Well I guess it sure was a popular fictional rally for Mousavi, because I later noticed while browsing the news sites a familiar picture on the BBC's lead iran story- it shows the same crowd, zoomed in to cut out Ahmadinejad. It is clearly the same protest as in the background are the same tree and odd circular building. However, the BBC managed to outdo the LA times in quality reporting- their actual comment under the photo from the huge PRO-Ahmadinejad rally reads 'Supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi again defied a ban on protests'- a blatent lie and deliberately misleading description of what is actually occuring in Iran!
BBC caught using fake picture. Nice. ____________________ NSR125RR - ZXR750H1 - ZX9R E1 - GSF600S - GSF600SK3 - VFR400-NC30 - SV1000N - ST1100-R - CBR900RR-R - GSF1200SK5 - GSF600SK1 - VFR1200FA - GSXR1000K2 - ZZR1400 D8F

The article has been updated to reflect that Auntie Beeb has realised their mistake.
In their defence, their explanation is that it wasn't 'their' picture. ____________________ Space Monkey #7

The BBC are bad at sanitizing and dumbing down the news. Generally, if they just get something wrong, it's usually just that; a mistake.
Probably someone sent the pictures in and the BBC didn't check them for veracity before publishing them.
Arguably, one could say in Iran it would be much easier to photograph an pro-ahmadinnajacket rally than a pro-other-guy rally...
Also, with the amount of voxpop crappy 'public-as-reporters' that goes on, this is bound to happen. There was a great sketch on this on the That Mitchell and Webb Look, Newswipe cover it admirably too.

I can think of times where they have pulled storied due to pressure, which were then proved to be true by other sources.
The BBC is easily bullied into taking an acceptable line.
They may not knowingly lie, but they may knowingly withhold the truth for fear of consequences, and they may focus on one version of the truth giving a misleading picture.
They may also be too willing to accept news fed to them by official sources, in order to fill their equivalent of column inches.
They are the voice of authority, they are government funded. How independant can they be ? At the very least, their views often coincide with those in power.
I personally don't believe that destabilising countries, and then maybe invading them for regime change is a worthy cause, if hundreds of thousands of people die in the process.
They may be looking at long term strategic goals, but I'm not aware of their plans and how they can justify things to themselves.
Telling people that their government is bad and life would be better if they were more like us, isn't always a good thing. ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |

Journalism has become lazy, especially recently. However, the BBC (and others) at the time were also reporting that the Weapons Inspectors weren't finished their work, (in terms of WMD.)
On the yellow cake, again, they're journalists so probably fey. On the topic of the Iraq war, there are aspects of it that could be investigated indefinitely, I suspect some people would never be content.
You're memory seems to be selective in favour of your opinion on the topic. The BBC might be guilty of poor quality control, but not of out and out fibbing. (Unless it's a television contest, in which case, I'll give you that.)

Whoa there. Oh yes you can, particularly when they report them as fact. Yellowcake from Niger? Saddams WMD? |
They reported that as fact? Sources? I looked, I found this:
| Quote: | The 45 minute claim lies at the centre of a row between Downing Street and the BBC. On 29 May 2003, BBC defence correspondent Andrew Gilligan filed a report for BBC Radio 4's Today programme in which he stated that an unnamed source - a senior British official - had told him that the September Dossier had been "sexed up", and that the intelligence agencies were concerned about some "dubious" information contained within it - specifically the claim that Saddam Hussein could deploy weapons of mass destruction within 45 minutes of an order to use them.
On 1 June, Gilligan expanded upon that claim in the Mail on Sunday newspaper, stating that the government's director of communications, Alastair Campbell, had been responsible for the insertion of the 45 minute claim, against the wishes of the intelligence agencies. Gilligan subsequently gave evidence before the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, as did Campbell, who denied ordering the inclusion of the claim, and demanded an apology from the BBC. He subsequently backed this demand in writing.
The BBC refused to apologise, and stood by Gilligan's story. Campbell responded angrily, with an appearance on Channel 4 News. [9]

