I've got an 07 R1 which I absolutely love. I rag it into town every day and only the other morning caught myself grinning as I opened the garage door, thinking how lucky we all are being able to do what we do. Recently however, I've been wanting to change riding style. Nothing's happened (as my missus keeps asking me), I suppose it's just that I'm getting older Confused

So I thought about getting a bike that would wheelie and stoppie easily. I considered Supermotos (I love this Husqvarna), but when I thought about what riding I actually do (17 mile commute: half motorway, half London roads; taking my missus out at the weekends sometimes) I decided the best thing all round would be a streetfighter.

So I decided on a CB1000R. I liked it the best out of the Aprilia Tuono, Kawasaki Z1000, KTM Superduke 990, Triumph Speed/Street Triple, Yamaha FZ1 and Ducati Monster. For me it has the best combination of modern looks and aggressive styling and whilst some of the other bikes rate very highly (the Speed Triple notably) for me it was the best all round fit.

I spent pretty much every night last week on the internet looking into every detail, from which exhaust to put on it (G&G) to what colour to get (Repsol paint job).

Unfortunately, the test ride I did today didn't go well. I was out for and hour and a half and at first I hated it: It just felt really underpowered. I started coming round to it when I realised the best way to get the most out of the engine is to keep it around the 6/7 K rev range, so the power band's available immediately when you want it. I don't want to p1ss of CB owners: it's a great bike. Nothing felt wrong with the handling, I just couldn't help but feel underwhelmed by the Fireblade engine that I have read about being de-tuned for more low-rev torque.

So I got home disappointed, thinking what the hell can I get then?
And then I remembered reading here about the Moto Morini Corsaro Veloce. I know it's expensive but if I sell my R1 and get a loan it'll be £184 a month, £6 less than I'm currently paying on the R1. It also comes with 3 years warranty on parts and labour. (Someone tell me I'm going to need it)

I'm going for a test ride in a couple of weeks and I just know I'm going to end up getting one. Someone talk me out of it! Are there any other bikes I should consider?

You sir, need a B-King. Please buy one, I've yet to see or know of any one actually buying one.

Also, my dad bought a 57 CB1300 the other day after years of gixxer riding, and loves it. Try higher capacity bikes Smile Karma Thumbs Up

Aprilia Tuono...

Simple really , it's the only naked without a detuned engine.

Aprillia really did just take the fairing of a RSV mille.

You could always do the actual 'streetfighter' thing and convert your sports bike. Can probably do it fairly cheaply and keep all the fairings to go back on if/when you sell.

Speed Triple would be my choice, having ridden one, and it can do everything.

The Tuono is also fun, but no as good as a IL4 for town riding.

The CB just seems a bit ZzzzZZzzzZZzzzzZZzz although it probably will do town riding well, may lack the fun factor compared to the above 2.

As above, Street/Speed Triple or B-King.

The triple has a lot of low-down grunt apparently which seems to be what you're after. Thumbs Up

i've an '08 fireblade and one of my friends has a 58 plate cb1000 which i had a shot of last week while out on a run.
i didn't feel much of a drop in power between the two myself.
7/8k while winding it on was more than adequate in the 1000cc department on the road.
are you sure you gave the thing some decent wellie?

A lot depends on how much you wanna spend and how much spanner time you're prepaired to put in,
Anyone can take a gixer and remove the plastic and whack on some straight bars but for a real fighter you really need a bullet proof Yammy lump XS1100 OR VMAX with a chain conversion job and uprated frame and some nice running gear, but hell now we're talking serious money spent....

I went through the exact same decisions when I moved up to my tuono last year mate. I went and did some proper test rides and made my mind up that way. Origionally I was dead set on having a Z1000 as I have always been a Kwak man but after a back to back test ride the Tuono won hands down.

You know you want one Smile

Having ridden both the XJR1300 and ZRX1100 I wouldn't choose either of them.

They are really heavy bikes, especially compared to your R1. (I've not ridden an R1 though, only sat on one and it felt like a 125 compared to my ZZR).

The XJR is almost at the point of no return when setting it down on the centrestand.

I think that a bad stoppie that you could recover on a lighter bike is very likely going to end you up on your arse because of the weight of the bikes.

They are great bikes, don't get me wrong and I'd love to have either. But they wouldn't be my first choice for stoppies etc.

They do tick one box though. Torque-y as fuck.

Put it this way, make a mistake with the throttle while doing a U turn at low revs (I did) is going to make the bike launch forward as the power is right there from the start of the rev range. I don't know how the R1 is so you may already be used to this already.

The speed triple is apparently a good 70lbs lighter and still has lots of power, although I'm not speaking from experience as I have never ridden one.

Notice the word 'apparently'? Quit acting like I know nothing. I had a discussion with someone who stated that his 675 triple has more lower down grunt than a 600.

Thumbs Up

I love my z1000, but have been enjoying it alot more since I put a nitro commander chip in (funds didn't stretch to power commander) and went up 2 teeth on the rear sprocket and put the set of stumpy cans on her.
She wheelies, stoppies and is tourquey all the way up the rev range. Power band used to be around 5k rpm, the chip has lowered this so I have instant reaction on the throttle from the off.

She's so differnt from the standard bike I bought, its something to remember when you're test riding bikes, there's loads can be done at home.

Don't have a lot of experiance, most of the bikes you have mentioned are too heavy for me. Touno was great, loved it, as was the buell xb12, but the z1000 ticked all the boxes for me.

I've never ridden the kwak but I love the JR. Does everything I need it to do & more probably. It is a heavy bike, so while it'll hustle through twisties much better than you'd think, it'll never feel focused like an R1 etc. (I don't and never will stunt) Wheelies would be easy (Some JR owners love wheelies), stoppies would be scary I imagine. They weight a 1/4 of a ton. Laughing

Personally I found revvy bikes more forgiving with throttle/clutch mistakes.

So for what you want, I wouldn't have thought it would be the bike you'd need/want.

Stoppies on bike bikes only cause a problem if they have sucky tyres.
In a very, very small number of cases you can save a stoppy near the limit, but to be that close to the 'limit' and not flying past it you're pretty damn experienced already.
Most of the time, you get scared, let go and find you were actually some way away from the balance point, as the bike does a less-graceful landing.

Cheers everyone, I've got a lot to keep me going there.

I think I'm struck with the Moto Morini because of the looks and unfortunately, the Triumphs and the B-King don't do it for me. The XJR is the same, the guy in my service shop was extolling it's virtues for hours. Maybe one day. When I've got enough time on my hands to clean all those chrome downpipes Wink

I might consider doing some DIY stuff at some point, but I think I'm going to test ride the Moto Morini first, it's supposed to be mental. I've never owned a twin either, especially not one with Temignonis that you can remove the baffles from and remap the ECU so it copes (I've been spending too long on the internet again).

I'm not 100% sure on the looks of the Aprilia Tuono but I think it looks pretty good in black, so I might give that a test ride too.

I was pretty happy with the pick up from 7K but I think I was mislead by what I read about the engine being tuned to give more from low down. That's where I think the Moto Morini will definitely put a big smile on my face.

And as a wise man once said:

"Depends if you see a 'fighter as a tarts bike or an urban-assault vehicle"

Tart signing off. Laughing
