Your thoughts on best new car for ?11.5k

Time to geta new car - I have £11.5k cash (well from loan but cash to a dealer)

what do you reckon the best car I could likely get for this, reckon I could get quite good deals upgrades buying with cash at the moment.

I'm not fussed about badges or status etc, I have my bike if I want to go fast - a car is a practical thing to me, trips to the tip and tescos .

As an example I was looking at the new fiestas.

I wouldnt buy a new car. Get one that's a year or 2 old and has allready suffered the bulk of it's depreciation.

If you only want it for plodding around, why buy anything expensive?

You should be able to get something for £500-700 with tax and MOT, in reasonable condition for that size vehicle.

Your loan repayments must be at least £230p/m (if over 5 years), or £350 if over 3 years.

Even if the car goes pop after 6months (which is pretty unlikely) you have saved money.

Plus insurance will be cheaper.

Put it like this. Is an £11,500 car 15 times better than a £750 one?

+1 for second hand. You'll get something WAY better for that price second hand than new... And a car isn't exactly the same as a 2t 125. They don't just break after a year

I too would look to get a second hand car with low mileage on it, you will save about 4-5k. Seriously. With 11.5k, i'd be looking at a BMW 1 series. Obviously just a personal preference.

I'd still be looking for dealer second hand to get the backup - anyone any recent experience of buying pre-regs are there many out there, I always reckoned that was the best new/old mix?

11.5k I would be looking at a scooby if you need a practical family car with a bit of fire.

A lexus if you just wanted a car with a comfortable ride

or a focus ST if you want a fairly decent hatch.


But none would be brand new due to the reasons already mentioned

As above with 2nd hand cars. Buy a new car and over 3 years you can say goodbye to 2/3 of its value, a hell of a lot of money for a few boring trips to Tescos.

However if you do want a new car then your best deal would probably be to have got a 0% (or close) car loan from the place you are buying it from.

At that kind of money you have loads of choice. Suspect you could probably get a base model Alfa Mito 1.4 turbo.

Seriously though i'd get an 04 Fiesta Ghia or Zetec for a few grand or something and do something else with the cash if your not bothered about badge and performance etc.

do not be tempted by the current top gear car, i had the recent misfortune of hiring a new 1.6 petrol. It was quick but thirsty, naff inside, handled like a trolley. back in my L reg Audi 80 now, much more better.. but so much slower (1.9 tdi)

Go for a Skoda Octavia? They're reliable, well built and a brand new one can be bought for 11.5k.

But you'd get a decent low mileage TDi for around £6000 thats about 2-3 years old. They handle well too for what they are.

I don't think you can go name calling in this thread as you are currently the fool.

However I advise you do buy a nice new car, so that someone like me can pick up a second hand model with 15,000 miles on the clock for a 1/3rd of the price in 1 and a half years time.

Have you taken out the loan yet, if not dont!

Look at what dealers are doing 0%finance over 3 years (quite a few) then select your car from there.

You will end up spending less on a new car on 0% than you will on a 2-3yr old car having taken out that loan.

11.5 K? I'd be looking at Audi's if I was going to spend that kind of money. (If you can afford the servicing).

Are there any 2 for 1 offers on new cars in your price range at the minute? (Which I doubt as Ford are jumping up in price!)

I seriously, with no exaggeration, would consider using lethal force if this was a real conversation.





And on a serious note, car-wise, with 11.5k I'd have an Alfa (got a thing for them at the moment, and I dont particularly need a reliable car) or something enjoyable but practical, and fucking good looking, insurance, AND put a few grand aside for the servicing over a few years.

On an even more serious note, I'd consider getting Bionic upgrades with your money. Specifically in the cerebral area. And a metal claw that you can use to punish yourself when people ask what you bought for 11k, and your response, is a Fiesta.

Always had Honda's but did have a Mondeo i paid £6k for and had no end of issues so sold it without losing much and bought a 1995 Civic Lsi 1.5 Hatch and its the most fun i've had in ages nippy but nice comfort and handling and its bullet proof.Done 98k and cost me £600 off an old doctor who had looked after it .Cheap tax band but insurance is group 12 so not so low but the economy is great getting around 35-38 mpg on the dot most months.Ok space isn't fantastic but you could get a 98-2000 one for about £2k in the bigger 5 door or even something like a 2000 Accord for about 3k for more luxury.Lexus IS200 is a decent alternative.I looked this month at upgrading with a budget of about 5k but a few have said get a new one and get the 2k smash up fee but i honestly wouldn't swap it for a new car and paying finance mines a genuine import and has soul guess i know now how some feel about certain bikes being special even though its maybe not top end.If you get one on finance do it through the car place as you can bully a great deal.Friend just got a new Renault Clio got £2k off the asking price, £1000 of extras thrown in and 2 years 0% they were so desperate for the business.So new or old both got upsides happy hunting.
