Hi all, me again....

Changed the oil and filter on my 750 katana today. Filled it to between the lines on the sightglass then ran the engine for a few mins (didnt fill it right to the top line as last time i did that, when i ran the engine, it appeared overfilled). When i stopped the engine and waited for a while to let it all drain back down, the oil was below the bottom line (in fact couldnt really see any oil). Obviously i immediately topped it up again to between the lines, but i was wondering could i have done any damage for the few mins the bike was running. The oil warning light didnt come on whilst the engine was running so i should be ok, right? Why such a difference between before and after running the engine?

Thanks again

Because oil does more than sit in your sump in that it gets sucked up through the pump and into various bits of the engine where it clings thus lowering your oil level. I tend to put it right to the upper line once it has been run it goes down a bit...

Heh I hate oil changes though in that when you do start the bike the red oil warning light stays on for a second longer than normal as the pump has been drained.

I have no idea if this is related or similar to my bike. But in my Honda SLR650 manual it states that when I change the oil, to firstly fill it with 1L of oil before running the bike for a couple of mins and then add the remainder. This is because the oil tank is slightly seperate from the rest of the engine (inside the frame in fact) and so the oil needs drawing into the engine before the correct amount of oil can be added - otherwise I'm assuming it'd overflow from the frame/tank!

Don't forget you were filling that new oil filter up the first time the engine ran.

I always put in the amount of oil it states for an oil and filter change and I usually have to do a bit of topping up after the engine has had it's first startup.
