PostPosted: 14:29 - 17 Jun 2009    Post subject: RXS100 vs 4 stroke 125's Reply with quote

About a month ago now I brought a RXS100 mainly for the GF to use over the summer and taking to Uni instead of the 'Four.

I have been impressed with the bike and find it really nippy around town and was under the impression that being a 2 stroke be fairly similar power to a CG125 or similar.

However, I rode it from Bath to Brighton (155 miles) and on the motorway was going 50-55mph. Maybe this was because I had a bag on but I think this is a bit slow. My GF also reckon that the CG125 she did her CBT on had more power than the RXS.

Problem is the GF wants the bike to ride a quite hilly route and am not sure the RXS would be up to it. I didnt buy the bike as for its speed but was quite disappointed with its speed on the motorway (although clearly not designed for this).

Ive started to wonder if a 4 stroke 125 would be better for the use I want, Opinions?

I can't say I know about the RXS specifically but I own a Honda H100 S2 (very similar 2 stroke) and having ridden both can honestly say the CG125 is no match for it. Plus power wheelies on the H100 are made of win. Cool

Owned an oldish (Breg?) un modified RXS100 aeons ago. Would break an indicated 70 on a flat road chin on tank etc. (and tow a seized AR50 20 miles across France))

It should, if working right, kick a CG into touch.

might be worth pulling the barrel off and replacing the rings, they might be worn

Yea took it just now the route that she was take and managed to keep at least 35mph but reckon a rebuild may be required.

I get 55mph on the flat, what do most other people get on their RXS's?

Check that the exhaust isn't clogged - if in doubt give it a good soak in strong caustic soda.

the RXS is a fantastic bike, super comfy seat and really nice nippy engine.

The one i had experience with could easily manage 55 with two large blokes both wearing backpacks. It didnt seem to find lifting the front end a challenge either.

One up it would cruise at 65 with out complaining, or 75ish if you rode it hard

The exhaust was prone to clagging up, always needed a good clean, the oil pump was set to over rich so it always beltched loads of smoke out Wink

I know for sure if i had a spare few hundred in my pocket id go get one in a heart beat Thumbs Up

You reckon the best way is to take it off and put cautic soda in to properly clean it?

Now you mention it when I first got it I took the baffle out and saw inside there was a lot of black stuff in there.

the one i made did an indicated 75 down hill sounding like it would die, but it was lovingly set up perfectly in every possible way engine wise.

65 on the flat was about right.

Hi

From memory stock they did 72mph (and the last one I rode many moons ago would manage to indicate more than that pretty easily). Slightly up on power on a CG and also I suspect lighter.

If yours is ony managing 55 then there is something wrong.

All the best

Keith

Burn all the the crap out of the exhaust on a fire or with a gas torch.

De-coke the piston, head and ports

Replace the rings and hone the bore

(re-fit and Torque it all up properly)

Clean out the carb and jets

Clean the air filter

I had one briefly when I was 17. Would hit 75mph on a good day, with no headwind.

I would have thought that 75 was a bit optimistic for an RS100. Me and a mate had an RS125 each and they wouldnt do more than 78mph. Mine was R reg (1975?) and would wheelie in second off the throttle. Fantastic bikes, great fun, 15 of us all on 125's of simillar performance (no Aprillas or Mitos here), pulling past each other using the grab rails, turning off the ignition and throwing the keys in the gutter and riding off, actually leaning on people round bends, kicking your mates bike in gear at the traffic lights when his clutch is out, six of us went through the same gap in the hedge once.

It was bloody great fun!!

So clearly mine has something wrong with it! Laughing

Surprisingly im quite glad as love the bike and if this is all it has to offer I would be disappointed.

Time to get a Haynes Manual and spend my weekends getting it nice again.

So reckon I should start with the exhaust, then air filter, then carbs and maybe take the top end off and give it a clean?

Hi

Yep, nothing particularly difficult in the engine. Take the baffle out of the exhaust and clean it up. Suspect the air filter is washable foam. Think it is electronic ignition and non adjustable, but a new plug is probably worthwhile (and keep a spare in the tool kit with the bike). Probably worth whipping the head off and decoking it as well (do a compression check first just in case a new piston is on the shopping list).

All the best

Keith
