I took my driving test today, i failed to much surprise!
I was un-fairly marked to be fair, ive had minors put down for safety when pulling off from the side of the road, i mean indicating, cheking mirrors, blind spot, mirrors as moving off and blind spot again, how much safer can you get?!

i have a couple more which seem very stupidly marked and hes also put a serious (failed) for not going back into the left hand land when coming off a round-about when i was instructed to head for the city centre and i was in the lane which said city-centre (left hand land said something completely diffrent), i beileve i drove very safely if anything i over-observated to make sure i used plenty of observations.

As soon as the guy got in the car i knew he had something up with him because he was yanking the car seat around and levers to get the seat in the correct position, what person does that to someone elses car?!

Any adive would be greatly apprecited, ive took my car test to help my grandparents with transport and shopping as there both disabled and waiting another month and another £60 seems stupid after today.

If theres anything ive left out just ask, to be fair if i thaught i did something that warrented failure then sure but my grandad is an ex-examiner and he said my driving was well up to standard and i should pass easily as long as i dont do anything stupid?

Thanks in advance.

you can still drive on L plates with your grandad in the car as long as he has a licence. you could do that for now, gaining experience till you feel up to booking your test again.

Ive been doing that for the past 2 months getting ready for my test, its just easier to take the test and pass it then i can use the car for beach with friends etc. i dont have my bike anymore as it was stolen and dont have the money for a new one (car was cheap as dirt) tryed looking for cheap bikes but nothing came up, theres alot more reasons than just taking them around but thats the main reason.

Still just want some advice on why ive basically been failed for no REAL reasons it was as if he was looking to fail me and marking me on things i didnt do wrong.

What do you want us to say?

Appeal? I don't even think there is a process, and on what basis can you appeal - that your grandpops said you're driving is ok. Pffft.

As for the guy adjusting the chair, I really don't know where to start, perhaps he wanted to get comfortable? I do it pretty much every time I get in someones car.

You failed, unlucky.

Suck it up and take it again, but this time do better.

Simple.

Mirror should have been first.

How long was the stretch of road where you hung about in the 'city centre' lane? Did you move into that lane without indicating? Had you been going straight on at the r'bout? Google maps would be helpful.

If your driving is like your SPAG then no wonder you failed.

Se previous reply.

Well don't bother then, reduces congestion with one less driver on the road.

Ok ok no need to reply like that.

I was only looking to see if there was any way of someone else having a look to see if i was un-fairly marked wrong (and it does happen)

No im not saying i should of passed because my grandad said i was good enough but by standards i did everything correctly and in a decent manner, i drove safetly and how i should of, hes marked me down on things like observation whilst doing a 3 point turn, checking both windows every single point of my turn (always checking every time i did something) and hes marked me down as failing to use observation?!

Looks like i will have to take it again fair enough was only looking for someone to shed some light in-case there was something to appeal against or w/e.

For adjusting the chair, your telling me you get in sumone's car, yank the lever's brutally yank the chair around as if ur trying to pull it off etc.? i think not, was like he was having a bad day and took it out on me (might of over-exagerated a bit but you get the idea) never mind eh.

Cue lots of grumpy (but faultless never-the-less) old people leaping onto their soapboxes telling you to wind your neck in and suck it up... Wink

Maybe the examiner was having a bad day, unfortunately, nothing you can do about it. Reading your post though, could it be that you were too jumpy or cautious?

I got marked down for being hesitant, you can go to far on both directions... Ultra-safe -> Ultra-unsafe. Need to aim for the middle.

Thank you, first decent reply Smile I was'nt nervous as such once i got on the road i just drove, i was'nt that overly observating i just made sure i did all my observations so was'nt driving like a 'SPAG'

Guess i will have to do it again thaught it was worth asking just incase because you never know Smile

For damofo, fair enough mirrors first i maby did that wrong but i dont see how indicating first then mirrors is un-safe? isnt going to make a diffrence in the slightest is it.

Secondly for the round-about (i cant use google maps i suck i know) i was told to take the third exit heading towards city centre (which was basically straight across the round about) i turned off and stayed in the lane which he specified (one marked city centre) the other lane was marked liskeard completely diffrent, he had directed me to head towards city centre which i did, he told me at the end of the test i failed because i didnt go into the left hand lane which WASNT marked city centre, as far as i know i was following his instruction properly but that is a serious fail?

Paying £60 extra is just more money and in this climate of economy its not the best, maby 1 less person on the road but no need to be an asshole about it people use car's for diffrent reasons, i pay my road tax etc. just like you i have a right to use the road same as you so stop bitching about it, some car drivers are assholes, so are some bikers there are less bikers so less assholes more car drivers more assholes get used to it!

My grandad isnt really biased, i wanted to take my test sooner he made me practice for 2 months because he didnt think my driving was ready he made sure it was perfect before i went, forget that he said i could pass easily thats not the point, if i can drive safely and in a civilized manner why should i be failed, as far as i see it ive been un-fairly failed.

Only other thing is....

The driving test isn't about driving in the most logical way, it's about driving in a way that means you pass. Unfortunately (and perhaps there's been element of this here) unless your instructor specifically tells you this, you'll probably find yourself doing things that seem perfectly reasonable, only for the examiner to fail you.

On the up side, you'll know the next time.

