Shes a Dnepr MT11 and has a BMW r80/7 motor fitted. The original motor is a similar boxer type motor.

The Dnepr is a contemporary of the Ural. It is made in the Ukraine, near Kiev and is named for a major river in the area.

Urals and Dneprs are similar but not the same, Dneprs if anything have some better design features but have lost out as all the money has gone to the technically inferior Urals.

They are good bikes, but suffer from poor manufacturing standards, rather than poor design, so with a bit of love and care can be made to run very well. Mines had the beemer motor fitted prior to me owning her, but its a similar lump and is easy to maintain with the bonus of a little more poke.

Very nice, I like the look of these old military style side car units, they look very purposeful and have something quite romantic about them I think...

It's a Dnepr. On soviet bike, speed bumps go over you.

Its a 450 watt lucas alternator from some leyland car.......

Has a pulley on the end of a crank and short fanbelt-i was also considering a double pulley and stuffing a supercharger on the other side of the motor Wink

Very very good off road, far better than my mates landrover round the local lanes-he couldnt keep up. Only falls foul of deep soft mud, but can easily be pushed out of harms way where any 4x4 would just be too heavy and need winching.

Ah, the good old "GAG" registration.
Me and another club member, Ron, bought a Dneper each back in 1992. The bike was actually registered on my birthday, which was cool. The reg numbers were - J 736 GAG (mine) and J 737 GAG (Rons)
In fact, they looked like THIS
Mine ended up with a BMW R80 engine, then it got triked. A good friend of mine then bought it in 2001, did the NABD National rally on it, then, a few weeks later, some dozy bint on a mobile phone turned right in front of him . . . it killed both him and the trike. Thumbs Down Evil or Very Mad
Thus ended J 736 GAG

my old man has a couple of urals. One of which he's made his own clutch for. Also has a GS5 front end, proper carbs etc.

Do you have reverse gear on this one? How are the brakes?

F2 sell a higher ratio final drive too.

Clever in as much that the spare wheel will fit any of the 3 wheels on the combo. Also know of an outift around here with a reliant engine in.

I used an early BMW plate - with "castleations" rather than splines. I got a local gear cutting firm ( Village Gears ) to broach me a couple of centres, then fitted the plate to 'em. To be honest, the clutch was always the weak point - fretting would occur on the splines. In the end, I fitted the BMW gearbox, which meant losing the reverse gear, and, sadly losing the swing arm 'cos the output shaft was dead in line with the swing arm spindle. . . . hence the trike was born.

Other technical hitch is that the BMW box spins the shaft the other way so if it did fit youd have 1 forwards and 4 reverse gears.....

Ive used the Dnepr plate-the problem is that as you know the Dnepr runs a two plate clutch so using one plate means that the centre is 1/4" deep instead od 1/2 and that buggers the splines on the input shaft of the gearbox as I foind when I rebuilt the gearbox the last week.

Ive found a Skoda estelle clutch plate that looks likely as is the right shape, and has the required 1/2". Also is a tenner instead of the 40 quid for a beemer one....

Daves a great guy, but knows how to charge Wink I buy me bits from a guy in the Ukraine, far far cheaper.

Almost all Dneprs have reverse, mine included. Ural didnt get a reverse till '99. If you saw a Ural with reverse before 1999, it was fitted with a dnepr gearbox Wink

The clutch problems on mine are due to the mating of a BMW engine to the Dnepr gearbox, you need to jiggle clutch parts around to make it fit properly. As i said above there are afew problems, hopefully the skoda clutch plate will sort it. BMWs, Dneprs and Urals use clutches similar to small car clutches.

Err - no you wouldn't.
If that was the case, you would have five reverse gears. The BMW box ain't got a reverse.
