My test is at Bolton in the morning, I just wondered if anyone on here has been around Bolton and could tell me anything to watch out for? I have been once before, but it was a while back.
Also, on the test is it ok to use bus lanes?
Many thanks. |
hi mate, did my test in bolton in Feb, passed first time with 2 minors
not much to say really, watch out for the 20mph zones they may take you down, the examiner (tony i think his name was/is) is a really nice guy, he doesn't intimidate you at all. Do everything in your own time, the bike i was on failed to start via ignition the day before!!, luckily it had a kick start so i told him and he laughed and said no problem, so had to kick start it every time i turned the engine off.
the U-turn was down by a school (im not from Bolton so don't know the roads at all, all i know is i had to go across 2 small roundabouts to get to this school....) but was pretty easy. Make sure when you do the E-Stop, once stopped shoulder check right and then left then either paddle your way across to kerb or bang it in first gear and move across. (i didn't do a left shoulder check cos i was rushing and he minored me for it)
oh and bus lanes, he took me on a long straight which had a bus lane, you NEED to go into bus lanes if the time specified on the signs says you can, so keep an estimate of the time you ride, luckily, i was about to go into the bus lane cos the sign said i could but there was a bus stopped at a bus stop further up the road so i i canceled my indicator and stayed in my lane. didn't minor me for it.
also try to stick to speed limit, get to speed limit quickly, when seeing signs for a lower speed limit do your shoulder checks just before coming to the signs.
of course just the usual shoulder checks when moving from a stationary position, life savers just before you make a turn. Keep checking your mirrors often, show you are doing this by over doing your head movements, the more he sees the better!
hope this helps |

Thanks mate great advice
I will keep an eye out for the bus lane signs, my test is at 10:45.
Would it be a minor fault not using the lane or would it be a fail?
Hopefully I will get the same instructor I remember doing my car test a while back and the instructors there were really harsh and a bit intimidating (not@Bolton). I guess it will be a bit easier on a bike because you are on your own so to speak. ____________________ Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Relax, enjoy the ride. If you can, have a little pootle round the area for a few hours beforehand - at least try and get a couple of these in. I had a lesson immediately before my test which worked wonders for calming my nerves by getting me used to being observed and wearing a headset. ____________________ Current Bikes: 1983 Honda VF400FD / 2003 Honda VT750 Shadow

You'll be fine in Bolton, I work there and all the roads are pretty well signposted and lanes marked clearly, and they make sense!
Good luck with the test, I wish I was doing mine already ____________________ Current Bike: Honda CBR 600F
