PostPosted: 21:12 - 18 May 2009    Post subject: Gas - Can somebody help me?? Reply with quote

Hi.

for the winter I had a gas bill of £600odd. We have recently moved in and this was our first winter.

Now I have heard that some companies charge for cubic metres of gas, however our meter says Cubic Feet.

Does anybody know how N Power charge for Gas. I have been on the website and they charge for KwH, which means nothing to me.

Their call centre is closed so I cant ask them directly. Can somebody help??

Thanks

Ash

Thanks Joe,

I cant find a bill anywhere. I had a clearout only yesterday and I think I threw it away.

If I am being charged for Cubic Meters, however my meter reads cubic feet, this means that for each cubic foot I use, N power think im using a cubic meter?

Im getting my hopes up here, but knowing my luck im wrong...

I think it's people with metric that have the problem, as their bills are being mulitplied by 3 where only the meters measured in feet should have the usage mulitplied by 3.

TBH £600 for the winter 6 months would not be too far off the mark for a family house with central heating and hot water running on gas.

Get a copy of your bill and check the start and end readings and that the end reading isn't an estimate, would be my advice.

They charge by neither. The meter records one or the other (4 dial meter records cubic meters and 5 dial meter records cubic feet from memory). To get from that to what they charge there is a calculation including energy contect, etc

First thing to do is to check that the meter reading is correct and not an estimate.

All the best

If it is for 6 months, then that is pretty good. Our last quarter bill was £550. Sad

I heat and cook on gas and my last 1/4 was £200.
Then again I live alone and and am at work a lot. Plus I am a mean old sod who wears wooly jumpers and hats in the house.

Hi

From some old info, the cubic foot number of units is convertered to cubic meters by multiplying by 2.83. This is then multiplied by a correction factor of 1.02264 and then by a calorific value (which was 40.9, should be on your gas bill), then divide by 3.6 to get kWh.

All the best

I always pay quarterly by debit card online. You put in your meter reading each quarter and only pay for what you use.

None of this DD or estimated meter reading stuff, they will just rip you off, hold on to your money so they can make money from it themselves.

Ok, you might save £3 going by DD but if they're charging the same during the summer as they do during the winter, I fail to see how that is fair.

Register to pay online, then rsubmit an actual meter reading and get a new bill.

Thumbs Up

Possibly because they are charging the same in winter when you are using more than you are paying for each month.

If you don't want the estimate then just ring in with a reading.

Npower direct debit discount if you have both gas and electricity is £100 a year I think. Others will be in the same ball park.

All the best

Never realised it was as much as that.

I just resent big utility companies holding onto people's money to invest (or do what ever it is they do with it.)

If they're giving a £100 saving they'll be making that somewhere else, perhaps in tying folk into contracts or holding the 'surplus' paid in a high interest account... (If such a thing exists... Wink )

Hi

Not really, they also have to cover all the losses for people whose bills are underestimated so not really a massive surplus.

The £100 is worth it to them if it means they are getting paid regularly, rather than having to send out red letters, chase people up, process individual payments, etc. Probably also makes it far less likely that people will land up in a load of debt and default, costing them money chasing them through the courts.

All the best

In addition those paying by DD are less likely to jump about chasing cheaper prices, thus are more loyal.

Not sure if this is 'normal' but when I went to the Budget Plan for my electricity (don't have gas) I calculated my usage for the previous 12 months and estimated what I would need to pay each month. When the telephone conversation went as predicted and the amount suggested was £100+ per month I asked them to make it £75 instead as this was more accurate. They agreed without a problem and I just topped up due to the rate increase, so in effect I actually owed them some money! They didn't charge interest and everyone is happy!

I think a lot of these dealings depend on who you talk with on the 'phone, so can be a bit changeable, as some people are definitely more accommodating than others. Some of that may be down to knowledge and training but I suspect much is down to personality and rapport, which can make it a bit of a lottery!

Remember it also works the other way, where people owe them money and don't have to pay interest.....

Hi

With the bod you speak to it probably depends on whether they have got beyond the reading a script stage. Speaking to random people and having to type their details into some dodgy old system which nobody likes is not exactly the pinacle of most people career aspirations.

All the best

Probably.

But why should I pay to cover the utility companies short sightedness...

DD might be easier, but big utility companies have a track record of poor ethics in terms of their customer's money. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could, ummm, throw them?

But you would prefer to pay even more?

Not sure how DD pays for their short sightedness. The problems of the electricity industry being short sighted are at all levels, not just the supplier level you deal with.

All the best

Currently I pay quarterly by debit card, I put in meter readings, a bill is generated and I pay it. I'm only paying for what I use.

If I pay by direct debit, its inflexible. Trying to get a power company to alter the direct debit is hard work. If you over pay (given the power company's track record, I suspect more people over pay than do under pay.) Also, as I understand it, in the small print, you're not able to get any over-payment back until you sever ties with that supplier for what ever reason.

So, I'm not paying to cover other peoples under payments or non-payments (well, I am, but potentially not to the extent I would be if I was using DD.)

Ok, the power company might try to recoup those losses by hiking up the prices, but competition comes into play. Doesn't matter what you do, they're all going to alter prices to cover losses but they're still in competition with each other, its all relative.

In terms of gas usage, I stayed in my last flat for 18 months and our gas bill didn't amount to more than £600 for that entire time period. The direct debit payment suggested to us by scottish power (as I recall) was about £55 per month.

