Found some VERY cheap Garmin I3's on ebay. Been using these for the last 3 years or so for work and they work well.

Clicky.

For my recent trip to the Nurburgring I bought a cheapo MyGuide European satnav.
The price for a proper bike satnav is somewhat obscene, also they seem to be just UK and IE mapping. So with the help of a mate who's an electrician (has the right tools) we wired up 12V cigarette electrics to the bikes, cable tied the satnav cradle to the bars and were on our way.
Granted they weren't waterproof like premium bike specific ones, but if it rained I put it into my tank bag.
Just waffling here really. Though maybe this'll act as decent advice for someone considering paying through the nose for something that does the job as well as a top price model. As does Sickpup's original post.

holy crap, that's cheap

things don't half get cheaper as technology gets older

I got my tomtom rider about 3 years ago & it cost £299 & that was with £100 knocked off it. at the same time, garmin were selling their bike satnav for £465

I think I'll be getting one of them, at that price, & who cares if it's not water proof just wrap it in cling film

Thanks Thumbs Up

How do you stop people nicking 'em when the bike's parked up? Are they easily detachable or something?

It is velcro. You just pull the gps from there and put it in your pocket.

https://www.choiceful.com/choiceful-id-69146-Velcro-Heavy-Duty-Black-Stick-On-Strips-50mm-x-100mm.html

Alternatively you can stitch the velcro to your textile trouser. Or stick it on your tank. Your choice..

Or you can buy a GPS box from RAM that is waterproof and put a padlock onto it.If I leave the bike for any length of time I usually just whip it out and carry my streetpilot. You can also use this method if you want to save money by buying a car sat-nav and pocketing the diffrence.£400 is a lot of money even if they are waterproof. My gps is the streetpilot 510c cheap as anything but with bluetooth and memory for songs to.

Got mine today it is extremely small. I feel like I should put on a stupid high pitched voice to talk about it.

Not tested the navigation functions yet, but it looks better than my Michelin, and the fact that it is very small lends itself to on bike usage. I'm thinking I might buy one of those clip and seal boxes from Sainsburys that is the right size and velcro it to the yokes of my bikes. That way I don't have to buy four RAM mounts. I can even arrange some sort of power connection to it.

It says European maps are included on DVD on the listing. I'm guessing you have to copy these to a memory card (Micro SD), then put it in the sat-nav. I've done this with my phone using Garmin Mobile XT, and that wasn't too taxing. I'm guessing this will be even easier provided you put the files in the right place for the sat-nav to find it.

In the blurb, it says "Navigation System Pre-Loaded with UK & Ireland Mapping with Included Latest 2009 European Maps on DVD" so I would imagine you can.

Just ordered mine. Already got a Binatone one, but a) it's too big for the bike and b) it's useless anyway.

The i3 appears to be a pre-install Garmin model which means you can update the maps without the aid of an SD card. I just did mine via USB and its really straightforward.

Just received mine as well, third one I've had.

This one is different to the previous two as the maps are preloaded whereas the other two used Micro SD cards.

If I get a chance over the weekend I will post a picture of the mounts I have on my bike.

They are also incredibly easy to use missing out all the bits on other GPS systems that aren't often used.

I bought a TomTom for the car a couple of years ago as I had to go to a funeral in London and didn't want to not find it or be late.

What I did is to buy a Ram mount for £30, and wire up a cigarette lighter power socket, under the seat in the frame area.

I then purchased a USB car cigarette power cable.

And a 2 metre USB cable.

Works fine, absolutely no probs at all. The tomtom displays the next turn ahead in the bottom left, so I have no problems. I can hear it at junctions, but not at speed.

How do these compare to the Navigo Satnavs sold by ebuyer?

AFAICS:

Garmin: Smaller, less battery power if you need it.

Navigo: Bulkier but bigger screen, Runs TomTom (but needs TomTom as Turbodog is crap), Mount is a fragile bag of shite (so say customer reviews).

The ebay ad says, "is Newly Overhauled" = Refurb?

Yes they are refurbs but you wouldn't know it to look at them. They are also uprated compared to my old ones, internal memory and able to store larger maps.

I can't compare them to the Navigo's as I have never used one but the maps and system are much better than the Tom Tom on my XDA.

Screen size is pretty irrelevant as you can zoom in and out easily.

Probably not that much.
The company will be buying them for around £20-£25 and having to buy them in bulk so once the ebay fee's and paypal fee's are taken out they a making about £5-£8 a unit.
I say good luck to them, they have invested heavily in a piece of old tech and marketed it at a good price that people will actually pay for them rather than going for a more recent model. Nice to see a company not getting greedy, last time I saw refurb units they were being sold by Comet for £90 each and had the old spec and no European mapping..
