just a quicky, 9 times out of 10 my bike starts straight away but then out of the blue it will just crank over with the occasional burble for about 20 seconds before starting, this usually happens when setting off from work in the evening and always starts fine in a morning no matter how cold/damp it is.

the bikes done just over 20.000 miles and as far as i know is still on the origional cam chain tensioner, could this be the bike telling me it wants a new one or could it be something else?

oh and i have just done the valve clearances which were all within tolerances, number 4 ex valve's were a touch on the tight side but still within spec.

Sounds like a normal bike to me...

I would start to worry, when it does not want to start more than when it does.

Could be some muppet is playing with the throttle while you are working and pumping some petrol into the cylinder.

Shouldn't make a difference. With the ignition off there's no power to the injectors.

Only thing that may help could be an oil change, but that's a bit of a long shot. I wouldn't worry too much, my car does it from time to time where it takes longer than normal to catch.

Have you replaced or cleaned the sparkplugs lately or are they still the original from new? 20,000 miles isn't even run in properly let alone past it on one of those.

how many miles should i expect from her then?, i always though they were only good for 40-50,000 before major internals needed replacing

I'd expect at least a 100k if looked after and the oil changed regularly.

got new plugs and air filter about 5 months ago, i just checked them to make sure the gap was still right as i have done around 5000 miles since then.

didnt want to start again today, fine in the morning then a bugger after work, i noticed that if i nip to the shop at dinner on it then its fine at home time and if i dont it's not, but like i say, its always spot on in the mornings Confused

yes, im sure they come with a gap, but somtimes you need to set the gap to suite your bike, to the amount the manual says.

yes i see the logic there, but new plugs are £60, quite a lot of money for an off chance, how often do you get faulty plugs?

yes thats what i thought but they are quite a rare plug apparently(IMR9C9HES), which seems a bit silly in such a common bike Rolling Eyes got quoted 70-80 quid at all the local bike shops, managed to find some on the net for about £50 i think, then add postage your looking at £55.

only 2 results on ebay and both are showing 13-14 quid each lol

If you fit them yourself the £30-50 hourly labour charge wont need paying... its easy to get at plugs when you try. I cant remember how to do them on your bike so i cannot advise on a HOW TO list.
The bike is injected, it should run everytime inless a sensor at any point of the system isnt connected correctly (air box, lambda, temp etc) if anyone of them is out then the bike will not run correctly.

Sounds like they are trying to sell you diamond plugs? If cheap enough, try some plugs it wont do any harm will it really.
