https://whatreallyhappened.com/WRHARTICLES/iranprop.php?q=WRHARTICLES/iranprop.phpare

Well I guess it sure was a popular fictional rally for Mousavi, because I later noticed while browsing the news sites a familiar picture on the BBC's lead iran story- it shows the same crowd, zoomed in to cut out Ahmadinejad. It is clearly the same protest as in the background are the same tree and odd circular building. However, the BBC managed to outdo the LA times in quality reporting- their actual comment under the photo from the huge PRO-Ahmadinejad rally reads 'Supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi again defied a ban on protests'- a blatent lie and deliberately misleading description of what is actually occuring in Iran!

BBC caught using fake picture. Nice.

The article has been updated to reflect that Auntie Beeb has realised their mistake.
In their defence, their explanation is that it wasn't 'their' picture.

Anyway, wouldn't be the first time the Beeb had lied to it's 'darling' viewers, would it! Laughing

The BBC are bad at sanitizing and dumbing down the news. Generally, if they just get something wrong, it's usually just that; a mistake.

Probably someone sent the pictures in and the BBC didn't check them for veracity before publishing them.

Arguably, one could say in Iran it would be much easier to photograph an pro-ahmadinnajacket rally than a pro-other-guy rally...

Also, with the amount of voxpop crappy 'public-as-reporters' that goes on, this is bound to happen. There was a great sketch on this on the That Mitchell and Webb Look, Newswipe cover it admirably too.

I'm wondering if our governments have stoked the fires for change, to provoke the Iranian government into heavy handedly controlling their populace, so we can justify invading Iran.

I reckon you're on the right track there.

If you remember we overthrew their democratically elected leaders in the 50's and replaced them with stooges - similar to what we did in Iraq with Saddam.

Some examples of where they've out and out lied, it's easy to mark down a post with out qualifying why...

I wouldn't defend the BBC as such, but I will defend my opinions. The BBC could be accused of catering to the lowest common denominator (newscasts on radio one as an example.) But when have they actually lied on the news?

You can't include reports on comments made by individuals that have later been disproven, they're reporters not oracles.

I can think of times where they have pulled storied due to pressure, which were then proved to be true by other sources.

The BBC is easily bullied into taking an acceptable line.

They may not knowingly lie, but they may knowingly withhold the truth for fear of consequences, and they may focus on one version of the truth giving a misleading picture.

They may also be too willing to accept news fed to them by official sources, in order to fill their equivalent of column inches.

They are the voice of authority, they are government funded. How independant can they be ? At the very least, their views often coincide with those in power.

I personally don't believe that destabilising countries, and then maybe invading them for regime change is a worthy cause, if hundreds of thousands of people die in the process.

They may be looking at long term strategic goals, but I'm not aware of their plans and how they can justify things to themselves.

Telling people that their government is bad and life would be better if they were more like us, isn't always a good thing.

Whoa there. Oh yes you can, particularly when they report them as fact. Yellowcake from Niger? Saddams WMD?

They aren't reporters. They are regurgitaters, nothing more than paid suits well versed in the art of reading gov'ment press releases. If they actually did some investigative journalism then they wouldn't report the news in the first place. Thumbs Up

Anyway, the beeb is the propaganda arm for the 'authorities' just as it was in the days when G. Orwell worked there...

Journalism has become lazy, especially recently. However, the BBC (and others) at the time were also reporting that the Weapons Inspectors weren't finished their work, (in terms of WMD.)

On the yellow cake, again, they're journalists so probably fey. On the topic of the Iraq war, there are aspects of it that could be investigated indefinitely, I suspect some people would never be content.

You're memory seems to be selective in favour of your opinion on the topic. The BBC might be guilty of poor quality control, but not of out and out fibbing. (Unless it's a television contest, in which case, I'll give you that.)

They reported that as fact? Sources? I looked, I found this:

Quote:
The 45 minute claim lies at the centre of a row between Downing Street and the BBC. On 29 May 2003, BBC defence correspondent Andrew Gilligan filed a report for BBC Radio 4's Today programme in which he stated that an unnamed source - a senior British official - had told him that the September Dossier had been "sexed up", and that the intelligence agencies were concerned about some "dubious" information contained within it - specifically the claim that Saddam Hussein could deploy weapons of mass destruction within 45 minutes of an order to use them.

On 1 June, Gilligan expanded upon that claim in the Mail on Sunday newspaper, stating that the government's director of communications, Alastair Campbell, had been responsible for the insertion of the 45 minute claim, against the wishes of the intelligence agencies. Gilligan subsequently gave evidence before the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, as did Campbell, who denied ordering the inclusion of the claim, and demanded an apology from the BBC. He subsequently backed this demand in writing.

The BBC refused to apologise, and stood by Gilligan's story. Campbell responded angrily, with an appearance on Channel 4 News. [9]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_Dossier

That seems like the exact opposite of the behaviour you're describing. So again - sources?

My view on the original post is that all organisations, certainly ones as huge as the beeb, are bound to get things wrong from time to time. By all means get pissed off when it happens, but it's not proof that they're the govmt propaganda arm, not even close.

'Here's a different view from Media Lens. It's an independent "UK-based media-watch project....offer(ing) authoritative criticism" reflecting "reality" that's free from the corrupting influence of media corporations and the governments they support.

