.....as a race bike.

Seen a few and wondered what people thought. The few I've seen have had full rebuilds from the ground up with new bits where they were needed, any thoughts?

as long as engines strong and frames straight i dont see why not.

its a common thing.

binned my original bike at cadwell recently so i've bought another for my daily ride and im rebuilding the first as a trackbike. rear subframes bent but nothing a blowtorch and a hammer cant solve and my crash protectors saved the engine and frame so some race fairing and new clocks later i'll have a servicable trackbike Very Happy

much cheaper than returning it to the road. i've just bought 2 small panels for my new bike (side inspection panel and rear tail and together they cost over half its gonna cost me for full race fairing! madness..

It's being built from scratch using a completely new frame, and a mixture of salvage and brand new parts.

The frame has no VIN however, which I'm led to believe could lead to some issues if I were to race it.

I believe a lot (if not most) of the race organisers will not let you in unless you have a chassis number. Give them a buzz and ask.

Personally I'd never buy one without a chassis number. I have no problem buying CAT C or D vehicles, or even ones that have been repaired, after all, once they have the new parts fitted they are no different than they were the day they rolled out of the factory. But I'd never buy something without a chassis / VIN number.

Thumbs Up

Well Thundersport GB will let you provided the frame has never had any numbers on it.(i.e. the numbers haven't be ground off the frame).

The ACU handbook states that the frame numbers must be free from tampering. Suggesting that if there never were any numbers then you should be able to race it. Thinking

Hmm. I'm waiting for an email back from Bemsee as their regs are a little confusing.

I think it should be ok, but we will see.

Unsure whether to go for a rebuilt bike over one that's been a racer all it's life.

Personally I wouldn't be too fussed, aslong as the frame isn't dented or fooked in. Along as frame numbers are present also. I mean both of my track bikes are 13 years old and im sure in their time they've been thrown down the track, but both are in good condition and straight so no issues with it.

MY SP1 is a CAT C, i got a complete bargain on it.

Toured on it and nurburgring'd it, which in my eyes puts them through more strain than a trackday.

Iv'e always wondered about frame numbers on track bikes as i was going to get one off ebay but a lot of them had no V5's so how would you know if they were nicked or not and i assumed you had to have the V5 to race,my mate who motocrosses has to have one.

Hi

Race clubs started to insist on chassis numbers and non tampering as so many stolen bikes landed up being used for racing.

Check very carefully that the chassis never had a number. While brand new replacement frames won't have a number these are not exactly common.

Pretty much the only reason for tampering with a frame number is to hide its identity, so pretty much only for stolen bikes.

All the best

Keith
