I have been wondering lately as when I was at Uni and had the choice of riding either the S4 or the RXS100 and how the 100 was so much cheaper that there must a super cheap bike to run.

Now 125cc 4t probably the cheapest but are but IMO as quite dull.

So what is the cheapest bike to run/buy/service/maintain motorcycle in your opinion that still has a tiny bit of fun factor?

As for the OT, I have to agree, CG125 was made for that purpose!

FWIW my enfield (500cc classic Iron Cylinder model) does around 80mpg, has about 20 real wheel HP (with a re-jet, new air/filter and exhaust), enough torque to pull better and more satisfyingly out of corners (I've had both pegs down in them too) than a 125/250 traditional style bike and even though it's really only comfortable sitting around the 50-55mph (verified by GPS - speedo says around 60-65) whist cruising - it's way under-geared so some change the front sprocket to get a bit more top end speed - it will do this 2-up, laiden, and have enough grunt to not be crying if you hit a hill.

Grated it does require more up-keep than a 'modern' bike but given that I can actually do pretty much all of the servicing myself because it's just like a big meccano set (valves, points, cable adjustment takes no time at all), parts are extra-ordinarily cheap (eg, full English made exhaust system for £130 - go Indian and it's more like £80-90) and easy to get hold of from a particular supplier this means you don't spend much on doing it.

I'd also comment on the kudos on owning something like it too; everyone stops to talk to you about one their grandad/uncle/neighbour had. Admittedly it can get quite tiring explaining to 95% of them that no it's not 50yrs old and that it was made in India, not Redditch, but it's still quite a fun aspect of ownership to an extent - plus girls love them because it doesn't look threatening and looks like a 'real' motorbike, which is always a bonus!

So anyway, given I spent £1600 on buying it (with only 70kms), it cost me £100 fully comp to insure (3yrs no claims @22) to sum up I'd say I get a pretty good bang (not my bike btw, but has the same exhaust so sounds just like it) for my buck! That's just my tuppence ha'penny's worth anyway.

Why do you ask incidentally? Thinking of chopping the S4? Laughing

I had a little Rieju SMX125 4 stroke supermoto jobby when I lost my licence and rode on a CBT for a few months Embarassed . It was slow as shit but had really fun handling and good brakes. It got nicked before I ever worked out the mpg but it had to be pretty damn good being a little suzuki 125 4 stroke engine. Only cost me £600 and the insurance company paid out £1250 so it was a pretty economical purchase Laughing I'd get one again if I needed a city commuter only I'd get a bigger chain next time Rolling Eyes

I still can't seem to get bored with my 125. Just weird I guess.

Last year, I bought my CG for £250. It did nigh on 100mpg over the 4k I rode it for and would cruise at around 55mph. Didn't cost any significant amount to add to my CBR insurance either. It caused several thousand pounds worth of damage to the front door/wing of an Audi 4x4 and all I needed to do was bend a mirror stalk back into shape. It cost me £5 for a new headlight bulb, 2 oil changes in 4,000 miles (a litre a go) and, after failing to kill it myself, ended up selling it for £330 on Ebay.

Subsequently, I sold the CBR as, in hindsight, I found it as stimulating as a kitchen appliance and then bought my XR125. Which is just as cheap to run (if a little expensive to buy in the first place), yet even more durable.

Yeah, perversely it actually got slightly worse mpg in stock trim with much leaner jetting than it has now - never see below 75mpg these days. Main thing is that because it's an engine in a fairly low state of tune which mostly runs in the lower revs because that's where all the torque is (no real point in running to the red-line - not that it has one, the valves just bounce - a bit Shocked when it happens) in every gear cause you don't really get any more real tractable power.

Andy C wrote:

The 350 is supposed to be the purist's choice because it was the way the engine was originally designed (the 500 is a 350 with a bigger bore) and so is supposed to be smoother and the transmission supposed to match it better - top speed and acceleration of the 350 is pretty much the same as the 500, just the 500 has more torque where it matters so is better for carrying pillions etc. That said, I'd have prob had a 350, but a 500 (in army trim with panniers) came up just 15miles down the road from me (they're not exactly as abundant as your usual jap fair) at roughly half the RRP with only 70kms on it so it was a no brainer really!

Less powerful bikes can still be fun - and I've had a few 'hurry up dude' moments with some more powerful fair in the real twisty stuff too!

Old classics are always worth looking at as a cheap hack, You can save a fortune on road tax and insurance which goes a long way to reducing the overall running cost. I ride a 30 yr old yamaha xs650 as my daily commuter, tax exempt and insurance only £68 per year. The engine is virtually bullet proof and many examples are known to have gone way past 100k on the clock, servicing is cheap if you do it yourself and the engine is very basic and simple to work on. Performance is nothing startling, it will do a little over the ton if you need it but will sit quite happy at 70 all day and do 55 mpg which is not bad for a 50bhp motor. I've just bought another one and plan to put an open sidecar on it for running the dog about on, cheaper than using the van.!

The motors a 107cc 4 speed semi auto engine. It's a Lifan engine, and pretty much a copy of the 90's but with an extra gear. £175 Delivered including carb, filter, gear lever, kickstart and loom.

Done 1000 miles on it now and it hasn't burnt any oil. Cruises along at 40-45 no probs. Would probably go better had I not been green laning and dented the downpipe quite badly. You can see this in the picture.

Another option is the pit bike exhausts, mine is from a monkey.

But you just can't beat the old round shape!

hmmm. ive put a 17 tooth sprocket on mine and it cruises at about 40 - 45 now Confused doesthe the extra 20cc give it any more power or torque than the honda engine? with the gearing mine has at the moment i feel it could cruise at 50 and top at 62- 5 with a little more grunt. Thumbs Up

Not all that faster but the fourth gear is a massive help, aswell as having alot more grunt up the hills. 90's seem very flat in comparison.