Its creators and editors (Davids Cromwell and Edwards) ask: "Can the BBC tell the truth....when its senior managers are appointed by the government" and will be fired if they step out of line and become too critical. It notes that nothing "fundamentally changed since BBC founder Lord Reith wrote the establishment: 'They know they can trust us not to be really impartial.' " He didn't disappoint, nor have his successors like current Director-General and Chairman of the Executive Board Mark Thompson along with Michael Lyons, Chairman, BBC Trust that replaced the Board of Governors on January 1, 2007 and oversees BBC operations.

On January 1, 1927, BBC was granted a Royal Charter, made a state-owned and funded corporation, still pretends to be quasi-autonomous, and changed its name to its present one - The British Broadcasting Corporation. Its first Charter ran for 10 years, succeeding ones were renewed for equal fixed length periods, BBC is in its ninth Charter period, and is perhaps more dominant, pervasive and corrupted than ever in an age of marketplace everything and space-age technology with which to operate.'

or

'In fact, BBC abandoned those notions straight away, and a glaring example came during the 1926 General Strike. Its web site says it stood up against Chancellor of the Exchequer Winston Churchill who "urged the government to take over the BBC, but (general manager) Reith persuaded Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin that this would be against the national interest" it was sworn to serve.

Media Lens forthrightly corrects the record. Reith never embraced the public trust. He used BBC for propaganda, operated it as a strikebreaker, secretly wrote anti-union speeches for the Tories, and refused to give air time to worker representatives. It got BBC labeled the "British Falsehood Corporation," and proved from inception it was a reliable business and government partner. It still is, of course, more than ever.

Consider BBC's role during WW II when it became a de facto government agency, and throughout its existence job applicants have been vetted to be sure what side they're on. Noted UK journalist John Pilger explains that independent-minded ones "were refused BBC posts (and still are) because they were not considered safe."

Link to article

I could link examples all day long, for instance when Georgia struck Russia on 8/8/08 and the beeb claimed Russia were the antagonists. The list is endless, so you wonder why when caught using faked pictures to swell support for regime change we get suspicious?

I meant sources for your claim that the BBC had made statements of fact regarding Iraqi WMDs. I'd still be interested in seeing some.

I did have a look at Media Lens though, it's quite an interesting site and makes some very valid points. They do also say this:

Quote:
Are you saying that the mainstream media is some kind of a giant conspiracy to keep the public ignorant?
No. In seeking to understand the basis and operation of systematic mass media distortion, we flatly reject all conspiracy theories. Instead, we point to the inevitably corrupting effects of ‘market forces’ operating on, and through, media corporations seeking profit in a society dominated by corporate power.

The argument is a valid one, but it does not appear to be in line with your 'propaganda arm' line. I would suggest that anyone with a reasonable degree of intelligence would be aware of the fact that no source can ever truly be without bias, but that evidence for some kind of calculated conspiracy is sorely lacking.

Rolling Eyes

Between 1941 and 1943, Orwell worked on propaganda for the BBC.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/orwell_george.shtml

From the beebs own website. What do you think 1984 is about? Orwell saw the lies and manipulation of the beeb for himself.

You're right, something that happened in 1943, in the middle of a global war, definitively proves that in 2009 the BBC are responsible for government propaganda output.

And I'd still love a source on that WMD thing. Razz

Ah so you agree they have been used as a propaganda arm then?

Laughing

Keep checking on here, I'll find some beeb disinfo about the WMD soon enough. Meanwhile, you go back to that original article I linked to and read it properly. Wink

Not only do I 'agree' (it's one of those genuine 'fact' things that crop up so rarely in these discussions) but I have no problem with it whatsoever. If you want to get wound up about things that occurred in the midst of WW2 there are far better targets. To say it's significant evidence that the bbc are currently a govmt propaganda arm is nonsense.

As for the article you originally linked to, I know better than to give credence to any site as laughable as that. Check out the homepage for christ's sake. A few tweaks and it'd be perfect for a fundamentalist religious sect. 'New Earth Solutions', 'Break free from the Matrix'. Good stuff. Nice and ballsy disclaimer they've got, too:

Quote:
Disclaimer - The posting of stories, commentaries, reports, documents and links (embedded or otherwise) on this site does not in any way, shape or form, implied or otherwise, necessarily express or suggest endorsement or support of any of such posted material or parts therein.

Even they haven't got the guts to commit to what they're saying.

I'll see your medialens article and raise you https://observer.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,1800328,00.html.

We could on forever posting link from either end of the spectrum from internet sites...

The fact is, the BBC just wouldn't get away with being a propaganda machine for the government, as I said, if they're guilty of anything, it's dumming things down and sometimes that works in the governments favour, at best, this is all you could reasonably claim.

There are watchdogs (of limited use,) but more importantly there's the rest of the press, us and the internet. ALl of that keeping BBC on it's toes, and it works, as evidenced by the existence of this thread.

Thumbs Up

Are you suggesting that the global climate is similar now to the global climate in 1943? And that because an organisation did something over 60 years ago they are unquestionably doing it today? That, like many of your arguments, doesn't add up.

Opinion pieces do not a solid argument make. Lets have some evidence.

I think elements of the media who's agenda doesn't gel with that of BBC would always point out any errors they make, with a fair amount of glee too.

It's a bit like competition but the profit is represented as bums on seats/papers in hands/websites visited... I was going to say it has nothing to do with money but actually it does, more bums on seats, more people to see adverts you carry...

atleast the BBC can't be accussed of that.

Thumbs Up
