So they've detonated another nuclear bomb, and launched some missiles. The UN has condemned the actions as aggressive with even China & South Korea chipping in.
Are we (the west) to ignore this?
My solution is simple. No need for sanctions, Counter threats. Just air-drop web ready phones and let them surf.

Thing is out of all the countries in the world to have a nuclear capability, the last country you want to have this capability is North Korea, Kim il Jong doesn't care one jot about his own population. I'm sure he wouldn't care about Seoul or Tokyo either.

People i've spoken too don't seem to worry about this as it is on the other-side of the world. This is such a stupid view to have, a nuclear bomb going off anywhere will affect us. Maybe not so physically, though the nuclear winter on the other side of the world would have an impact on our climate, but if Tokyo goes down, then our economy will really go to pot. It would probably also act as a chain reaction and those tentative relations around the world, the US and Russia would again come to a head.

The China issue would also come forward. I think the world should be concerned about this renewed aggression from North Korea.

Looks like the UN will will flex their muscle by hanging around the N. Korean coastline. Times are tense.

We cant just let it be There leaders a fucking psycho as soon as he gets a bomb south koreas days are numbered.

It will all end up in a nuclear crisis which we would be involved in as the yanks are allied to south korea and were allied to the yanks.

if north korea get the bomb japan will want one to for protection remembering that japan are years ahead in technology there bomb could destroy the entire planet. Mr. Green

Whatever happens you can gaurantee it'll be as a result of the usual incompetant and psychotic maneouverings of our 'leaders', and the common man will be the one who bears the brunt of all the suffering.

They have had a nuclear capability for a long time. They haven't used it yet.

They nearly have long range delivery systems too.

The USA in particular would do well to treat North Korea with a lot more respect than they currently do. They seem to forget they did not beat them in a war, they agreed to a cease fire and demilitarised buffer zone between the North and South. North Korea does not resopnd well to the Americans telling them what to do.

If pushed too far, they will count the cease fire and null and void and the tanks will roll out. The US won't dare use their nuclear capability to stop them, North Korea might.

To quote Terry Pratchett: "Never enter an arse-kicking contest with a porcupine.".

Dont know what the fuss is all about, they were hardly cries of panic when Dubya Bush had his finger hovering over the red button for 8 years, and the guys devoid of any trace of intelligence or compassion, and isn't too bothered about raping and pillaging over countries either.

The other countries are just pissy because theres a new country that can now turn around and tell them to go fuck themselves since with their new nuke they can't be bullied anymore.

Personally the mood I'm in today, I couldn't give a rats ass if they started dropping them now, and the retaliation that went with it.

Nah, as part of his economy drive they only gave the missiles half their fuel load.

All the best

Obama keeps banging on about the international laws and how North Korea has broken them. These are the laws set out by America and the west. N.K. are doing what all the other nuclear countries have done or are doing. It is just that the so called super powers are not as super as they thought. The bullies are about to meet their match.
What will happen is every one will start puffing out their chests in all countries, a new peace contract will be drawn up, but this time the big guys will have to take notice of what someone else wants. It will blow over by and large, but if ever a country feels they are not getting what they want on the world stage the N.K. issue will be trawled out.
For N.K. it is more to do with domestic chest beating to their people rather than to us in the west. It is however a good side tracking to the global economy issues for the west.

A "nuclear winter" would need lots and lots of multiple nuclear detonations to throw enought earth into the atmosphere ie from a massive Russia/USA nuclear war, The former soviet union have set off devices up to 52 megatons (anything bigger is too large to have a pratical delvery system) plus multiple devices have been exploded in series before when creating man-made lakes/channels in the former soviet union and there has never had there been a "nuclear winter".

I think you'll find they're set out by the UN.

First Bush gets pilloried for allegedly breaking International Law (that elusive thing that barely exists) but now you say that it's a tool of the western oppressors.

I wish people would make their minds up.

Great, so instead of people make a rational decision on whether it's a good idea for the most bizarre state in the world to be tooled up, they are just thinking "Tee-hee, isn't it funny to see the Yanks upset".

Fickle, short-sighted morons.

Leave aside everyone's irrational hatred of America and the West (and remembering that we live in the West), does anyone actually think it's desirable for NK to have nukes?

*Yawn*

Hey, is it just and so possible that this is a genuine crisis that isn't 'manufactured' by The Evil Conspiracy?

Jeebus, change the record.

