My Cagiva Mito Evolution was stolen and recovered a few weeks ago. The little chav b@$tards took a crow bar to the ignition and steering dampner (little retards must have thought it was a steering lock) in order to get to the wiring. as you can imagine this left the bike in a fair bit of a mess although I thought was fixable and decided not to claim on my insurance.

I have now replaced the ignition and steering dampner etc only to find it will not start. At first there was nothing at all from the ignition so I checked some of the fuses etc to find one had blown near the starter relay. this must have blown during an attempt of hot wiring. Replaced this and recharged the battery to which I now hear the starter but the engine wont turn over. I have replaced the spark plug but still no luck. Any ideas? could the engine be seized? are there any checks I can do to check? anyone know of a link showing how to remove and clean the carb?

I phoned Sheldon Motorcycles and the guy that answered was a right cocky grumpy muppet and said the engine may be seized - this is before I could tell him what happened!

I know for sure the bike was not used during the theft as they were unable to remove the two disk locks off the bike. One was a Xena alarm which they killed by putting something through the alarm speaker - I guess a knife or screwdriver. The bike was found hidden behind a bin shed in the next street with various parts of the bike scattered around hidden in bushes etc.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

####update####

I have tested the spark plug to see if there is a spark and I can't see one. I tried the old one and a new irridium one and nothing on either. The original plug is a B9EG and the irridium one is a BR9EIX (recommended by Halfords). I checked the leads and there does not seem to be anything from them either. I gave the rubber plug on the end of the wire a tug and it came straight off revealing what looks like a screw thread. the wire itself looked a bit screwed up inside. I followed this wire along and it dissapears into a sealed block on the right hand side of the bike of which I assume is the ignition coil - I guess this will need replacing?

As the spark plug was out I checked the pressure but this was fine.

basically the ignition was yanked off above the connecting block so all I had to do was connect the replacement ignition to the existing connector block.

hi,
cant see any reason to put a new coil on it.
just cut a couple of inches of HT cable off & replace the plug cap. (there only about 3 quid)
then try for a spark.
you sure the battery is fully charged & connected up?
test the voltage on the battery.
is the starter motor turning? & are the electrics coming on?
cheers,
GAZ

Was it stolen while you're at home? The disc lock alarm was killed before it can go off?

So the starter is spinning the engine, but the engine won't fire up? or You only heard the starter motor go "buzz" and the engine still won't turn at all?

did you ground the spark plug while testing for spark?
It will not spark if you just hold the spark plug with the spark plug cap in the air.

How to check ignition coil working:
(remember turn off ignition switch before messing with ignition coil)
Connect the spark plug wire to ignition coil and one end to the multimeter in voltage setting(dc 500v), it don't matter you connect to the + or - lead of the multimeter , connect the other lead from the multimeter to the battery's minus or frame.

Start the engine, when engine cranking, there should be reading on multimeter. anything other than 0 is a reading.

might they have fucked up your carburettor?

where are you based? MIGHT be able to come have a look if it's near

yep the battery is fully charged and connected up, all lights are very bright and the horn etc is loud etc. I was thinking of getting another coil - seen one on ebay for £16 with the lead and plug.

does the fuel tank sensor have anything to do with the starter? no kill switch or anything? That is the only thing I have not wired back up as the wires were snapped clean out of it. I got a replacement tank but its bloody leaking at the fuel sensor so need something to seal that. The old tank is currently on the bike but this is dented to hell with very nice crowbar impressions in it.

cheers

No the fuel level sensor shouldn't have anything to do with starter

the bike was stolen while i was out. it was outside my mates front door. the house is set back from the road but has a path to walk up to get to it. no one was in but lights were left on to make it look as though there was someone in.

the alarm has a 10 sec delay on it before it activates....it usually makes a chirp noise as a warning. neighbours said they heard nothing! what gets me the most is that the bike was dragged through a block of flats past two front doors and they heard nothing. there was rubber skid marks all along the corridor too. they stood at the back door pulling the bike apart with a crowbar. this is where i found the ignition housing and steering dampner and just outside a few parts in bushes.

i am not 100% how the spark plug was tested, my mate who owns the house where the bike is done it and he has now gone to work. he did mention earthing it but i think he was a little unsure how he to do it. i dont think he used a multimeter though. i will have to ask him when he is on lunch.

it sounds like the starter is spinning the engine but as you said, just not firing up.

not sure about the carb, never messed around with one to know.

the bike is located near the clock garage next to the bromford

try this:

your CDI you have the HT lead with the spark plug attached, one wire attached with a blade connector, and one attached with an eyelet through a screw.

remove the eyelet screw wire, and see if it starts.

if it does, be careful as your killswitch wont work. should get you on the road for the time being till you can sort it properly.

Sounds odd indeed, so they just ripped the ignition switch off? the block that is? hmm, did they take your panels off and dabble with your relays and wires?

Basically I think they broke into the rear of the bike first and took out the Cagiva toolkit. They used the allen key in there to undo the screws around the ignition bracket and popped it off. they put the bracket in the back of the bike which was thoughtful of them but think they had trouble actually pulling out the ignition itself due to the steering lock/ top yoke. this is where they must have used the crowbar to prise it loose. I think they then severed the ignition wiring using a lighter as there are burn marks around the wire sheathing. I guess they saw the steering dampner as some form of threat as this too was prised off, snapping it at its securing points. You can actually see the dents in the fuel tank where it was used.

The panels were still in place but the fuel tank was twisted at the hinges which I think severed the fuel sensor wiring. Maybe they nearly dropped the bike and tried lifting it back up by the tank?? The ignition bracket also holds the tank in place via a thick elastic/ rubber catch and as this was removed the tank would just lift from the bike on its hinges. I think they dropped it on its side as one of the mirror support brackets was partly damaged also.

I do not think they messed with the relays as they all seemed in place and no loose connections. Although one of the two 15 amp fuses was burnt out which sits near the starter relay.

I think they planned to come back for the bike as it was concealed behind a bin shed with a wooden board up the front of it so it could not be seen. luckily, the wind must have blown the board down as it had slid down the front of the bike for me to see it. The next day I looked around the area and found parts scattered about hidden in bushes etc such as my reg plate, steering dampner, parts of the ignition housing, cap from the lock on the fuel tank. They kindly left the Cagiva tool kit in the back of the bike minus spanners and allen keys of course.

I will give this a try in the morning....fingers crossed it starts. Was hoping to be back on the bike for today (13th) as it's my birthday Very Happy

ok gave this a try but still cant get it to start. replaced the leads and plug and still no luck.

I emptied the petrol tank out and noticed that there is something else in the petrol. its a sort of dark orange/ brown colour and it seems heavier than the petrol as it sits at the bottom and moves around like oil - maybe it is but I guess it should not be there. maybe this has found it's way down into the carb...seems like a lot in the tank.

just to clarify, its only the 1 wire you're removing, yes? have you checked for a spark yet? take the sparkplug out and attach it to the HT lead, then see if it sparks when the engine turns over. make sure the end of the plug is touching part of the engine to earth it.

im trying to find a mobile mechanic that will look at bikes

Just a thought - could you have you peed off any lowlifes recently in any way?

From reading your posts they sound either very very incompetant thiefs (i was under the impression bikes were very easily stolen and rode off), or intentionally tried to cause as much damage as possible to it, especially as you still aren't able to start it and are finding they've caused damage to and scattered lots of your components (and possibly took the bike away so as not to be disturbed wrecking it?)

no i tend to keep myself to myself in the area. i think it just annoys low lifes when they see people with something nice.
