my girlfs parents have finally seen the light and binned Sky in favour of Virgin.

will their sky box continue to work as a freesat box when sky cut them off or do they need to buy a card?

i am sure it'll just continue to work but i've not had sky for nearly 8yrs.

Yes, the card will continue to work as a Freesat from Sky card. It's a perfectly valid thing to do and they allow it.

Bear in mind you'll lose any recording functionality if you have Sky+.

I take it you're one of those who pays Sky lots of money to watch adverts. Yeah, "having a laugh" about says it all. Laughing

Remind us again, is it about five minutes of adverts to every seven minutes of program? At how much cashola per month? Laughing Laughing

Fucking mugs. Laughing Laughing Laughing

I fail to see how Virgin is an improvement.

I doubt it is, but how could it be worse? They both involve mugs paying some cunt to watch adverts, said cunt also being paid shed-loads from the other end to host them. Nice scam. I bet the parasite pieces of filth are laughing themselves silly everytime they get in the Lambo and tootle down to the bank to count their billions.

Pay to watch adverts? Hell will freeze over first.

Ever the ray of sunshine!!! Mr. Green

I'd rather watch Sky adverts than Virgin one.

More and better advert channels!!

Sky is just 100% better than Virgin, if their broadband is anything to go by.

i admit sky is a better tv providor but their packages are poor.

her parents have been with sky since the day it came out, whats that 1990ish?

anyway when i started seeing her their digital box was slow and generally crap, Sky wouldn't entertain there was a problem. I had a spare so i gave it to them and it improved their service no end.

then it started to get slow, again Sky wouldn't help unless they paid.

some 2/3yrs after this i persuaded them to drop Sky sports, that they didn't watch and move to Virgin. (her bro was already paying £37 a month for virgin BB)

so now they pay £56 a month for 20MB bb (soon to be upped to 50 too), 2 TV boxes and a phone line with free calls at all times.

instead of
£37 for the same BB
£40+ for Sky
£16+ for BT.

how is Virgin worse Razz

this excludes to dodgy stuff you can run hehehehe

Virgin is okay, the on demand stuff is excellent.

Virgin's problems are there is no HD Channels apart from BBC HD.

And the boxes are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
sooooooooooooooooo
sooooooooooooo

Slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Going up and down channels is crap on Virgin as is going up and down the TV guide.

That does my head in too. The HD box is slow as hell to change channels. We've noticed that the angle of the remote to the box can help to speed it up. i.e. don't have the box tucked away anywhere, that makes it even worse.

Having had both in the past 12 month, I'd say Virgin is better too.

I had Virgin for about 10 years, phone internet and Tv.

Internet was excellent, I think on 3 occasions it dropped out over those 10 years, and for no longer than a few hours. It was consantly on and my download speeds were consistant and high, on speed test sites I would always get the speed I was subscribed to no matter the time of day.

TV was, well, ok I guess. I had the V+ box and while it was good to be able to record two channels and watch a third, I very rarely done this. But they do have fewer base channels than sky.

Phone, well, it was a phone, we never used it. My mum and mother inlaw would call us on it but thats it! It just came as part of the deal.

Now I've had Sky at a new address for the past 4 months and the broadband is s**t. Max I can get is 'upto' 8 meg (was on 20 with Virgin). When I do actually get anywhere near 8 meg it is an absolute mirracle!!! At the 'peak' times Confused I get less than 1 meg. At other times, I get anything from 4 - 6.

TV is very slightly better than virgin, menu's on the box are quicker, but program guide is rubbish! Plus you do get a few more channels.

Phone again is just a phone, very rarely used!

If and when we move again and Virgin broadband is available, I will get it without hesitation, TV will stay Sky and phone, well, couldn't give a crap who the phone is with, so who ever is cheaper! Laughing

Customer services improved no end with Virgin and they were excellent when I had to cancel.

I'd say they were pretty much on a par at the moment, from my experience.

Thumbs Up

I've had sky for about 3 years never had a problem apart from my little episode with their HD service (which has since been sorted). I use them for phone, t.v and broadband, the bills i find to be reasonable as an indication i pay around £55 per month unless i use box office, and £55 per month aint to bad if you consider that i have the full tv pack.

Also beats paying BT for a phone line. I'd rather give someone a grand a month than give BT a penny a year.

Unfortunatly BT still do get your money, but through Sky.

Sky only lease the sevice from BT.

So you pay Sky, then Sky pay BT.

You will get regular calls from Sky's sales dept wanting to entice you back to them with special offers!

I've now upgraded Sky+ HD service and the box is so much quicker flicking through the channels, and I've added HD channels and they are good.

One thing I do like about virgin, is that you don't need to have a house phone.

Virgin broadband is VASTLY superior to BT's wholesale DSL. I am really annoyed that Virgin still haven't got cabling in my area. I lived in a cabled area a few years back and had NTL cable and it was absolutely awesome. I'm now living in a non-cabled area and I have to put up with this joke of an internet connection. Have you checked out the following to see if you can get their service up to 24Mbit via the BT line, as they maybe in your area;

It's not their service though; it's still via a BT exchange which is where the bottleneck is. Besides, I've checked my exchange and it shows a date for ADSL2+ of 1st October 2009 - 31st March 2010! So in other words they have no idea when they can be arsed to give me a reasonable service.

Oh well...

Actually it's their own equiptment in a BT exchange... Bethere are now owned by 02.
So any bottleneck has nothing to do with BT.
You will also find 02, Sky and some other co's run LLU on exchanges.
Try SamKnows for details of just who does on your exchange.