Thumbs Up

But you could pay less for the same useage by paying by direct debit. They all want you to pay by direct debit and they all want to sell you both gas an electric. Minimises their costs and hence a discount to attract you.

Not really on either count.

pa_broon74 wrote:

Can see no reason for that at all (and not can Scottish Power, and if you keep on top of it (easier than remembering to pay the bill) it is unlikely that you will land up having major over payments.

pa_broon74 wrote:

You are, because you are paying more than the reduced rate offered to DD payers. Your increased rate covers the higher chance of non payment or late payment from those who pay on receipt of bill.

pa_broon74 wrote:

True, and they all offer DD discounts, so no real point in moving from one who charges you more to pay on receipt of bill to another that also charges you more to pay on receipt of bill.

Which you could have easily changed. You were still using about £33 a month anyway (and if you had both gas and electric and paid by DD that possibly could have knocked almost £10 a month off your bill).

I can see why people don't want to pay by direct debit and prefer the control of paying on receipt of bill, but I think it a bit strange that you try and justify paying more for your gas an electric as you don't want the perceived extra cost of actually paying less for them.

All the best

Keith

Not having looked at any deals for direct debit payment (and not being arsed to do a point by point rebuttal of your post above.)

I'm sure there's something in what your saying, but I just don't trust the power companies as much as you do. Direct debit amounts are hard to change, its an off'd mentioned complaint about power company business practice.

https://www.utilityweek.co.uk/news/uk/panutility/which-accuses-energy-firms-ove.php (Basically Which? carried out a survey and opver payment accounted for the highest number of complaints.)

https://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2009/mar/27/ofgem-energy-bills-direct-debit-payments (Report from the Guardian about OFGEM telling suppliers to wind their necks in regarding DD increases.)

I pay the same per kilowatt hour as someone paying by direct debit, again, not checking the deals (life is to short) I'd rather put any potential over payment in a savings account (for what its worth) or spend it on stuff I want/need rather than lodge it with a power company so they can do what ever it is they do with it.

I just don't believe the savings are as far reaching as you claim. But please don't spend time checking it out, I take your point, but I just don't trust any business enterprise these days; its all motivated by profit.

Having worked for one who were a bunch of idiots to their staff, I don't trust them. However the biggest problem is that people don't bother to read their meters and just happily have estimated readings until they get really silly (one way or the other). Meters are meant to be read on a regular basis, but with so many houses not having anyone in during the day this just doesn't happen. People who land up hideously in credit through not bothering to give readings want someone to blame for their own failings.

If you are prepared to go to the effort of giving the readings then your dd should be pretty accurate. Likely to be in credit in summer and debt in winter, just to even the payments out.

Certainly never had any issue changing direct debits when I have wanted to.

pa_broon74 wrote:

You might well (although one way direct debit discounts are given is by charging a lower unit rate, but seems to have almost died out as it is less noticeable on the bill, and no a major chunk to remind people), but you are paying a higher bill.

It is all motivated by profit. Profits are higher due to reduced costs with direct debit, hence they are prepared to charge less for DD customers. In the same way as the costs with prepayment meters are far higher there are higher charges to people on token meters and far less interest in bothering to attract them as customers.

npower DO give a £100 per year discount for paying for both gas and electric by direct debit (I have my bill in front of me by the phone having rang them with my reading a couple of days ago, and probably will have to reduce my DD beyond the £39 reduction they have already put in place). While I have no doubt deals vary a bit (and I cannot be bothered to look them up), all the suppliers will give you similar discounts. You can choose to pay more if you wish.

All the best

Keith

I just changed from N Power to southern electric, they sent me a gas bill for £600.00 too which was more then i expected as i was supposed to be paying £31 per month, but they were only taking £18 Confused

so in total my bill would have been £816 which is roughly £400 increase on last year, as my timer is set the same day in day out i can't see gas has gone up that much in 12 months?

i've tried working it out but it's near on impossible so i just paid up.

Weird that they took less. And over a year thay would put you ~£150 in debt.

Get the bills out and check the readings. Is there an estimated reading when you started / ended supply with npower? If the closing reading isn't right then raise a dispute over the change of supplier reading. If all the other readings were estimates and the closing reading is a real one then it looks like you just got an interest free delay in paying your gas bill.

Gas prices have gone up fair dramatically over the last few years though. Quick look at an old bill from June 2000 and it was 1.359755p a kWh with British Gas (including VAT). It is now 3.524p a kWh with them. On top of that they scrapped their standing charge back then that was £7.28 +vat a quarter and merged it in as a higher unit rate for the first so many units. The equivalent now is that for the first 670 kWh per quarter you pay 3.749p extra a unit, so equivalent for a £25.12 standing charger per quarter.

Even only back in 2006 (old bill dated May 2006) the unit rate was 3.440 tier 1 for the first 670 odd kWh (so a 110% increase) and 2.553 tier 2 (38% increase).

All the best

I was paying £62.00 pm split equally between my gas and electric

But apparently as I was in credit with my gas last year so they decided without informing me that they would take £44 for my electric and £18 for my gas.

I’ve just remembered they told me I was £187 in credit with my electric which they put towards my gas bill so adding the £216 I paid plus the £187 plus the balance which is £600 that means my gas was £1003

Shocked i can't believe that i think i'll have to work this out think maybe i've been ripped off Evil or Very Mad
