That's funny Laughing The 12 shirts thing especially. I'l admit on my 7 day europe trip I did take 8 sets of underwear as I had the space and it saved having to wash anything but I packed about 5 shirts and that was more than I needed, and one pair of trousers was enough (I packed 3).

The one thing I would agree on is bog roll, I took one because lots of toilets out there didn't have any paper, or they did have some but it was like A4... you're going to Scotland though so it's daft.

I guess you don't want to be pissed off like this guy did to a toilet when there is no paper to use that I found on the net!

I'm not exactly obsessed with cleanliness, but that is one low I will never stoop to. this makes me cringe.

You should try backpacking around india & S.E Asia for sometime. Where the jug & bucket are the norm at -5* accomodation, along with squat & pig toilets. you`ll soon get the hand of it

Why do you think I'm only going to deepest darkest Scotland? I'm put out if there is no en suite. Eating rough for me is the drive through McDonalds or going to Greggs these days. I have been known to eat chips out of a bag too.

One glaring omission if you're going to Scotland:

Chemical warfare grade midge repellant.

Stinkwheel recommends 100% DEET available from specialist camping/outdoor shops. Don't listen to the sales clerk when they say it's only for rainforest expeditions. I've seen people literally RUNNING from midges in Scotland.

That is not dust on the black jumper, they are all midges.

...and a flame thrower......I've had to run from the scurge of the midge!
As for six days touring I'd take one set of clothes for post riding activity, a spare pair of pants and a spare pair of socks. Too bloody cold in Scotland to wash Laughing

Here's what I took for my one night trip on Monday:

2 t-shirts (wore one, the other in the bag)
2 boxers (same again)
2 pairs of socks (same with these)
1 pair of jeans
2 pair of leather trousers
1 riding jacket
no towel, probably should have took a small one
1 facewash
1 deodorant
1 toothbrush
1 tooth paste
1 sets waterproof over trousers
1 sets of bike gloves, wet/dry
forgot my noise cancelling headphones, should probably have took them
A bag of cable ties, i didn't count how many!
1 roll of gaffa tape
1 ratchet screwdriver with the bits in the handle
1 neckwarmer
1 hat

And not so much needed in your case:
1 tent
1 sleeping bag

My mate brought the rest of the stuff, out of that the stuff I used would not really be applicable to you as you are staying in B&Bs and this was general camping gubbins (torch, stove, pan etc)

Actually, I took one. That was a mistake there. However, I'm really considering getting textiles for my next trip.

A torche? I wonder if I will need one too? perhaps two torches just in case it gets very dark. spare batteries? Bulbs? Matches and candles just in case the torches don't work.

Just get a pack of baby wipes, just so much better, cleaner, fresher, longer lasting, etc etc.

Since you almost bring everything, you should as well bring your bloody table and chair, some vases perhaps? But you wouldn't, because it isn't neccessary, same thing with 12 tshirts, meanwhile you can only wearing ONE for whole trip, but of course, its a bit err.. anti-hygenic, so 6 would be OKAY. Very Happy

(P.S. you guys, I do bring decent amount of tshirts for your info, I'm not that type of person who worn same tshirt for whole week or two. Smile)

To be honest I did think it was a bit....... well a bit dirty wearing the same clothes, but seeing as it appears to be the norm I will have to go with the flow. As with the other stuff i was sending out feelers as to what others would take, although I did take all that last year, and slippers Embarassed ,

Not been travelling on the bike, but always take wet wipes when travelling (backpacking/camping) as they are seriously multi-purpose. Handwipes, face wipes, visor wipes, bottom wipes ( Embarassed ) list is endless!! I use the travel packs as they are smaller and fit into those little inbetweeny places and also they tend to dry out if you don't close them well and if small packet there are less to spoil.

As for T-shirts Rolling Eyes It's not like going into a pub of an evening is gonna leave your clothes wreaking the next day! If I was you I'd be wearing fresh of an evening after a wash and then folding it up neatly and popping it on for riding the next day. You could always think about 'technical sports tops' that are easy to wash and dry over night and use those for under your leathers (mine are Lowe Alpine DryFlo).

Jeez the only thing I have learned from this is people with OCD should not do bike touring.... or should use a back up truck!

As the venerable vet says all you need clothing wise is one on one in the wash and one spare!

Alterrnative is to invest in some hi-tech wicking clothing , and coat them inside in Anti-Bac... dries out really quickly and takes at least three days before any whiffiness is actually noticeable. Do this all the time when pass bashing off road in the Alps where weight is a penalty.

Actually we always travel with one of these from UCO as they do a citronella candle that keeps the midgies and mossies away , and when wild camping put out considerable light.

I'm going on a 2 week run, wild camping, rally camping and with an odd stay in a hostel / B&B.

Packed the following:
Camping stuff
Tent
Sleeping bag
Roll mat
Poncho
chair
machete
head torch

Cooking Stuff
Lighter
fire lighters
stove
fuel
frying pan
kettle
water bottle
Swiss army knife
mug
brew kit
Mess tins

Bike stuff
1/4" socket set
little screwdriver set thingy
allen keys
Plug spanner for GPz
gasket goo
puncture repair kit
cable repair kit
feeler guages
big adjustable spanner
oil for chain/GPz
cable ties
PVC tape
multimeter

Fishing stuff
telescopic spinner
2x fixed spool
small spinner
lures
hooks
weights

Clothing
2x trousers
shorts/swimmers
3x t-shirts
hoodie
Jumper
waterproof gloves
3x socks
3x boxers
deck shoes
hat
cut-off
bandanna
parlour top
oilskins
loud shirt

Miscellaneous
Drinking horn
camera
midge repellant
wet wipes
sunscreen
maps (shetland and scotland)
mobile phone
phone charger
black bags
tea lights
pen
sea sick tablets
sewing kit
Driving licence
tickets

Seems a lot?
It's all packed and ready to go. There is still room in one of the panniers and in the tankbag. The panniers and the tankbag will expand if needed.

A lot of tools? The GF is taking an older bike, I normally wouldn't bother except for the puncture kit. In any case, all the tools fit in the small side pocket of the panniers. No soap etc? I don't really use it much anyway, the wet-wipes will do when camping, shower when we check in to habitation.

I have an idea in planning for a 4 week trip to Faro.
Instead of catching the ferry to Bilbao or Santander and heading south.
I`m thinking of catching the ferry & landing in Europoort holland, heading east to Stuttgart, then south west to Clermont Ferrand, down towards Millau, before heading west through France past Toulouse & Lourdes to Pau, before heading south over the Pyrenees to Jaca, then Pamplona, Salamanca, before finally arriving in Faro for the bike rally.

I have a minor dillemma of which textile to use/pack, as I have a full mesh HG 2 piece suit which is ideal for the heat of Spain, but I also have a more waterproof HG Journey 2 piece suit for the cooler/wetter northern half of the trip. My intial instinct tells me I need to cover myself for both extremes, but I doubt I can carry both

any advice?

Thermals and a one piece rain suit to go over your mesh suit? I say this because I have a Richa jacket which has air vents that are great in the summer, but it's also quite warm in the winter too with the linings in and thermals on underneath. The jacket's linings pack much smaller than another jacket would, allowing me to stow them away when I hit warmer weather mid-trip (especially useful if you begin riding early in the morning).
