Anyone else look for that elusive last gear? Even when you know in the back of your head you're in top gear already!

What's the deal with that?

I've just gone from a 6 speed 125 to a 5 speed 660. So now I'm short two gears! (One real and one imaginary!)

Hi

Some gearboxes allow the lever to move up when in top, just pushing against the return spring. Makes it easy to know you are in top without attempting to actually change gear.

All the best

Keith

embarrassingly so yes, but I've also on a rare occasion tried to go lower than 1st too Embarassed

Mind you when you're at speed on the freeway it's hard to tell with wind noise if you're in top or not.
No Harm in checking Thumbs Up

Always do it. Bit like getting to the top of the stairs then trying to walk up another imaginary stair. Freaks you out.

I'm always trying to change up...I also find all the false neutrals too. I don't find it embarrassing, I just shrug my shoulders and think 'oh well, feels like I should have another gear to go...' Neutral

Hi

Suspect for most people they change up because the bike feels busy because it isn't smooth due to the revs.

You need less revs (so more torque, which probably means a bigger engine which would likely mean more vibration and as such is self defeating) or better engine balance (balance shafts).

All the best

Keith

What you want is an old Bridgestone GTR, or quite a few of the early japanese bikes.
These had a rotary gearbox. All the gears were up,then when you went up from top gear it went staight into first again Shocked

So the gears went 1 up 2 up 3 up 4 up 5 up 1 up 2 up 3 up 4 up 5 up 1... infinetly. Confused

First time you tried it at the red line in top there wouldn't be enough left to try again

Vaguely related a neighbour had a Nova SR and went to change from 2nd to 3rd and missed and hit 1st. Result was it snapped a rocker arm.

All the best

My bike creates its maximum power around 9.5-10k

Now i rarely got above 7k in normal riding and even at that rpm in the lower gears it feels/sounds like the end of the world, so i change up

On the CB500, if you're in top gear, both the speedo and rev counter point in the same direction.

I do it quite often when cruising, I think everyone wants a quiet life to be honest and its nicer to pootle along at 70-80 with low revs.

Strangely enough Ive not found myself doing it when giving it the beans!!

Have done on my other bikes though Laughing

With a stock 'busa on stock gearing you have about 6 times the thrust in top gear that you need to do manage 70mph.

All the best
