Following my misadventures on the ybr, I now have a 2002 er5, 10,000 on the clock, for 1200 - good deal or have I over paid?

My first "big" bike!

Condition is good, however, if you're looking for small scratches, or rust, etc, doesn't take long to find it. Haven't ridden it yet, but I'm not expecting much from it. Really it's just to see me through the next year until my restriction is up. Imagine it will make the ybr seem like a toy though!

It's a bloody nightmare getting it in/out of my garden! Today I have built a ramp!

Here are some pictures
https://img91.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=pict0863r.jpg

This is the engine - does it sound okay?

Regards.

You can always get a bike cheaper but that can be a false economy in the long run. you could have tried for closer to 1k but i wasent there so cant comment, if the bike is in good condition (you will soon find out) i dont think 1200 is too much . Keep on top of oil changes, dont cain it from cold, look after the chain and it should do everything you need, good for 100mph.

I dont know what rubber you are running but Bridgestone BT-45's are an excellent tyre for the 500 class, cheap too Thumbs Up

Speaking as someone who has been off the road for the past month: you have a working bike and i assume are legal, get out there and enjoy it !

oh no it's gold!

I had a gold er5
On being hit by a van and smashing the front fender found out that the gold ones are a limited edition thus the fender cost a bloody fortune to replace

other than that I found it was an excellent bike very reliable had mine 2 years and never had a problem and with 28000 miles on it still got £1200 part exchange for it

My first 'big' bike was an ER5.

I lost count the number of times I dropped it, locked brakes and fell off, or skidded off on ice. But I was able to pick it up and after a quick check, ride off. So pretty indestructible.

Might want to also keep an eye on the rear drum brake. Mine was a bitch to service.

The first things to do are to set the suspension sag correctly (pre-load adjusters on rear shocks and spacers in fork tops) before dropping the yokes 10mm, moving on to Renthals and then Hagon shocks and forks springs....

I sold my 2000 ER5 last year with 35000 miles on it for £900.

So you've done well.

------------

Excellent bike, I was also restricted and had it for 4 years, the restriction is excellent on this bike. Only difference after 2 years, is the top end speed, with the restrictors in it was maximum around 92mp. But it still got there quickly.

Problems, like above , the rear brake, my rear wheel went oval (twice), I had the real bored and in the end I had to get another wheel.

Also plan to change the regulator/rectifier, they go and they can take everything with them. (I had my bulb go, then another straight away, checked it with a multimeter and it was kicking out lots of volts).

Shocked

Anyway....

Is the engine in the ER5 in exactly the same state of tune as the GPZ500S engine?

Would that stop the handle bar wobble I get when I'm riding sometimes? Had a nasty slapper earlier when I let go of the bars Shocked.

I had an ER-5 as first big bike it was mint , dropped it a few times and it survived, was quite good on petrol and really easy to ride. Since changing to CBR miss riding to work on ER-5 twins are brilliant in traffic. Changed to bandit bars which made it a better ride.

I don't think so. I've had both and the GPZ seems a fair bit pokier.

Are you going fairly slow when that happens (30-40ish)? Sounds to me like your head bearings might need tightening up.

Yeah I am, I'll check that out. I would also point out that I have fitted a top box however the box was empty so it shouldn't be making that much of a difference surely? I'm gonna go for a ride later without it just to check.

No. Different cams, CDI and (critically, by all acounts) a carefully designed airbox which won't fit into the ER-5 frame.

The ER5 is 'tuned for torque', which in reality means just like the GPZ at low rpm, but with the top lopped off the power curve.

As a result a 33bhp restriction probably makes little difference.

The ER5 can be pedalled along fairly quickly though and will handle reasonably well if the mods in my earlier post are carried out.

I wouldn't say it would have caused it, but the extra weight may have made it more noticeable. Mine were loose on my XJ and it was much more noticeable with a pillion, you could feel them trying to wobble even with a firm grip on the bars. Riding solo the bars would only start to oscillate if I let go.

(i.e. first 0-15, second 15-30mph, etc etc)

Very good deal - I paid that for a 2001 with 20,000 miles a year ago.

Just warm it up and ride it through the gears and see what speed it does.

you should get about 45 in 1st

I can just touch 40mph in first on my gpz, would probably hit 45 bouncing on the limiter.
Im Good for at least 60 in 2nd, i think more.
I can top the ton in 4th just.
Top end for me is at 120mph ish in 6th gear at ~9,500rpm

My bikes pretty fooked at the moment so it wont max out in top gear.

You can use those for rough figures i guess Laughing

Peak power on the GPZ500 (EX500) engine is 9,800 RPM, so no point going higher. There isn't actually a limiter on those bikes, if you regularly take it to 11,000RPM what you are feeling is the ignition program of the CDI ending. This happens way beyond the safe limit for the engine and should be avoided. Best to treat the redline as 10,000RPM.

Top speed in 6th @9800RPM is indeed 120mph. Fit a 130/80-17 rear tyre and a 17 tooth gearbox sprocket and you'll get 133mph.

On the ER5 (ER500) top speed is around 115mph.

Thats why I only lasted 4 weeks with mine before selling it...

They do serve a purpose though...and there are far worse bikes around, in the same class

For what its worth..£1200 sounds reasonable for the one on this thread..looks in good condition
