Your choice, but it's not something I'd fanyc doing unless you knew what you were doing.

I don't think it would be a good day out if they were to fail mid ride.

I made my own out of mild steel for my old GS500 and they were fine.I just used steel the same thickness of the originals Thumbs Up

(think i painted mine with hammerite smooth to try and stop the rust)

The original ones were just mild steel anyway.

I've gained myself a free shock off, Chriss (cheers mate) and wanting to fit it. Now here is a bit of a problem, my original has a sadle on one end and an eye on the other. the new one, has eyes on both ends, but is the right size and the right price.

Would it be possible to fabricate my own dog bones?

And what would you use?

I'm not sure because-

Mild steel - Easy to use but rusts,
Stainless steel - Harder but more expensive and harder to find,
Aluminium - Very light, but can crack if bent.

Cheers

Make them from mild steel and paint them. Stainless work-hardens when repeatedly flexed and has less tensile strength than steel. Aluminium alloy would work but you need to get the right grade. Cheapest, strongest and least likely to go wrong is steel.

i had the same problem when fitting a ducati 916 shock to my mito 350.

i made 2 brackets from aluminium, ally MIG welded them to the end of the shock, and compression fitted some hardened steel spigots to the new ''saddle'' to stop it wearing out. you could use TIG if you want it to be a bit neater, but a bit of filing will see MIG looking sweet.

Before (not my sofa thank fuck):

after:

i removed the bushing from the eyelet and compression fitted a machined sleeve in there to add a bit more support to the weld, then rammed a 12.8 hardened steel bolt through it and tightened it up to something stupid (over 100nm at a guess). if anything, i think its stronger than stock, and with the advantage of if the weld DOES fail, then the back end will drop about 50mm, but wont cause any fatal damage.
