Perhaps you should tell your Dad how you feel?

Then maybe leave the hotel details in an easily findable location so it's up to him what he does with it, then when your brother tells you about it you can honestly say you didn't give your Dad the information!

The responsibility lies with your Dad then!

Cheers Rob, but I live 200 miles away from my dad. Ergo, to leave the details 'lying around' would take just as much effort as to give him the damn thing!
Maybe I will just talk to him about it though.
But I don't want to piss on his fire. If I get him worrying that my Bro might not want him there, then he decides not to go when it turns out my bro would have been stoked to see him, I'll feel like a prize c*nt.

Can't you have a round-a-bout way kind of conversation with your brother about the trip and bring in the wouldn't it be amusing if your dad..blah, blah, blah - and see what his reaction is?

I'm going touring around scotland next month and if my other halfs mum or my dad came and followed us out there on the last part of our trip I wouldn't be happy.
I love them to bits but it's a holiday for me and my boyfriend for us to have fun on our own with our own space as a couple.
There's things you just can't do with parents around no matter what age you are, lewd jokes etc.
They'll see eachother when they get back.

If your Dad is cool have a chat with him and express your reservations

However it could be great, how pleased would you be to be surprised by your Dad?

It is the sort of thing that engenders a memory that lasts a lifetime.

Thumbs Up

First time my Fiancee (as of this week she is no longer the girlfriend!) met my folks we were at a pub. My Dad had a menu in one hand and was nudging her with his elbow pointing out the "pork in cider" and giggling...

Kal, Rob thanks I think you are right. Just gonna chat to him and tell him my fellings. Then it's his call.

Nicky I know what you are saying, but I also imagine that at the end of his trip he'll be tired and skint so having my dad come along means he can live it up for a bit in the Big A at my dad's expense!

Ask your bro how he'd feel if your dad dropped in on a surprise visit. You're not giving away any details and like you said, it's his trip!

Why not ask him how he'd feel about 'people' dropping in on the return leg - doesn't specifically incriminate your dad, should give you an idea and let you know if he has anything special planned for the last bit of the trip!

Because it will put it in his mind.

It's like asking your g/f if she likes puppies a few days before her birthday and then wondering why she isn't surprised that you bought her a dog!

Well yeah but it's better than saying 'how would you feel if dad came to see you on the last bit of your trip' Wink

Not a bad idea, but he would figure it out I think.
This is New York we're talking about, not like popping over to ireland. Of all the people, only my dad would be mad enough to do it.
In fact he'd definitely work it out.

I reckon as long as your brother and his girlfriend get some time in NY on their own ie. your Dad isn't going to get there the same time as them and be with them on the flight home, it'd be ok. Given that your Dad is being really kind rather than a control freak it's a great idea.

New York is just one of the best cities ever and to enjoy it with some cash will be extra special if you've been on a serious budget for a while.

Talk with your Dad about how long he stops with them, but I agree you don't want to spoil it for him either.

I agree with SlimRick. Because if I were him, I really hate this kind of surprise visit. Not everyone welcome this kind of visit. What if he was busy on that day? He'll be confused he can't arrange anything for his dad and blame himself or blame his dad why didn't tell me.

Don't let your dad in on the fact that you know where/when your brother will be in New York, that way he will have to ask your brother himself or get you to do it and that could accidentally give the game away. Wink

I have a feeling though that you are going to say that your dad knows that you know your brothers exact itinery. Confused

I'd give your dad the details...

After being travelling the nicest and best bit was going back to civilisation (in Portugal) and meeting up with my boyfriend's family and having an awesome couple of weeks being looked after, having meals out and generally relaxing.

Plus, like others have said, I'm sure your Dad would make their time in NY fantastic - especially if he gave them enough space and didn't stay in the same hotel or get on the same flight home. Thumbs Up

If I were 18, shagging my way around the world with my girlfriend, I certainly wouldn't want the old man to show up on my doorstep unannounced.

In your position, I'd tell your dad your apprehension, but hand over the contact details on the understanding that as far as your brother is concerned, you had no idea what your dad was planning - you just thought he was going to send a card or something.

Let him get the surprise...if he gets on well with your Dad, it shouldn't be a problem...I personally would have loved to have shared my few days in NY at the end of my travelling.
