As per title really. The SV doesn't have a hugger, and my Ohlins looked a little battered last time I took it off the bike. Now cleaned up, looks much better. Saw this in Superbike Magazine, thought it looked like a simple idea to a stupid problem.

Thoughts and ideas? Smile

It's a good idea although an old car inner tube from the skip bahind a tyre fitters and two cable ties is a lot cheaper.

Coat it in waxoyl first.

Next you will want a cover for the shock tube because that keeps getting dirty. Stop being a tart and ride the damn thing, Once a shock reaches its sell by date its usually the mileage thats killed it far before corrosion eats it.

You'd be amazed at how ironic that is if you knew me. Mr. Green

Bah, none of the tyre changers have any car inner tubes, used or otherwise. Sad

That's odd, because a lot of trailers still use tubed tyres. Also common to fit them if the rims are knacked on your car wheels.

Why don't you invest in hugger? Confused

Pointless having two huggers isn't it?

Eh? You said the Sv doesn't have a hugger, and I'm assuming that you stated that fact as the thread is about the Sv. Am I missing something here?

Sorry, really didn't explain myself very well (teach me for rushing, sorry). I've got a hugger, but I don't use it, as it's rubbish at protecting anything. I'm sure there are better designed huggers about, but none of them fit my year of SV, and only the shock's worth protecting. The hugger was on last time I removed the shock, and it was caked in crap.

I'm going to be phoning round a few more places when they open up for a car inner tube. Thumbs Up

No one's pointed out any obvious reason as to why it would be a stupid idea. Thanks in advance all!

No problem.

I'd personally invest in a proper shock sock. I'm assuming the Sv is a tidy bike (ohlins), and I wouldn't be wanting to cover such a nice shock in a car innertube!

A shock sock will be easily removable by velcro (or similar) to clean the shock. Rubber will most likely keep any moisture in which is obviously bad!

These people were trying to sell on the XJR owners club site when they first came out. The general feeling was they'd be shit and no one bought one to my knowledge.

One concern was that the sock thing could hold water & dirt and cause more harm than good. (But bare in mind our shocks are on the sides of our bikes, not underneath, so probably more likely to catch the rain).

That's why I mentioned the waxoyl. Wink

I did the inner tube and waxoyl thing on my last GPZ, worked a treat. The waxoyl stops it corroding, the tube stops dirt and crap blasting the waxoyl off.

You could cover the shock in heavy grease before you fitted the tube. I think i'll be doing this on the xr, i have a few inner tubes lying around. One from the back wheel would be just the right size.

I'd be a bit concerned this or even waxoyl might have some effect on seals in it.
Also can they get a bit hot when worked hard? Rolling Eyes

On balance better leave them on display as intended most likely.

If the seal aren't oil proof, they wont do a very good job of keeping the damping oil inside the shock.

Waxoyl wont damage much. People have been spraying the whole underside of their cars (including the shocks) with it for decades, this application is precisely what it is designed for. I do all my shocks in it.

I tend to just coat the shock in a good amount of wd40 after a clean.

Does anyone know if this is sufficient, or should i be using some type of grease stuff?