The thing is the NK's government probably don't want us or the US having nukes either, and it's not like we don't have a record for busting into countries uninvited.

Moraly why is it right for us to be able to say no to them but them not having any way of saying the same to us.

The reason these sort of countries probably get so pissed in the first place is because people like America say "Do what we say or we'll blow the living shite out of you"

Still dont think i've worded that too well but you get the gist.

Morality is very subjective.

Do you think it is a good idea for North Korea to have nuclear weapons?

Quote:

Every nation in the world has done this at some point - and would do so again given the chance. America suffers because the rest of the world has a severe case of penis envy. When France had armed forces with a decent global reach, they did a lot less moralising and a lot more invading. We Brits didn't build up an empire with tea and sarcastic jibes. The Mughals weren't a particularly peaceful bunch, and the Chinese and Japanese don't have a reputation as warrior cultures for nothing.

It's time people stopped being so hypocritical about the Americans just because they happen to be the current top dog.

Personally, I'm much happier with MY side having nukes than the others.

That might not be fair - but guess what, life isn't fair. Some of these tin-pot third world wanna-be shitholes need to spend a bit more of their national wealth on feeding their people - that's right NK, India and Pakistan, I'm looking at you.

It's not about countries or populations wanting to have big penises, it's about the scum leading them wanting to have them, so they can grandstand their pathetic egos on the world stage.

Something of a rhetorical question.

North Korea IS a nuclear power, has been for some time and there is fuck-all the international community can do about it.

The recent test was just them reminding the rest of the world of this fact. The yeild was estimated in the low kilotonne range which makes it a) Quite an advanced nuke and b) A tactical one which could be used, purely for example, to stop a massive land offensive in its tracks.

In a way not at all unlike some of the Warsaw Pact tank battle scenarios projected in the 1970's where a massive, tank-based Soviet land offensive would be blocked by a line of tactical nukes across East Germany and Poland.

The test of short-range rocket delivery systems the following day is no co-incidence in my book.

Nuclear weapons are here, there is no changing that, to be safe from them, you need to have your own, and more importantly be able to launch them back.

So why are we so surprised?

And why do we have the right to maintain them ourselves, but to tell others that they aren't allowed. Because we are the 'sensible' ones I suppose. Yeah right.

It isn't popular with the west, because we lose our 'power' over them, and no longer get to dictate to them how to behave, its a farce really.

Of course there are some -communists are evil- angles that come in to it as well.

According to mutually assured destruction, the safest situation would be to issue them to all countries, and we have one big stalemate.

Then if they want to roll out the tanks and play soldiers with South Korea let them get on with it.

Actually i think the world would be better if no-one had nukes.

But i think its not unreasonable of me to trust the UK and america with nukes more than north korea (that man is fucked up, who knows what he will do).

And pakistan with nukes is seriously scary shit (taliban are getting pretty close)

Even though the perceived threat would be low if every country had nukes, there will ALWAYS be someone who would like to start a full scale nuclear war. Take a culture who believes in martyrs, if someone were to blow up him or herself as an act of martyrdom, i'm sure they would have no qualms about destroying the rest of the world in the process.

MAD works, but only with sane countries. MAD worked during the Cold War because both the USA and the USSR had a lot at stake, some of these third world countries don't.

Nukes work because no one is gonna fuck with you if you have one.

For a country like Iran, that has been victim of numerous American attempts at interference, getting nukes would be a pretty important self protection.

With North Korea, its one man's ego trip at the expense of his country, who can starve for all he cares.

Issuing every country with nukes, would end up like the way all americans have hand guns, and accidents or anger happens. Also, America couldnt allow all countries being able to have a defense against invasion.

America is powerful enough to dominate countries to get what it wants. If everyone had nukes, that could be more tricky. The reason for banning Iraq having chemical, biological or nuclear weapons was so that is was defenceless against invasion, and its the same with IRAN.

An oil pipeline from the oil states to china would make loads of money, as at the moment it all has to be sent by tanker. Chinas demand is going to keep growing, so there is a lot of money to be made.

Most wars are about control of resources, and are excused by lies about grand abstract ideas, like religion, politics, or whatever.

Its a lot easier to get someone to die for a cause, than die to make a rich man richer.

A ridiculous example of this, is in Pakistan, a kid was talked into being a suicde bomber to settle a family feud. The kid had been told any old bullshit, and the family had paid the bombmaker.

Thats a lot like the way soldiers are told any old shit, to make them willing to 'die for their country'.
