rare, even then only applied to certain racial demographics.
I would move back in an instant, it really is another lifestyle out there ____________________ Fallen Angel "Nae sniffing my seat now!!!!! "

I'm going to echo Kwaker here and say, what ARE you on? Bike's are common place. Massive number of indian and pakistani couriers out there and at night the real bikes come out. Very big biking scene over there and if you do go for it and head out there I'll put you in touch with some of my mates who ride Look up Fast Old Gits (FOGs) they've got a website and probably more suited to your crowd as there's a couple on there with 'Busas, another STUPIDLY quick rider with a 10R as well.
With regards to jobs, I honestly don't know, it depends what kind of work you're looking at doing I guess but as Kwaker says it's probably easiest to line up a job so visa, accomodation etc is all arranged. Failing that, a visit visa lasts a month over there so nothing to stop you going and staying with your girlfriend's brother for a bit whilst you snoop around.
With reference to MarJay's post about temperature and the laws, yes it is starting to warm up a bit now and will only carry on getting hotter untill late August, early September, after that it cools down fairly quickly and I'd say 8 out of 12 months is really nice temperature. Laws, yes things like living with girlfriends etc is frowned upon but the Police aren't going to come adamently looking for you and boot you out. Slight exageration about the prescription drugs though One of my friend's got busted with 0.32 grams of weed in his pocket (left it in there accidentally) on his way through the airport back into Dubai and spent two months in prison and has now been deported. Sucks but I lived my first 20 years of my life without drugs, this country's a bad influence on me
No matter what you read in the newspapers or what anyone has said in this thread, I would honestly say go and dip your toe in the water. It's a different lifestyle over there and I love every second I get to spend there. ____________________ wizzzard wrote: Imagine God just stopping by, tidying your front room up and then quietly letting himself out again. The one about Lemsip is bollocks, I've taken Lemsip back before with no problems. I'd be interested to see your reliable sources of information The media in the United Kingdom at the moment is well known for blowing things out of proportion and making it sound a lot les appealing than it is. Fuck it, post all the stories you want, I like it and I'll always be going back for holidays and I have plans to move back out there, Vee should be able to make his own judgements about it though. ____________________ wizzzard wrote: Imagine God just stopping by, tidying your front room up and then quietly letting himself out again. Censorship here is more subtle.
If the wrong stories get in the news, pressure is brought to bare, so they dont often get in the news, or they appear then disappear quickly.
One example might be after Diana dying, some reporter on teletext, mentioned that she had recently been involved with a 'belt up in the back' campaign advocating seat belt sue.
Within hours, that no longer appeared in the article.
Another one was footage of American soldiers in the aftermath of a massacre of Iraqi civilians. Initially it was aired on the BBC, then it was downplayed, when officials put pressure on the BBC not to show something that wasnt verified independantly. Then eventually, when it could no longer be denies, they admitted it.
Internet is free of that sort of censorship of putting on pressure on an organisation to show or not show certain things.
The national media was telling us that Mr Tomlinson died from a heart attack when he coincidentally happened to be in a similar area to the protesters, and policemen had been subjected to a hail of missiles as they tried to save his life. This was the official line, that they repeated unquestioningly, until videos came to light on the internet and became widely seen, so the truth could no longer be contained. Even afterwards, there was still an attempt to justify the scenes. ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |

In defence of the people in Diana's car, I think the thing of not wearing seatbelts, is a standard, with VIPs and bodyguards, the idea being, that if they are ambushed, they can get out quickly if need be.
As for my views on media bias, its only obvious if you agree with my views, not everyone would.
There have to be controls on the media of what they can and can't say, but often those at the hands of these controls, use the controls to suit their own ends.
No one has an evil plot for world domination and keeping the common man down, they are just doing what they think is right and looking after their interests, and trying to avoid being ticked off by someone with a bit of power.
Its a kind of self-censorship, we see what we allow ourselves to see. We interpret what we see, in light of our experiences and beliefs.
I would agree that our censorship is less formal than somewhere like UAE, but I suspect that the more sophisticated methods we have of controlling public opinion amount to the same thing really. We just dont need a sledgehammer to crack a nut. We are British and so handle things a bit more discretely.
They have censors, we have spin-doctors.
Journalists have to say the right things if they want continued access to politicans. ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |

Will you be there in june?
If we like then there will be a 3 week holiday next year to do some proper research there, looking for jobs/places to live weighing up costs etc. |
Very much doubt I'll be there in June dude, SHOULD be in the RAF by then if everything goes to plan. A three week holiday should give you plenty of time to look round and make your own judgements about the place
Internet is censored out there but just porn really, never had any problems. There are websites to get round it though and I heard if you're in certain areas there aren't any problems.
MarJay, interesting and insightful read, thank you But I'm sticking to my guns on this one, if you can't tolerate the policies of a country you want to live in then you shouldn't live there. I survived just fine out there for 18 years of my life without any kind of contact with drugs and I genuinely think i'm a better person for it. If I'd grown up over, I would of been a monumental fuck up by now ____________________ wizzzard wrote: Imagine God just stopping by, tidying your front room up and then quietly letting himself out again.
