PostPosted: 14:10 - 08 Aug 2009    Post subject: MOT - What exatly is required? Am i on the right track? Reply with quote

Afternoon -

Just got a new bike, a Cagiva Planet 125

it has no tax/test.

I want to get the bike on the road as soon as possible and have a few questions what is required on a MOT.

Fly wheel cover missing but one on its way
Breaks are ok
Tires ok
No air box (just filter cloth over the carb inlet)
no kick start or electric start (electric start has broken but new one on order, is it required?)
No indicators
all lights are ok
battery doesn't have a bracket, just held securely with cable ties
i may need a heat plate for my exhaust because its close to my leg?
No speedo, was thinking about getting a digital cycle one?
Spark plug rubber cover missing - still works ok.
Chain guard missing but new one on order.

I am going to sort out all the problems but i wanted it on the road as im doing it.

Few pictures attached, please let me know if anything sticks out.

Cheers

Sorry about the sh1t pictures.

Ask your local MOT tester.

You don't need a speedo for the MOT test, however I'm not sure how legal it is to not actually have one.(Legality and MOT tests are two different things).

The indicators are fine.

Don't know about the kickstart/electric start to be honest.

The bike doesn't even need a engine for the MOT. However if it does have one, it will be emissions tested.

From the looks of things the number plate is illegal.
No chain guard (probably required).
No rear reflector.
Do you have a number plate light?
Do both brakes work?
Is the chain tight?
do you have dipped, full beems and parking lights?
Does the brake light work from both brakes?

Wheel and stearing bearings will be checked, along with suspension movement and seals.

I got a new standard plate today from Halfords ( Evil or Very Mad £16 Evil or Very Mad )
I have dipped and full beam, sorry to sound stupid but what are side lights?
At the moment the chain is pretty slack but i can sort that out, its in good condition and so are the sprockets.
Break light works ok
i dont have a plate light, it is required? if so would a cheap LED be ok?

Anyone know about the start? i cant see the MOT tester pushing it down the hill to start it, would be funny if he did.

i know at my local MOT place theyll try and get the bike started for about 2 minutes, and if they cant they wont bother doing the MOT.
i know for a fact he wouldnt run it down the road lol.

but if you explain to tester he might be ok with, down to the bloke on the day i guess.
i would of thought it would need some way of starting it to pass.

worst way rounds you could just put it in for an MOT, see what it fails on and then you know what you need to fix.

leigh.

The last bike i got MOT'ed was a 625cc kick start only single. I'm pretty sure i'm the only person ont he planet who could get it to start, but it passed it's MOT. Maybe they just didnt want to admit they weren't man enough to get it going? Laughing

No it won't be tested Rolling Eyes

In terms of the kickstart and electric start, it depends how nice the M.O.T man is and if he'll let you bump start it.

When I used to work at a garage we bump started a VFR400 for an M.O.T but we were nice Laughing
