Hi there

Recently had some clutch issues, long story short ended up with a sheared clutch spring bolt, which is now out but obviously needs replacing

The bolt is a 12.9 high tensile M6x50mm allen head cap type..

.. and as far as I can tell, outside of my clutch doesn't actually exist!

Looked around local places like screwfix to no avail, spoke to ADT Kawasaki in Southampton who were LESS than useless, popped into dealerships etc local to me, and had a poke on the internet.

The only thing I can turn up is M6x50mm in a lower grade of steel (stainless etc), or, 12.9 but with a massive shoulder.

Anyone know of anywhere that can help me out, or that deals in modern Kawasaki spares?

I'm guessing it would be unwise to use stainless or 8.8 in its place? I would imagine the issue of permanent stretch is probably quite prominent given the application!

Fucking me right off how much trouble a single bolt can cause!

Hi

Cradley Heath Kawasaki would probably have them in stock.

All the best

Can't think why they'd be using a 12,9 on a clutch spring, it isn't a high load application really.

How tight are you supposed to do it up according to the manual?

For M6x1.0 bolts you tighten to:

Grade 8,8 = 7.67 ft/lb (dry) or 5.75ft/lb (lubed)
Grade 12,9 = 13 ft/lb (dry) or 9.67 ft/lb (lubed)

So basically. If it's telling you to tighten it to 7ft/lb (84 inch/pounds), you really ought to be using an 8,8 anyway. If it's telling you to tighten to 10ft/lb (120 inch pounds), you need the 12,9.

Haynes says 9Nm! I would have thought with that little torque it wouldn't be biting all that well anyway, given the hardness of the bolt.. But I would have thought that it would constitute a high load application because of the springs, no?

I'm no engineer so I will stand corrected if I'm wrong!

Cheers dudes

Sounds like it's supposed to be the 12,9 then. 9ft/lb on an lubed M6 bolt will stretch it to pretty much 75% of its tensile strength.

The springs ain't all that strong if you think about it, you compress five of them fully using a hand lever every time you change gear.

It's not like it's a wheel spindle pinch bolt or something in terms of load.

Do you know someone with a lathe that could turn a shouldered one down for you? Or cut back a longer one?

When i was missing a bolt that was hard to source i simply went to my local collage and asked the workshop (milling and turning) very nicely to make me one - Later that day i got a call saying it was ready and one of the students did it -

Still working now.

Hope this helps

9Nm is six-point-something ft/lb no? Or will this make no odds?

Good shout on the lathe front, will ask around.

Shit, sorry dude. I never noticed you'd put Nm, I saw that and read 9ft/lb

If it's only supposed to be done up to 6 or7 ft/lb, bung an 8,8 in there. There is actually less chance of it undoing itself because it will be properly stretched at that torque setting.

I can't personally recall seeing a 12,9 bolt on a motorbike anywhere other than on brake calliper anyway.
