i know that my bike licence doesn't cover me to ride the above vehicles because i passed my full bike test in 2004 (rules changed in 2001 afaik).

but from what i can gather you can ride quads, trikes etc on a provisional car licence with l plates so long as you are over 17, and so long as they are single seat and don't weigh more than 550kg (anything heavier is classed as a car) you won't need a qualified driver,

also am i right in thinking there are no engine size limitations like there are with a bike provisional?

if it turns out i need to pass my car test to ride a quad/trike solo i might just go the other way and build a nice v8 lawn mower as i have full category a,k and p but only provisional category b (k being the mower one),

From what i can gather the only way to get the equivalent to the old b1 entitlement is to pass a full car/b test, as the b entitlement covers the vehicles categorised as needing a b1 entitlement.

You could probably get away with riding a trike or quad as a learner, but I reckon they might possibly try and shaft you with the insurance.

as you want to ride a single seat quad/trike on a learner car licence (cat B) there is no weight restriction like there is for folks riding them on a full bike licence (cat B1) as B1 is a sub category & if your license has category B then you can drive anything in that category on L plates

Thats the thing b1 isn't covered by the full bike licence (catagory A) anymore, i was offered a ram 250 cheap wich is what made me check my licence to see if i was covered,

the only way i can ride quad or trikes is to have the b1 entitlement which only comes with the car/b licence now not the bike/a licence, passing the car/b test makes the b1 a full licence too but you can't take a test for b1 in its own right , it just surprised me when i saw the part about exceptions about qualified drivers for single seaters and l plates.

can you imagine if all the 17yr olds started ripping round on the latest generation of 450/650 race style quads, with not so much as a glance at the highway code book.

even moped riders need a cbt before they are let loose on the public , heck i can't imagine the insurance on a quad/trike to be any more than what newly test passed car drivers pay, i know people that have been quoted £1000's for there first years car insurance,

If people can save on theory tests/lesson/practical test etc i am sure that would go a long way towards paying for insurance , and if they are really lucky they can use the no claims against a either a car or bike in the future (depending whether they used car or bike insurers),

all i would do is try to find a bike insurer that deals with quads and trikes and see if they would accept my 6 yr protected bike no claims

you can do a B1 test you just have to find a test center that does it not that many around

as for a 17 year old and a high powered trike on a provisional
very doubtful that anywhere would insure them
might get lucky on a quad but still doubtful unless its a 50cc

like said in the eye's of the law yes you can on a provisional
but in reality not many if any will insure you
