Not sure where to mention it, here or classifieds.

I have started my own computer repair business based in Sandhurst, Berkshire servicing the surrounding areas after being in the industry for a number of years and getting sick and tired of poor management.

I'm accredited for Microsoft, Cisco and DELL and have years of experience. I cater for residential and small business customers.

This post is basiclly a plug to say, if you know anyone that needs any assistance in computers or networking, please give them my number.

Thank you. Thumbs Up

Good luck with that. I started in 1999 and was pretty much the only chap offering a mobile service. Had more work than I could handle. Now there are around 25 fuckwits who think a three-man pie can feed a crowd, driving prices down to starvation-level and reducing the quality of the service across the board (I do no more freebies or extras of any kind whatsoever).

You will struggle, real hard.

I went on my own doing the same about 18 months ago and have struggled making ends meet recently.

I am now back doing a bit for a firm I used to do a bit of contracting too a few years ago in schools and I'm hoping that picks up enough for me to wind my business up.

Yeah, you're right. I'm struggling at the moment but I'm going to see a free business advisor from the business link and I'm hoping that the advisor will pull something out of her arse. I have had a few friends pass the message around and that's how I have gotten all my work so far.

I do agree that there are too many people doing it but since I can do networking, hopefully I'm a bit different to the normal minority that have completed a 2 week MCDST course. I do believe that I'm charging not enough at £20/hour since most of the guys around here charge £25-30/hour but how else can I get my foot in the door? My plan is to raise the hourly rate in the next 6 months or so depending on how the business goes.

Unfortunately I can't really travel outside of the 3 counties unless it has some major potential since the fuel costs would far out way the benefits.

Put the price up now, to £30/h. It's a simple technique to reassure your potential customers that you're NOT getting a foot in the door, and you do actually know what the hell you're talking about.

In any case, if you build up a client base then push prices up after six months, they'll look elsewhere.

Hourly rate? I've reduced my fee to a flat £30. Fair enough, I'm usually done well within an hour, but as soon as a customer sees an hourly rate they suspect the same old scam of the operative drawing out the work to make the nut.

Most of my work comes from old business clients I acquired in the early days. That and a few old home customers. I'm lucky if new business pays much more than the advertizing most quarters.

The fucking morons who look in the book, see existing businesses already doing the work but advertize anyway, are diseased cunts and need burning out. It takes some special kind of mental sickness to pull that kind of shit. But I suspect they're bigger companies masquerading as small traders and trying to force the real people out of business so they can take over and then raise the prices. Either way, they're scum.

Agree with that.
However, you could put up your rate then give discount for new/regular customers and maybe those that pay within a certain time period.

A bit artificial but like women going sale shopping, it's sometimes not how much you spent but how much you think you've saved.

Best of luck. Thumbs Up

As an aside from small/one man band IT firms having a rough time (the licence to print money expired some years ago). How much Cisco work do you get? I've no interest myself, but I've wondered how many SMBs actually require Cisco support...

Devil's advocate or advice, depending on how you look at it.

Website wrote:

This looks purposely vague; if you hold certifications then state them. There are dozens of certifications available from most IT manufacturers and some of them are utterly worthless and can be achieved, online, in an hour or so with no experience. At the other end of the scale there's the CCIE, of which there are only around 22,000 world wide. Which is it?

I would lose that statement as (to me) it would do more harm than good. If I was having a house built and the builder said he'd been doing it five years I'd fuck him off and look for someone who actually had some experience.

+1.

You're dealing with people who don't know IT and you're giving them a cryptic email address and expecting them to know what you mean. Sure, it might be obvious to the likes of the people who browse this forum, who - by and large - aren't the people you're trying to appeal to.

Is probably because of...

Web site wrote:

From my perspective, 5 years is about how long it takes some people to work their way up from 1st line/Help Desk to 2nd/3rd line (some manage it much sooner, some never do). So a lack of B2B custom isn't that surprising.

I've never run an IT business and, at the moment, I have no desire to. But I can't help thinking there are some real opportunities at the moment with some of the emerging technology to offer SMBs some clever solutions, on both the infrastructure and the desktop front.

Good luck! Thumbs Up

i agree with silver as well..

if you have certifications then list them exactly. their names, their serial numbers.. people feel comforted by seeing such things even if they dont understand them

the email address.. i understand if you want to stave off the webbots but there are better ways. generate the address either via js or some server side script (asp/php/.net) so its is not stored on the website in a complete form.

maybe add a mailto link to it?

or even a simple contact form.

you want to make it as easy as possible for people to get in touch with you

i ran my own web design/computer supply/repair company a few yrs ago. was nice work but a bit too up and down work wise.. chose to become an employee for a few yrs and build up my knowledge and who knows.. i might restart it once i've got a bit more business savvie Smile

good luck to you, its not an easy market.