Thumbs Up

SPAG = Spelling, punctuation and grammar. Rolling Eyes

'Observating' is not a word either.

thejdemon wrote:

Yes, yes it is. Say I'm riding along, and someone whacks their indiactor to pull out, or change lanes (which is more common), as I approach and am almost on top of them, without looking to see if I was there. When someone does this, it makes me think that tehy haven't seen me and that they are just going to pull over. I start initiating escape plans, just because some dumb fuck couldn't be arsed to see if there is actually a gap before they put their signal on. You should look to see if you are able to pull out without impeding any other motorists, before decing whether you are going to make the manoeuvre and indicating. So yes, it does matter.

It's difficult to determine whether or not he was harsh to you from your description. What I would say though is that anyone incapable of using Google maps cannot be deemed capable of operating one tonne of metal on Her Majesty's highway.

It's is not a right, it is a priviledge granted to you by society. A priviledge which you have not earned to do in a car as you haven't reached the required standard, which is too low anyway, IMO.

thejdemon wrote:

I don't see where I'm bitching tbh, just putting forward my opinion. You are the one complaining about failing your driving test.

thejdemon wrote:

Clearly your driving IS NOT perfect though. Jesus, no-one's driving is. I make mistakes every time I get in the car, but I'd bet I could pass my test tomorrow no problem.

thejdemon wrote:

From your comment above, you did not drive in a civilised manner, so it would appear that you have been entirely fairly failed.

Sounds about right, i was driving normally and not to pass (i thaught driving normally i would pass, if that makes sense) and true i will know for next time just have to go over the paper he gave me and look at all the areas they mark and practice more i guess.

I apologize about the posts kind of a rant i guess was pretty upset i failed (as i guess anyone would be) another month to wait till the next slot so plenty of time for the practicing Thumbs Up

Failing is part of the process. As somebody else said, taking a test is not like 'proper' everyday driving. A pass doesn't mean you are a good driver, merely that you have shown enough competence to drive in a manner that you have been instructed.

Don't forget that the examiner fails and passes people day in day out, so has a very good idea of who is ready to be let loose on the road and who isn't. He isn't failing you for anything but your driving ability.

I failed first time, and felt pretty hard done by. Years later I realise that I was a pretty poor driver at 17 years of age with no experience. Keep practising, try again and good luck Thumbs Up .

What you have to realise about BCF is there are people here who were never young. The just appeared here as an adult never knowing how it was to be young and a bit impetuous.

Basically, their creator thought they'd substitute 'a sense of being young' for perfect spelling and grammar and in some cases a mildly over-bearing sense of righteousness along with a dollop of over-sensitivity to the very youthful impetuosity they were denied.

Or, I've over analysed another thread.

thejdemon did you actually have lessons from an instructor for your test or just from your grandad?

thejdemon wrote:

And that is where you are going wrong, it all has to be done in a certain order. I think you need to start accepting the examiners comments rather than assuming you're safe enough and good enough to drive on the road. From the quote above I'm guessing you haven't had any official lessons...

I was wrong i know MsM nerves got to me a little, went out for an hour before the test and with all the nagging within that hour i was concentrating so much on so many things i could handle what i was doing (if that makes sense) i get put under alot of pressure to perform to standards within my family which kinda sucks Razz

No ive never had a proper driving lesson i was thinking to myself like 2 seconds ago to suggest getting proper driving lessons just to see what there like and the diffrence, i know in the real world indicating before you mirror wouldnt make alot of diffrent but to them it would.

I agree with the minors he gave me but it was the face he instructed me to head towards the city centre then told me i should of stayed in the left hand lane (which was not marked for it) which is what i failed for which annoyed me, supposed i can see your points of view and its true they follow it by the book on how you have to pass and not how you have to drive.

Thanks anyway guys Smile

EDIT: Shaggy it was the first one that wasnt being sarcy, all i did was ask for some advice and yes i was a bit pissed off that i failed so i ranted a bit (doesnt seem like some of you have never been angry before or failed at something and been angry about it)

One of the few things you should keep doing in the real world from the driving test is look where you are going before indicating to go into it!

It happens and if there was anything over around 30 seconds of road where it potentinally turns into a dual carridgeway by the sounds of things, as its got 2 lanes, you always move over to the left as soon as its safe to do so, apparently... Laughing

Tutton that was the problem he instructed me to take the lane which leads to city centre, the other lane split off and went down to the A38, he should of made his instructions clearer if that was an issue, he said when we first set off, always keep to the left hand lane going straight ahead unless road or traffic signs or HE says diffrently.... he said diffrently so i followed his instruction and failed because of it that was my issue he said i would of passed if i didnt do that.. i mean WTF?

Ah well live and learn i spose, ill ignore him next time and go into the left lane regardless to be safe, got my next test booked is a bloody month away 24th august! am checking page every day from now for cancellations so hopefully one pops up, sooner car test is done and dusted i can save for bike test and get back on 2 wheels!!

As an ADI I see many issues brought up when people have not been successful on thier tests. You need to discuss with your instructor what the examiner had to say in his debrief. On your next lesson ask your instructor to take you to the areas of concern. With regards to a serious on moving off, you may have got your timing wrong or not seen a hazard, many people go through the motions of observations without actually observing. I have not come across an examiner who will go out of their way to fail people. Some are jobs worths, but most want you to pass as a safe driver, if you do not reach the standard on the day don't get put off, put the things right that went wrong and go for it again.
