PostPosted: 15:03 - 26 Jun 2009    Post subject: Virgin TV, Phone and Broadband Packages Reply with quote

Im moving into a new house tomorrow and since this is the last day of working interent I want to get it sorted.

Now virgin seem the best and according to my bro he and I can get money off if I go with them.

The problem is that I download a lot of music, mainly on bittorrent. I dont think I could cope with not being able to download and it seems Virgin are cracking down

Has anyone got this set up and download and if so, do you get away with it? Anyone recommend any other packages? I like tescali but its a £99 start up whereas virgin isnt.

Avoid virgin like the plague then read this thread:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=175756

Their TV is worth getting, even the free view thing they do for free. The get yourself a euro vox and before you know it you'll be breaking all kinds of laws. Thumbs Up

Virgin packages are reasonably priced, if you get 20mb broadband you dont get throttled until after 4.5gb, at which point it will hit 500kb/s for about 4 hours or 12 o clock or something.

This IS annoying, however, I just que up shit loads of stuff and leave it ticking overnight and everythings done by morning (and thats queing up 40gb+ of stuff).

Leave bittorrent to rot in its grave, educate yourself on Newsgroups and Usenet, sign up to an SSL encrypted server, and bobs your mothers brother.

Virgin cable is fine if you schedule your downloads - never been capped yet.

TBH I find bittorrent good for music that isnt availible is many places and not sure other methods would be good, though Ill give it a go.

So people here download and dont get problems with virgin?

been with virgin for years now and no issue at all, most they do is traffic shaping, just dont download during these times.

phone works are well as a BT line
tv, isn't quite as good as sky, better in ways, i.e. can keep watching tv whilst looking at tv guide, but the tv guide is slower
BB, for the money you wont get better, 2mb is being updated to 10 for free so check that out before you commit to 20+, not that you are likely to silly speeds on a bt line unless you live in an exchange (virgin is what it says on the tin, well generally)

v+ is better than sky+ too Razz

As with Bazza I have no problems with downloads. To give an idea of volume I've picked up around 30 Wii games in the last 4 days using those dead things called torrents as I can't be arsed to keep a giganews account alive for the odd spree like this. I easily top 10gig a week even with "normal" stuff though.

For TV it's swings and roundabouts. The TV on demand stuff on Virgin is fantastic, but conversely their HD stuff is rare. Sky has a far better range there but little on demand.

That eurovox thing looks interesting though, would be nice to put a box in the other room Thinking

PM me your email address, I shall send you an invite to join Newzbin, wherein you will find an idiots guide to all things usenet, rather than going into a pretty long winded explanation. It's a bit much to take in at first, but after a short while you don't even have to think about it, it's just a matter of click click click et voila, 20 gigs of the nets finest smut (or music/videos if ur a bit gay like).

Thumbs Up

the 50mb version is unlimited downloads and doesn't have a fair usage policy... which I found quite surprising but that is what they said in the shop (and they phoned some team up to make sure).

£50 a month, or £46 for TV, Phone and broadband.

Considering our house is going to have 8 people in I think I will be going with them.

I'd research that yourself very carefully because I have a friend who’s been in the game much longer than I and he said it was pointless getting it because of the cap. Wouldn’t be surprised if in fact they were on the phone to a dialling tone the whole time and just tried to sell you the package, when you realised you are getting capped you’ll phone up, they’ll say read the small print, you’ll say “But I was told....” they’ll say you signed a contract, it’s up to you to read the small print, mwah ha ha ha ha hahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa etc.

Think about it, it really wouldn;t make sense for them to cap the smaller people yet open the gates up for the one with the biggest drain on the bandwidth, if anything you’d think it would be the other way around.

EDIT: A quick look on their website confirms my suspicions :

See footnote 1.

I had problems with Virgin when i first joined, they were always taking the direct debit early!
Anyway i kicked up a huge fuss so now they give me the largest TV package, 10MB BB and free phone calls for £35 P/M.

Only problem is i download music and films and they have already sent me two letters warning me.
I have some software installed now that masks what im doing and have been downloading for about 3 months without problem.

Im with Virgin and will be getting rid of them.
10mb is ok for me. i download a fair bit of stuff and not been capped.
However because I have 2 boxes, Phone line and BB my bills are near enough £100 with sports ect. But they have a credit limit of £120 - so if the phone gets used alot they tend to cut you off untill you pay 'X' ammount to bring it back under.
Its a pain thats happened alot - and leaves us with nothing for around 8-12 hours at a time.

Ring customer services, have a whine and a moan and they will connect you to the customer relations team who will give you special upgrades!
try it, i did it, Also i told my friends at work and most of them are on cheaper upgraded packages.

+1 to that.

Kick off with them threaten everything and eventually you will get to the Customer Retention Team.

These people can offer you all sorts of things to stop you from 'leaving'

Only works once though.

BTW, if you ever get cut off for whatever reason, they can turn the TV/BB/phone back on immediatley I had mine cut off, phoned up, kicked off, got the customer retention lot and it was put back on while I was on the phone.

Dunno. It's not my bill, and I've lost count of the upgrades I've had. I'd guess 20MB.

Can anyone tell me exactly what to say about my service to get a better package without being actually cut off? Been with Virgin for a year and a half and my bill is £45 a month for 20mb BB and the full TV package, wouldn't mind a cheaper bill!

I had a valid reason when i rang up (always taking money out at the wrong times) but i have been connected to the relations team when i have complained about the price of phone calls, the quality of service or the fact that my box keeps freezing.
Also another good tip with Virgin, Rent a film, ring then up and tell then it wasnt very well described and they will refund you Very Happy

You can lower your bills with Virgin by having paperless billing and paying by DD, but if you already do that I dont know what else you can do.

I'm sure your box must keep freezing or taking ages to come on though Wink
