Nothings definete yet by a very long way but myself and a friend are considering riding around ireland at the end of the summer.

Never really done any touring or anything so im not sure how much to budget, the ferry return will be about £100.

Accomodation wise i have alot of family around the country so costs will be cut there, however i guess the occasional b&b will be neccessary.

What other costs would be needed to take into consideration, i've been thinking £3-400 for 2 weeks but something tells me this is a large underestimation.

Im sure ive left alot of info out so feel free to ask away, but like i say nothing is definete yet.

cheers

Not too sure if I can help you on costs for the trip itself, but reading your post just sparked a few ideas up in my head that might help you out; pre-trip expenses in addition to your ferry booking.

Arrow Bike servicing eg. oil and filter, chain and sprockets, tyres.
Arrow Extra kit that you might need for the trip. Are the clothes and luggage you've got already up to the journey?
Arrow Scottoiler, maybe. I've never tried one, but might be worth looking into if you're going to do more miles than usual.

I reckon you could run up a couple of hundred quid doing just those, but it will be worth it spending time getting prepared this way rather than just poring over a map/Google Earth like I tend to do (although this is essential too Razz).

It has a new c+s, not 2000 miles on them, and oil filter was done withing the last 4000 miles, luggage wise, i have one huge tank bag, plus a decent back pack and a decent bungee net, the bike has plenty of bungee points.
Clothing, i have textiles, they should be suitable for all weathers.

Im willing to skimp a little in aid of keeping the £s down, although id rather loose out on personal comford than anything mechanical. Still the bike is on a good streak (ish) at the moment, so i cant forsee anything major going wrong.

One thing you have reminded me though, i shall be needing a new tyre, or two Confused

Ferry is the biggest cost, can be over £100 for a bike, is a ripoff.

fuel in the republic is 5p a litre cheaper than in the north,aa fuel, the further west you go the bumpier the roads get.it has been known for it to rain so waterproof clothing and can of chain grease essential.bike shops are fewer in number so do all essenial work over here.the ring of kerry is nice if a little touristy, the coaches all go in one direction to avoid problems with passing on the narrow roads.the nicest part of the country is ncoverorth of galway, eating out i found to be expensive.have fun.

Food and drink is pricey over there... The bonus is that the service and quality more than make up for it!

I'm off over to Dublin on Thursday 11th June, late night ferry (9pm-ish arriving half midnight-ish) and coming back on the following monday 8:30ish to 12:30ish. Stena Line booked online £90quid return! (from holyhead).

The countryside is so breathtaking over there, and the people are so friendly... I now it's cliche, but the people are really funny. They have me in fits of laughter everytime I'm there. I've spent a lot of time diving off the west coast and I can thoroughly recommend Galway. Dublin is awesome too, but very very pricey... £6-£8 a pint is not uncommon in the most popular places. £3-£4 a pint is the norm.
