so iv got around £2000 to buy a bike.

i would like the power of a 2 stroke and the reliability of a 4 stroke!

would a 4 stroke 125 be faster than my "tuned" tzr 50?

any bikes spring to mind?

let me know, thanks Smile

I dont know if they are in your price range (2nd hand they should be by now) but the r125 is pretty quick for a 4 stroke 125. If i was you i would spend £1500 on a decent rs125 that has been looked after and keep £500 to pay for petrol, oil and servicing.

'Reliability of a 4 stroke' - what, like my Husaberg that had ten hour service intervals, a dodgy cam chain needing replacing and I could never get to start with the road can on when warm?

Or the bad-reliability of my NSR which I did no more servicing than adding more two stroke and replacing the driving chain, yet was my regular commuter for some time? Or my competition-enduro 2 stroke that's going for way longer than the ten hour intervals the husky had without major attention?

I do like the NSR125 as a good combination of reliability and power. There was some one here recently that seemed to have spent massive amounts of money getting a 'claimed' 23.8hp out of his 125 4 stroke (one that weighs as much as a 650 pretty much) - a much lighter NSR in 'ok' condition has that stock.

£2000 for a 125? You must be mad. Spend £800 max on a good 2 stroke 125 and sell it when you get a licence. Then you can drive a real bike. I would not get a 4 stroke, 125s are slow enough already. As for 2 strokes my nsr has always started first time and it has 25,000 miles on the clock. If your after reliability i would not go for the Italian brands however.

it was to stop people saying get a 20 year old 2 stroke, just to keep the options open if say.. some1 bought a new r125 and loved it....

and its not like your losing the money, you get it back when you sell the bike, thats the idea anyway...

i reckon a CG will do a realistic 65mph which i reckon your tzr50 would struggle to make in a reasonable timeframe (<10 seconds!)

So buy a 4 stroke. Thats my opinion anyway Smile

I reckon, now that i hold a full licence, a 125 2t is a toy, i mean theyre very light, very flickable and very fun, more so i'd say than the 600's i've ridden!

The newer and more expensive the bike, the quicker and more you lose.
A £1000 NSR is unlikely to lose value, a £2000 new-4 stroke is very likely to lose value.

Personally, I think the yamaha looks a bit silly, but each to their own.
However, I can guarantee that at some point you will regret not doing your test with that money. I certainly did and most I've spoken to have.

Even if you got a 125 after, it'd mean for the next few years you should have cheaper insurance because you'll have had your licence for longer.

Unless your £2k is really meaningless to you, you will regret spending it on a 125...

As I have previously said in other threads you see people doing this all the time and they regret what they did and want a bigger engined bike.

On the road 125's are SLOW! Some are no match for scooters... spend your money more wisely, buy a REALLY cheap 125 to get your A2 test done on then get something like a CB500..

If you don't do that, the people that do will save their money and leave you frustrated on the road as you see them disappearing off into the distance when you are stuck with your throttle full open not going anywhere!!

Wouldnt waste your time with bikes then if your not planning on anything long term.
For 2K you could have bought a cheap runner and paid for your DAS or A2.

Note: I wonder how many of these guys will be regretting not having taken their test in 10 years time when it will cost 3 times the amount and take a week to complete.

Out of interest, why isn't it an option to do tests?

Otherwise, it seems you've got your heart set on a bike for 'tarty' reasons, so probably best to get that, even if you may enjoy spending your money more in other ways Smile.

My xj600s is quicker than an R125. Please don't buy that bike!

NSR all the way for 2 stroke reliability IMO.

125's aren't all slow. Ofcourse a 125 vs a 600 is no contest but if your just commuting in 60/70 A roads, you won't get overtaken much or at all. When I used to commute on my NSR I can't think of a time when I needed that extra speed, unless I fancied a bit of a hoon.

But to the thread starter, don't waste your money on the yzf - its really overpriced and has little resale value. Get something like a CG or NSR and you know atleast your going to get your money back. Plus if you drop it, the money you will spend to replace the fairings would likely be more than the bikes worth.

Goodluck Thumbs Up

I got a 125 for £1300 when I was 'noob' and at the time I loved it, but after I passed my DAS I regretted it, I bought a CB500 for a couple hundred more and got a damn sight more bike for the money.

I sold my CB500 (black, 2000, 21.5k on the clock, R&Gs, Bagster tank cover, and the only issues were cosmetic rusting) which you can see in my bike pics page, it may be a 500 but it looked good for what it was and I sold in in December for £1200. (insurance was bloody cheap too).

So, £2k to spend? Do your full test, pay for your insurance, get a CB500(insert other equivelent bike) some extras/service etc and have some spare cash !!

You will regret spending out on a 125 like I did !!

There's no excuse for not doing your test, really. I agree with the consensus that for £2000 you could buy a decent workhorse and have a grand left over for lessons and test.

Rob wrote:

I agree, but one thing I don't exactly regret but know I would have been better doing is getting a cheap 125 to learn to ride on. I jumped straight from a 50 to a 500 and while this was a good choice for me, if I'd have had a smaller bike to ride between these two, my riding skills would definitely be better now.

If I was you and had your budget then I would buy second hand RS125 really.. it's not a dead end like 125cc 4 stroke and you still can ride it once you pass your A2 and enjoy it pretty much.

I had similar situation as you, I was in no rush to do the test.. I did my CBT, and bought brand new RS125, after 5 months passed my A2. I'm still enjoying my bike.. derestricted though (with 125 4T you don't have that option) Wink It does the job and is quick enough.

Do I want to sell my RS125 and buy big restricted to 33bhp bike? The answer is no.

But if you plan to do the test asap then do like other people say.. get cheap 125cc 4T for <£1k, spend your savings on DAS (if you are >21) or A2.. then sell the 125 get your money back and buy a big bike you can afford Thumbs Up

Plenty comes down to the rider, and the times when you can safely exploit the extra performance of a larger bike are not really that common.

Watch a track day before a Superteens race meet and you will see RS125s making larger bikes look slow.

All the best