That seems like the exact opposite of the behaviour you're describing. So again - sources?
My view on the original post is that all organisations, certainly ones as huge as the beeb, are bound to get things wrong from time to time. By all means get pissed off when it happens, but it's not proof that they're the govmt propaganda arm, not even close. ____________________ Photos and that |

'Here's a different view from Media Lens. It's an independent "UK-based media-watch project....offer(ing) authoritative criticism" reflecting "reality" that's free from the corrupting influence of media corporations and the governments they support.
Its creators and editors (Davids Cromwell and Edwards) ask: "Can the BBC tell the truth....when its senior managers are appointed by the government" and will be fired if they step out of line and become too critical. It notes that nothing "fundamentally changed since BBC founder Lord Reith wrote the establishment: 'They know they can trust us not to be really impartial.' " He didn't disappoint, nor have his successors like current Director-General and Chairman of the Executive Board Mark Thompson along with Michael Lyons, Chairman, BBC Trust that replaced the Board of Governors on January 1, 2007 and oversees BBC operations.
On January 1, 1927, BBC was granted a Royal Charter, made a state-owned and funded corporation, still pretends to be quasi-autonomous, and changed its name to its present one - The British Broadcasting Corporation. Its first Charter ran for 10 years, succeeding ones were renewed for equal fixed length periods, BBC is in its ninth Charter period, and is perhaps more dominant, pervasive and corrupted than ever in an age of marketplace everything and space-age technology with which to operate.'
or
'In fact, BBC abandoned those notions straight away, and a glaring example came during the 1926 General Strike. Its web site says it stood up against Chancellor of the Exchequer Winston Churchill who "urged the government to take over the BBC, but (general manager) Reith persuaded Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin that this would be against the national interest" it was sworn to serve.
Media Lens forthrightly corrects the record. Reith never embraced the public trust. He used BBC for propaganda, operated it as a strikebreaker, secretly wrote anti-union speeches for the Tories, and refused to give air time to worker representatives. It got BBC labeled the "British Falsehood Corporation," and proved from inception it was a reliable business and government partner. It still is, of course, more than ever.
Consider BBC's role during WW II when it became a de facto government agency, and throughout its existence job applicants have been vetted to be sure what side they're on. Noted UK journalist John Pilger explains that independent-minded ones "were refused BBC posts (and still are) because they were not considered safe."

I could link examples all day long, for instance when Georgia struck Russia on 8/8/08 and the beeb claimed Russia were the antagonists. The list is endless, so you wonder why when caught using faked pictures to swell support for regime change we get suspicious? ____________________ NSR125RR - ZXR750H1 - ZX9R E1 - GSF600S - GSF600SK3 - VFR400-NC30 - SV1000N - ST1100-R - CBR900RR-R - GSF1200SK5 - GSF600SK1 - VFR1200FA - GSXR1000K2 - ZZR1400 D8F

You're right, something that happened in 1943, in the middle of a global war, definitively proves that in 2009 the BBC are responsible for government propaganda output.
And I'd still love a source on that WMD thing. ____________________ Photos and that |

I'll see your medialens article and raise you https://observer.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,1800328,00.html.
We could on forever posting link from either end of the spectrum from internet sites...
The fact is, the BBC just wouldn't get away with being a propaganda machine for the government, as I said, if they're guilty of anything, it's dumming things down and sometimes that works in the governments favour, at best, this is all you could reasonably claim.
There are watchdogs (of limited use,) but more importantly there's the rest of the press, us and the internet. ALl of that keeping BBC on it's toes, and it works, as evidenced by the existence of this thread.

Are you suggesting that the global climate is similar now to the global climate in 1943? And that because an organisation did something over 60 years ago they are unquestionably doing it today? That, like many of your arguments, doesn't add up.
Opinion pieces do not a solid argument make. Lets have some evidence. ____________________ Photos and that |
