Sorry for the expletive in the title but I just wanted to convey they amount I don't know about tyre choice (Or maybe its how much little i need to know Question )

I haven't ridden (regularly) for about a year, and before that I lived off race scrubs (Supercorsa's raceTech's) for a good few years, and before that whatever the bike came with or wore the rubber down to the canvas beofre selling the bike.

So, Yamaha FZ6, naked, like corners and fast twisty riding (possible trackdays) with regular crappy commute in raining and through town. (There won't be a lot of long distance riding or Motorways).

Any ideas? Cost isn't and issue.

Been looking at Supercorsa's (lots or makes) BT014's or is it 016's now?

Shrug.

Cheers

Luke

Pilot Road 2s are what I would suggest. They just handle a trackday ok as long as you don't blat it too much.

(Or just get a second set of wheels with scrubs on for a TD).

And yes the 014 has been superceded by the 016, although there may still be old 014s kicking about.

Will second the road2's Thumbs Up

Last well, mine did 9k on my 02 zx6r adn there was still a few hundred left on the front.

Found them more than grippy enough for track days as well, though maybe a road2 rear with a 2ct front would be better.

The 016`S, the rear tyre has 5 compounds of rubber in it...soft at the edges for excellent grip progressing to hard in the middle so they last longer...An the fronts have 3

Another vote for PR2's Thumbs Up

The guys at FWR (London tyre dealer) reckon they are about as sticky as full on sport tyres from about 3/4 years ago, but being the dual comp you get longer wear in the middle.

Was very happy with mine and a mate got some (who likes to push his bike more than me (!)) and is well happy with them.

Have you ever used their predecessor, BT014 and know how they compare? What sort of mileage do you get from the 016?

I think when it comes down to it it doesn't really matter what tyres you get.

Got 021's on the ER-6 and even in the recent heavy wet weather I was still able to go within a CM of the edge of the tyres. The front is up for replacement soon as it's all puckered on the right hand side and has heavy wear on both sides with a raised central rib. They also last well.

Sad, I know, but here's their story with pics Embarassed

Quote:

Not got all the desired pics, but:

Michelin Road 2s 2002 zx6r J2

Fitted at last September at 18432 miles:
https://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/dsc00672.jpg

Have now covered over 5500 miles on them, including 2 half track days(3x20 minutes sessions) - one in the dry and one in torrential rain.

Most of the mileage is commuting, at a fairly easy pace (other than a S bend on the motorway Embarassed), about 20 mile each way, mainly dual carriage way/motorway and some town work:

Back:
https://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/DSC00295.jpg
https://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/DSC00296.jpg

Front:
https://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/DSC00298.jpg

By the look of them I'd say they'll both need replaced at the same time.

Had Diablo Rossos before them, quite good, though shoulders on front was badly worn after 3x20 mins sessions out on track. First reaction to riding with them was that they were slower to turn in than the Rossos, but that could've been because of how the Rossos had worn.

Right, time for a change, or so I thought. Now done around 9K on them, faultless throughout and here are some photos of the tread as is:

Front - a good few miles left in this:
https://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/road2s%20circa%209k/th_DSC00677.jpghttps://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/road2s%20circa%209k/th_DSC00678.jpghttps://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/road2s%20circa%209k/th_DSC00679.jpg

Rear - showing some damage, but close to the wear markers in the centre
https://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/road2s%20circa%209k/th_DSC00680.jpghttps://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/road2s%20circa%209k/th_DSC00681.jpg
https://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/road2s%20circa%209k/th_DSC00682.jpghttps://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/road2s%20circa%209k/th_DSC00683.jpg
https://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/road2s%20circa%209k/th_DSC00684.jpghttps://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/road2s%20circa%209k/th_DSC00685.jpg
https://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r38/hiswitsend/ZX6J2/Tyres/road2s%20circa%209k/th_DSC00686.jpg

3 track days in total and probably the majority of the miles doing this route.

Would buy another set in a minute, possibly try it with a 2ct front, but curiosity got the better of me and I', going for the Maxxis Supersport - just to see how different sticky tyres feel, if at all. Being scottish, will be asking for those road2s back, once they are off, just in case... Embarassed Wink

Said pretty much the same before. Rare I use anything but touring tyres and can still upset people on faster better handling bikes with sticky tyres. Case in point the bloke on the 02 R6 last week in black leathers going from the A2 onto the M25. He seemed a bit surprised as a top boxed ER6 went around the outside of him.

i know most people dont 'need' sticky tyre's and would be fine on touring one's but for me i like to know the extra grip is there, it's more for piece of mind i think.

I used to use pilot sport's all the time but having recently moved to diablo corsa's my confidence has grown quite dramatically, for me stickier tyre's just feel better, even though i was probably no where near the limit's of the pilot's they just didn't feel half as capable as the pirelli's do

i suppose what im trying to say is. I would rather be be using half of what a sticky tyre has to offer than most of what a touring tyre has, even if it cost's more.

Pilot Power 2CTs would be my choice.

Got 5k+ out a rear on my 900ss including 2x trackdays and commuting, plenty sticky enough too.

For a bike like that

If commuting

Pilot road 2s (got these on the sp1, good on a tour and ok on the nurburgring )

Without commuting

either Pilot Power 2cts or Diablo Corsas

probably better if you are planning more than one trackday.

I think it does matter, its just most people think you need Supercorsas for the road, when in actual fact all you need is the bum basic road tyre.

I always choose Pirelli Diablos for vaguely normal sized road bikes. My Valve has Bridgestone BT45's which have plenty of grip for me.

The key is that both tyres don't need warming under normal conditions and don't have a super sharp profile. I fail to see how having a sharp profile tyre helps on the road when with a round profile tyre the bike will turn quicker than you could ever want to.

In my opinion, just go with road tyres for a road bike and race tyres for a race bike. Even if you use your road bike on the odd trackday.
