Best bike for ?1000

Its all well and good desiring the lastest sports bikes but with the cost of insurance, tax, and general running whats the best you can get for 1k? Is a good SRAD feasible or should you resign yourself to a bandit, RF, or GSXF? Is a Thundercat going to be close enough to a R6 as you want or would you be better off with an old CBR? ZX or ZZR? Supersports Ducati or a 90's Triumph?


Very simply, Given £1000 (or *just* a little more) what is the best bike to buy purely based on performance, value for money, running costs, looks, and IFLI*?

Rs250 or a smaller cc machine, (cbr/vfr/rvf 400) for absolute handling and fun on a good road. To me, having to "work" the bike more up and down the gears knowing if you miss a gearchange you'll pay for it further down the road brings more excitement than a bigger machine.

You may find an rs requiring some work or a tatty 400 but it'll leave you plenty of cash to "perfect" it.

That was my point about picking on up super cheap, using the excess cash for a top end. If that's not an option, maybe look at an older Dr/enduro (4t) drz400sm?

Quite utilitarian, but at the same time a heap of fun.

Honda Bros 400/650
Prefer non faired bikes and single sidedswingarms. Its light with good handling. Cheap available parts. Insurance should be reasonable.
Not fast but torquey.
Might turn some heads

Ben, maybe you're looking at an aspect I never thought of. Three time this week I've used a bike with a speedo that shows average and top speed. Looking at it today and it shows 36 mph average and 121 top. I ain't proud to admit that I only use about 6 miles of NSL roads.

Maybe your suggestion of a Gs500 or Cb500 might be the best bet if your mainly looking for a commuter.
Just "IMHO" again , personally I'd prefer something with a bit more character,eg. Rs/cbr. Rather than the safe option.





I may be talking bollox, finding out the hard way,prescription painkillers and a few real ales don't go.

28,000 miles and 41,000. Clean bikes by the looks of them. Maybe i chose the IFLI* option over everything else

Go on then Pat, explain your obsession. I look at them and just don't see the appeal. The single sided arm is nice along with the standard can but the rest is just bland. I can only assume they do 150mph and 70 mph to the gallon.
