These are shit, and, despite what it says on the box, every time it chucks it down with rain I have at least one spark plug arcing. Replacing them can work as an instant fix (providing it has stopped raining), but does anyone know if there is an alternative to these that aren't so appalling?

Also, I've seen and heard about an ignition components sealant spray that dries to form a kind of protective layer of goo over your stuff. Has anyone resorted to one of these, and if so, did it solve your problem?

Thanks in advance Very Happy.

I've had NGK spark plug caps on all my bikes and not had any issues when it rained.

Interesting. It probably doesn't help that the plugs are in quite an exposed position on my bike. Also I will point out that it isn't normally a problem, it has happened to me only a few times. Twice when it has bucketed it down and once when it snowed. It's still rather annoying though.

If its arcing then you can't have it assembled right, or the cable is smaller than the rubber sealer on the HT lead.

Just get soem WD 40 or such and spray the plug/cap/ht lead and that should stop it from happening.

You might want to consider an all-rubber one like this:-

You can put the rubber HT side seal/johnny thingy from your old cap on it too over the lipped bit. I'd stick some silicone in there to and squidge it about a bit to make a really good job of it.

If you put a small cabletie on the plug bit, you can make a really good seal plug side too ... job done!! Thumbs Up

Just covers the problem not fix it.

As said the NGK plug caps are on millions of bikes and not many have problems. Most the smaller bikes have them in direct fire from the rain without causing problems.

If you have replaced it that many times chances are the HT lead is needing replacement as well as that may be breaking down.

Blue, that is a great idea. I will be sure to try that out.

The leads are new. I reckon the rubber may not be forming a tight enough seal around the lead like iooi said.

I know many bikes use these caps, but many bikes also never see rain, whilst my bike lives outside and is used all year round in all weathers, hence why I think it's the caps that aren't up to the job. My Vespa had one of these caps but I ran it with side panels and it lived in a garage.

Like I said, it's not very often that I lose spark, only when the weather is very bad. However, this doesn't make it any less annoying!

Thanks for all your help so far, guys.

why not? i didnt know there were rules about plug caps! can someone explain.

Correct, although FM reception is generally ok with unsuppressed HT.
It used to kill police shortwave broadcasts, great thing to have in a getaway vehicle Wink
