I just picked one of these up with 5600 miles on the clock for just under 100 quid.
I've had an mz etz250 before so I know the general style of the bike but I have quite a few questions.
1) It's a 1985 model, I can't find the kickstart (it's dark and raining I just looked as I got it out the car.
2) theres no switch where the lights would normally be on a bike, I don't know what should be there.
3) I presume it's premix, can't find a tank
4) What sort of speed am I looking at, 60?
5) There is no key, I was just going to splice the right wires together and put a switch in the line, but a friend tells me like the mz's the keys are universal?
Cheers

Hah! Fool! I have one in the garden
1/ Theres little difference between the 1985, 1990 or 1960 models. I had the same problem, the kickstart is on the wrong side of the bike pretending to be something else
2/ I'll take a picture of my CZs switch gear for you when I get home tomorrow.
3/ Yes
4/ If you are lucky, but I'd have a look at your tyres and brakes before travelling at such reckless speeds!
5/ Key is indeed unversal - looks like a stereo jack with a spline. ____________________ Kal...

Hi does the kickstart lever come out from the middle of the cover on the rhs?, I can't find it. Theres just the gear lever and the brake lever on each side.

hah, I would feel stupid now, but damn, that never occured to me!
Pyro
Edit premature, wtf, how the hell do you get it to work then?
I would presume you need the key, but thats too complex! It won't kick over, only change down a gear.

I've had one partially stripped in the garden for the past five years - it is pretty low on the project list, and to be honest the thought of riding it scares me, I'll be following your work on this one with interest.
Oh, if there is any coverings on the forks don't remove them under any circumstances - I took off the electrical tape that was wrapped around mine and the forks rusted to an unusable condition in no time. |
I'm not fussed about riding it as a deathtrap, I think of it as 'it'll only do 45 comfortably, so it's not going to hurt as much as a bike that will do 90 comfortably'
I'd like to get the fucking thing started first though.
Turns out theres no battery either, I beleive it's the 6v system.
So how does this kickstart work then? Is there a switch you press to turn it from gear lever to kickstart?

I've not kicked mine into life but I understand you can change the position of the gear lever to do so.
The bad news is that the last CZs came into the country over 10 years ago and some parts are difficult to find and need to be sourced from Germany...
The good news is that owners club is proactive and very useful. |
Yeah, I tried to change the position of the gear lever, just went from 1-4, nothing else.
Strange, I'm sure if stinkwheel catches sight of this thread he will be able to point me in the right direction.

Don't you rotate the gear lever up, from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock, then kick it there?

Thanks shaggy.
Now I've just got to
Find a seller of a key (althought any flat blade screwdriver or indeed object will do it!)
Work out what battery I need
Get it running (turns over, good compression)
Strip down the rear brake - it drags
MOT, and then unleash the powah

1) Press the gear lever in and rotate it upwards like shaggy says.
2) Turn the ignition key for lights. Position 1 = sidelights. Position 2 = headlights.
3) Almost certainly. There ought to be a measurer for oil under the tank cap. One fill = 3l usually. Otherwise run at 40:1 unless someone who sounds convincing telld you different.
4) You wish.
5) Best bet for a key is from an agricultural engineers. You need a key for a Zetor tractor (or a nail).
Any 6v battery. The 6v ones have a dynamo, any old shit will do the trick.
Fit new plugs. Clean the carb. Pray. Only tickle it once. Clean the points

hi great to see someone getting a cz to work ,the bike will do much more than 60 ,if you want to get it shifting you need an jikov carb 26mm 1 from a 175 1 on ebay now,and put k&n filter on ,take barrel off grind out the exhaust port and clean all the edges,2mm off the inlet, take out baffle drill 2 10mm holes init, and your get 100 just about on a good day aslong as your timing is spot on and use a slighlty colder plug and use full synthetic two stroke oil,and yous super unleaded ,your find your like her then it will shift.
ohh and remember the gears are 1 up 3 down opposite too bike these days.
have fun get a haynes tells you everything how to tune it ,if you get timing good your be laughing.
also if the engine is leaking at crank cases strip the engine and ,seal it up with golden hermatite ,and make sure you put back tohether with allen bolts not them crappy flat heads yuk. |

It'll be interesting to see the results, but personally I'd want an independent confirmation it's 125cc, and not a CZ125 with the 175 head. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

It's an RT125 derived 2t single. I'm pretty sure my money is safe.
There is an outside chance he might get it tuned to the extent where it'll pull 80 on the flat. It's not totally outwith the realms of possability but I bet there are only a handful of people in the country with the expertise to do so, and they will have better things to do with their time.
My Jawa (which is essentially two CZ125s joined together) at its peak had lapped in and polished heads with balanced squish bands, no base gasket, a 400cc overbore using cut down and ported +2.5 pistons, balanced crank on German bearings, electronic igntion and was running on 99 octane fuel with fully synthetic premix.
I saw 80mph on it once.
A full on Bantam racer (same basic engine design, much lighter, all extraneous parts removed) will just about hit 100mph with a full dustbin fairing, Japanese engine internals (including crank transplant) and a Wahl-Phillips fuel injector.
The reason I don't trust a video of a GPS is I have seen a mate on a standard 125 bantam doing 80mph through Glencoe... While being pushed by someone on a 650. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

hi no probs you probably seen restricted 1,s ,put it this way not many people know that there is a restriction in the airbox a metal tube tht retricts it alot they put this in so it didnt beat the 250 lol.
also the exhaust take baffles out,and with engine out the piston when you look through the inlet port you can see that the hole on piston isnt big enough by 2mm this also is a restriction, and smooth out the ports as the original is well crap, also if you completely strip the engine and use golden hermatite on crank cases ,put back together with allen head screws you will give it an amazing amout of power ,as from factory the cases leaked and as you know a 2 stroker need to be sealed if its going to work properly,
another good up grade to the bike is a jikov off a 250 twin ,you will have to tune the mixture to get right and also put the needle on number 2,
use these tps you can get 100 mph out a cz easy trust me. |
