I'm beginning to get a little bored with the sound of my puny 125 and would like to replace it with some lovely music that I can sing along to as Im riding to and from work.

Does anyone else do this or is it a dangerous thing to do?

If you do, do it then what are the best earphones to use in conjunction with a helmet?

I see it as no more dangerous than listening to loud music in a car. Choose your level.
I use sennheiser cxl 300s Thumbs Up Quality comfort and reasonable

i use sony in ear buds but the only problem is if you have them too loud it is hard to hear police sirens

so i got a bluetooth helmet witch is good but over 50 all you can hear is rrrrrrrrrrrrr Rolling Eyes

the helmet connects to my phone so i can make calls and its really clear

I just sing to myself Wink

I think it's dangerous, to be honest. You might have to have the volume so high for when you're at speed that it'll drown everything else out when you're slow or stopped. Plus that'll damage your ears without you realizing it.

Buy a better can, that can be the soundtrack to your adventures!

ive got a garmin zumo sat nav that can play music and stuff...

I use sony in ear earphones with a balaclava and its fine. its easier with a zumo though because i can adjust the volume at the touch of a button. you can also get a headset so you can make phone calls too but thats pointless for me.

If you were going to use an ipod, itd be abit harder to adjust volume, maybe even dangerous Laughing
but i think if you set the volume right and then leave it alone while riding you'll be fine.

people ride around in cars that blare music out really loud, singing and nodding their head at the same time, as long as you dont do that youll be fine. Laughing

Loud music out of speakers around you and loud music out of speakers directly against your ear and designed to play that music into your ear while keeping other noises out... are slightly different things Wink

Aren't you meant to wear ear plugs anyway. Not much difference to that and listening to music, can't hear what's going on around you either way.

I don't do either though, like to hear what's going on around me.

yeah your right. the point im trying to get across is dont turn the music up too loud really, i have my music loud enough to hear but not loud enough to drown out the noise of horns etc.
if you had it that loud it would damage your ears.

if you have it at the right volume then its not a problem. Very Happy

Autocom adjusts the volume based on the background noise, so it'll automatically be quieter in towns where you're going slower and louder on the motorway where you're going quickly. And cos it uses speakers rather than in-ear phones you can still hear background noise.

What you're listening to also has an effect, in my experience. Tis good to playlist accordingly.

I did on my NSR, but now I have the Hornet I'm giving it a rest so I can get used to the normal engine noise and add to the fact that I'm on a more powerful bike and thus need to concentrate more. Eventually I'll start listening to it whilst riding again. When I did before, I had it loud enough to block out horns, sirens etc (because thats the way heavy metal should be played.... Twisted Evil ) but keeping my rear observation in check meant that any police/ambulances were seen in good time for me to get the hell out the way.

my advice is to wear a balaclava under your helmet - keeps the earphones in the ear (get proper in ear ones) and reduces wind noise. (and stops your helmet getting covered in sweat as a bonus) - get a silk one if it's really hot.

Just make sure you set the volume to comfortable before you fire up the bike and get going- I've done 90 on the motorway and still heard the music fine and thats in my windy Arai.

Plus I think it makes you a bit safer to listen to music - you're less likely to get bored on the same old commute and try to rag it. (Just dont listen to the new AC/DC album that makes you ride like a lunatic! \nn/

I can't...I find it too distracting...and certain music makes me drive/ride faster...but that's just me. I certainly wouldn't tell people not to...but to be aware of stuff around you - make sure you can still hear sirens etc.

If im riding ching chong I'll whack the Iphone onto random and pootle about.

On the SRAD though i find myself riding differently depending on what music comes on.

For instance,

If im listening to some Boom Boom Pow i nod my head about alot, But then Girls aloud comes on and i start humping my tank , Im just a love machine, but then if slipknot comes on i start hooning round like a Coke crazed lepper Mr. Green Thumbs Up

i listen to music when im on the work scooter as its a 50cc twist and go and sounds awful and really tinny and requires so little attention.

where as on the fzr or rvf i will rarely listen to music unless im doing long motorway miles (going at motorway speeds i doubt you'l hear anything apart from the wind and the engine) on normal rides i'd rather listen to the sound of the engine and how its reacting.

I always listen to music. I've got a pair of in ear noise cancelling ones. They protect my hearing from all all the engine and wind noise and give me something to listen too at the same time.

ive found when listening to my music while riding affects my riding speed and style in a major way. If im listening to Rock or some metal ill go a hell of a lot faster than if im listening to some of the other shite that comes out of the i pod.

I spend a couple hours every day on my bike, but have never really felt the need for music or radio. Riding a bike isn't as boring as driving a car.

I do think it'd be pretty dangerous as well, much more risky than driving a car with very loud music. At the end of the day you haven't got a steel chassis around to protect you so if you fail to pick up on something because you were listening to music. On your bike you risk doing a lot more damage to yourself. That's the way I look at it anyway.
