How much is the aprilia rs 125 to tax/mot? my tzr 50 is only £15 a year which is great

What sort of performance would i be getting from a 2008 restricted rs 125? 0 - 60 times, bhp/kw etc..

What are the main problems with these bikes?

If i got one with like 1000 miles on the clock, what could go wrong?

How much do you think they would be roughtly to service?

Do you need a tv licence for a tv in a caravan? Mr. Green

let me know, thanks Thumbs Up Karma

Hi

MOT is the same price, as is a tax disk.

Performance, realistically restricted 80~85mph and a 0-60 time of probably about 10 seconds, maybe a bit slower.

Biggest problem is people not changing the rings and them failing. Rings are cheap (~£35 last time), but it is a good few hours labour (gentle afternoons work) and then they need running in.

With 1k on the clocks you should be OK, but have no idea how the previous owner has treated it.

Service cost will depend on which service and which dealer.

Think the TV licence depends on whether it is plugged into the mains or running from a battery Thinking .

All the best

Keith

Do the 11kw versions come with the powervalve but not "wired up"?

how much are they to tax?

how are they restricted to about 15bhp and not the 33bhp?

Hi

Not sure, but I suspect not. The old 9kW restriction was done by leaving off the power valve, solonoid and fitting a blanking plate. However plenty of grey imports were restricted by just disconnecting the power valve (which probably didn't bring them down to the legal learner limit).

£15 tax a year.

They never made 33hp and never seen Aprilia claiming 33hp for them (they gave up claiming power for 125s before the RS125 came out). Maybe 28~29 for an early one, fair bit less for a later one (smaller carbs and the far worse exhaust to get through the emissions tests).

All the best

Keith

iv heard.......

there restricted about 3 places in the exhaust
the air filter
the cdi to rev restrict them.

i will be getting the fully restricted version, think its worth taking the washers out the exhaust, getting a de-restricted CDI and takin the restrictor out the airbox?

or will it make little differnce and make it unreliable and run bad.

Hi

Don't know with the latest ones, but on the slightly older ones.

With the exhaust the problem is not so much a restriction as just it being bunged up with a cat, etc. Probably best to just buy an Arrow exhaust, or similar.

The cdi restriction is just in the midrange. Basically a deliberate flat spot between 4750 and 6000rpm. Probably there to get the bike through noise tests. There are (or at least were) programmable replacement cdi units.

Not sure on the air filter. Thought it was just the Mito that had a different airbox lid on the restricted version but could be wrong.

Suspect derestricting it will not really make it any less reliable. Still has the same large ports to give the rings a hard time.

All the best

Keith

Hello mate, you considered a different 125 to a RS?

Honda cbr125 would see you through, and I wreckon you'd get alot more for your money.

Plus you'd be pennies in as they are so damn reliable!

If you want economy then Honda CG125 ftw.

If you want performance, then consider a Cagiva Mito as well as an Aprilia.

ive got an 09 restricted aprilia. i got it new but i've already done over 1000 miles. i didn't take it over 6k revs for the first 600 miles, and did the first service (60 quid i think). gets to sixty quite quick, not alot though. i've got mine to 85 mph so far, i think it had a bit left in it as well.

make sure that the person rid it in properely, and let the engine warm up before riding. i always let it heat up to atleast 1 bar on the oil temp before i hop on.

the cbr is really small compared to the rs, and has less power and struggles up hills. the rs is a great bike to ride and absoloutley love mine. makes you feel like a right little biker Laughing

It is a water temperature gauge, and I would say not to bother sitting there waiting for the temp to crawl up. Just ride off but take it really easy until it is fully up to temp (including the sudden drop in temp you might well get when the thermostat first opens).

All the best

But what is the necessity to do "much speed" up a hill anyway?

Oil temperature is pretty irrelevant on a 2 stroke. The engine oil is from a tank and cold. Gearbox oil will take ages to warm up.

Trouble with just leaving it idling is that you are running a rich mixture for longer, washing the oil from things, while also fouling the plug up.

As to hills, plenty of steep hills in NSL zones. Would prefer to still be able to manage 60mph+ up them.

All the best

Ask yourself this question: How is the oil temperature relevant on a two stroke?

helps warm up the gearbox?
makes the oil thinner when its warm so its better on the clutch?

just a few ideas Mr. Green

Ok then, let me ask you this question: How is gearbox oil temperature relevant to things like piston seizure...?

You could have a very hot gearbox but a very cold cylinder. (or vice versa) The long and the short of it is, it will be a water temperature gauge.

oh, just had a look and it is the water temperature. Embarassed
and all of these 'ask yourself the question', i'd have no idea about that kind of stuff.
either way, letting it warm up a bit first can't be a bad thing

Likely to shorten the life of the plug and increase wear, along with wasting petrol for no purpose. Plus point is that it forces then engine to be warmed up a bit before if gets thrashed.

All the best

i still don't thrash it. not till i've been trotting along for quite a while. the petrol thing isn't too much of a bother.

and with the engine wear thing, surely it's only minimal and not half as damaging as hopping on as soon as i start it up

Ok cool so you admit you have no idea. Good. In that case why question what Keith is telling you? He told you it was water temp, and it is water temp.

This is what I don't get about these forums sometimes, and it seems to be especially true with the 16-19 agegroup. People ask for help, then they question what they are being told, and yet they have no knowledge to speak of themselves.

I'm not moaning at you specifically, it just helps if you think before you ask questions...

i'm not questioning whether advice is correct, it's so i actually fully understand the answer.

and i doubted the water temp because it's my own bike and assumed it was the oil. naive of me, but was a little confused when i was told it was something different.
