Well the suspension in my bike is currently got a special shock in it for smaller people and dropepd through the yokes a inch or so, and i really dont like the way it handles. feels quite sketty over bumps and the like, not absorbing anything.
FZR600R 1994 foxeye 4jh model

Is there any kind of upgrades out there, im looking for something relativly cheap to make it handle better, ive seen a hagon shock but he wants 290 quid plus postage for it, or a nitron shock for similar price...
I was wondering will any bigger bike shock fit without much adjustment?, if yes what kind of shocks would i be looking for bikes around 181 kg dry weight if that helps
cheers

For a budget, best bet is to get the shock serviced, replace the spring for your weight, however, you're looking about £100 for each of those.

Will feel as good as a new shock designed for you though.

Do you need that short leg shock ?

If not then put a std one back on and lift the forks back to where they should be.

If you do then have a play around with the front forks and see if lifting or lowering a bit will help.
Could be they have just guessed and got it wrong.

Could even be that its set to hard at the rear, or has no fluid in the forks.

Get a standard shock off ebay for cheap and service it at a specialist. There's that place in stowmarket that does it, cant remember its name though. Mate likes their work.

I can vouch for the quality of hagon shocks. Might be basic, but cetainly better than the standard shock (i had one on the ZX6R and it performed infinitely better than the replacement rear shock. The quality certainly felt better than the old kwaka shock.

Either way, if you're planning to keep the bike for any length of time, I'd get one. Nitron's prices quote EX VAT so beware. They look nice mind and do springs to suit your weight.

It has its got standard dogbones and shock with it as well as shortened ones (on atm) shorter shock (on atm) but standard shock all the paint is rusted off, so i dont think looking at the age of it thats its going to feel much better to be honest.
I wanted something that will make it feel a bit nicer on the rear atm, it feels like im the suspension Laughing

If it's that shagged, then just buying a second hand shock will make it feel like new bike, as long as the new shock isn't shagged either.

Im not so sure its shagged as such but more feels almost wrong for me, i was the same height as the chap you had it before, kind of baffles me why hes done this to the suspension,
Its so small i can flatfoot both feet with quite a bit of spare room still Laughing, Looking at the mot cert it says advisory rusted rear suspension, im guessing that is the old standard spring that is rusty as chook,
Just need to find summin to fit on, im hearing from other forums R6 shocks fit quite nicely with a tiny bit of grinding..

Bit of a bastardisation though really. I'd say if you want to upgrade the shock, do it properly. The R6 shock will have been designed for the R6. Weights and all. SV1000 owners go on about changing their shocks for GSXR shocks, but it really makes cack all difference.

You can probably find a R6 shock in better condition than yours though, so might be the best option with price considered. Wouldn't spend more than £30 off ebay though.

The linkages themselves are all moving ok I assume?

With my SP1 I managed to get the rear shock on track simply by twiddling.

I've never heard a bad thing about Hagons. The Hagon Nitros, I believe, are much better than the Ohlins they put on XJR's (which are shit).

Hmm, going to be hard pushed to find one for that price i suspect, can old standard shocks be rebuilt or do they need to be ohlins or similar?
By linkage do you mean the dogbones and the like? all seems to be moving freely when im not sat on it, but now you mention it if i sit on the bike and wheel backwards i get a squeek out of the shock or suspension by sounds of it. hmm
how should i go about checking it properly?

You can rebuild standard shocks, but it generally costs a lot, and many places don't like to do it as the standard shocks are often not designed to be rebuilt. Parts are often customer fabricated for the rebuild, and YMMV.

I just sold a shock to someone here for £30, it's from a Daytona 600. If he has no use for it (he's looking into it), I'll get him to forward to you to see if you have any use for it if you like? The shock was on the bike for a matter of months before it was replaced.

Oh, and I had a bad experience with Hagon quality, but they did bend over backwards to try and fix it for me.... repeatedly.

yeah id possibly be intrested in that,
just feels like it isnt pushing the bike down at all, doing 100+ (private roads Laughing) and touch a slight bump or anything and the whole suspension just goes tits, and looses it on the rear will end me up in a (private off road hedge Laughing) soon if i dont get it sorted and carry on

As someone mentioned, I'd definitely check the other bears and bushes. Could be your swing arm bearings (among others) are fooked for instance?

Just a case of removing everything and checking them. It's a weekends work.

Cant you tell on swing arm bearings by getting the rear in the air and trying to pull the swingarm side to side like you can with wheel bearings, i had them go on my 50's swingarm, dosnt feel quite like that i think, but ill have a gander tommorow, and soak it in some wd40 on the dogbones and linkages see if it frees anything up a bit.

I dont wanna go replacing bearings and bushes atm, dropped it by accident this morning i blame the shorty sidestand the owner fitted to go with his shock, so it isnt very secure so it went into my garage wall Laughing so im now trying to also source FZR mirrors in white (fucking impossible??) and a new screen, and have bought some plastech to fix the fairing its cracked. pah. all these problems its worse than my rs125 nearly..

I've only ever stripped it down myself, so I couldn't give you an answer if there's an easy way to check, sorry. It's not a tough job to strip it to check, just a bit time consuming. If everything's ok, you can just repack it with grease and reassemble. How old is the bike? How long have you owned it for? When did they last get checked? Pulling figures out the air with no real authority, more memory, I think most service schedules put the checks in with major servicing but you need to check your owners manual.

It's just a remote reservoir. Doesn't have to be fully adjustable (probably will be, most modern sports bikes are).

I'd say check your linkages and swing arm first though. Otherwise you might replace the shock and find there was nothing wrong with it in the first place.
