Finally got one of the engines out my spare zxr.(Thread all in itself)

But unfortuantely as the bike has been stood for a year or two from previous owner water has gotten into the cylinder #3 and rusted some of the liner.

Fvcked or no?
Ideas? replacement sleeve ? (is that possible?)

Kind Regards.

Going from a post near this one, try soaking it in vinegar and brushing it with a soft plastic brush - like one that a woman may use in a sink to clean dishes.

I would do my usual thing of recommending electrolysis, but I'm not sure how would behave with an iron liner pressed into an aluminium alloy barrel.

Thanks.

Is it an Iron liner ? Thought it would be steel.

But then in all intents and purposes... wtf do I know!! This is my first rebuild project. Wink

My main concern is that the rust will have eaten into the liner itself.
Man I'm so pissed with that, already cracked a sump bolt sleeve getting it out so new sump is needed, now this.

More than likely its just on the surface. I'd be more worried that the water had got down into the crank and bearing and rusted in there.

To be honest you'll probably find it all wipes off fairly easily.

Thumbs Up

If it were me, I'd run a honing tool through it and see what it looks like after.

This will necessitate removing the barrel.

If it's too far gone it's a case of either rebore with oversize pistons, new barrels or new liner. New liners can be fitted to most things but it all comes down to a) cost and b) availability.

In reality, you'll probably get a second hand set of barrels for around the £50 mark, maybe even a set of barrels complete with pistons for under £100.

Hi Barry, thanks.

Luckily sump was still oiled up and a quick cautionary glance and it all seems coated quite nicely and nothing rusted. Just this #3 cylinder, water dripped down from the intlet manifold.

Heres hoping it's going to be ok. Will have a proper look tomorrow but just kinda worried at the moment.

Kind regards.

Thanks stinkwheel, for some reason totally missed your post.
Some options there for me to pursue though thanks.

There was a set of barrels and pistons same model zxr a while ago on ebay going very cheap but gone now. Typical.

Update: looked like it might have pitted the liner.
My dads going to run a hone through it and see if it comes up ok.
