I'm planning on going for an MOT and my rear tyre is a bit worn. Worn as in very close to the limit blocks in the middle and not much less on the sides.

Is that still passable?

When searching I've only found non specific answers of

'badly worn tyre's are a fail'

What does badly worn come down to also?

IIRC the tread should be no less than 1mm for bikes, Cars it is 1.6mm

If your not sure take it to the MOT place a week before and ask if it would pass. Then you know for sure.

It might be worth simply telling them you're aware it needs changing very soon - better than trying to make out you haven't noticed.

if it's legal it should pass.

as previously said, thats 1mm in a continuous band across at least 3/4s of the tyre.

i'd be more concerned about getting 3 points than an mot if it doesn't meet this.

FWIW the legal requirement for motorcycle tread depth is 1mm across 3/4 of the tyre width and constant visible tread across 100% (a continuous band around the entire circumference).

However, for a moped then there's no minimum tread depth requirement. The tread just has to be visible.

You can check yourself here ([Laws RTA 1988 sect 42 & CUR reg 32]).

If caught on the road penalties are a Fixed Penalty Notice or report for prosecution, maximum £2500 and 3 penalty points. This can be per tyre.

why worry about an MOT fail, if in doubt just buy a new tyre.
the only difference between new & that very worn barely legal tyre your worried about will only matter when when your sliding down the road on your arse when its lost grip, or your pushing the bike home after a puncture or blow out.

If it was me I`d just change the tyre for my own piece of mind.
I change tyres when they`re squared off, and no where near the limit

Not everyone has the disposable money to 'just buy a new tyre'.
Grip is a sliding scale; a decent sports bike tyre low on tread will probably still have a lot more of it than many other bikes do with other tyres.

Compound in contact with road gives you grip. Not tread. Tread clears water in the highly unlikely situation that you hit standing water fast enough to aquaplane.

If you don't believe me, try riding a bike with knobbly road tyres on a wet road. Lots of tread, fuck-all grip.

I ride my motorway tyres almost to canvas.

If it's just off the wear bars, they'll probably give you an advisory to replace the tyre soon.

Yank the back wheel off and see if you can stick a part worn on. Also you can get reasonably good radials cheapish. Contiforce are cheap and quite good-went well on my GSXR 1100 which is similar power to your R6.

But a GSXR1100 is unlikely to handle as quickly as an R6 with a half decent rider on it. Good rubber or no rubber ftw!

When I went for MOT the blokey said it had to be 1.5mm which I knew was bullschlaka.

I still have the tire as personal revenge.

OT get a new tire, you don't really have many other options as if you don't replace it then you will only be buying one in a few weeks.

Thumbs Up
