How important are new plates to you? If you'd just put a deposit down on a brand new bike would you pick it up next week (as soon as it's ready) or wait until Sept 1st for a 59 plate?

(Edit 14-08-09)

Just got her home......sod the 59 plate Mr. Green Mr. Green
Very very very wet but a happy boy Razz

Not to me, unless i was really worried about resale and was planning on reselling it within a year or so.

Im not too fussed but I dont like it when the car is registered in for example January 2005, but the plate shows 54 because it makes it look a year older then it is- if that makes any sense lol

I was the same Dave, put a deposit down 2 weeks ago but thought stuff it, picked it up a week ago instead of waiting for a new plate. Tis a no brainer for me, I was only thikning about it's £££ value, not the pose value. Razz

Reason I ask is that on Friday I ordered a new bike and paid a £500 deposit. The dealer said it would be a few days until they could get it into the workshop for the pre-sale checks etc. That suited me anyway as I had to get a loan for 25% of the value which could take up to a week. They then asked if I wanted to wait until the 1st September for a 59plate.
Now to me that seems like madness! We live in Scotland FFS, in 3 months time we'll have snow on the roads. Maybe it matter to some folk. I guess if your planning to sell after a short period it makes a difference right enough.
I'd usually never consider buying new but with the deals going just now it makes sense.

I waited 3 extra weeks when I bought mine in Sep 07, although this was also down to my insurance situation as well with Bennets wanting stupid money so made sense to wait so I could get a new multibike policy as I kept my old bike as well.

Was quite nice having a 57 plate for a week or so, but after a while it doesn't matter - I think I only missed out on a few days riding as I was busy that month anyhow.

I'm too impatient with anything. I can't wait for things, if I get an idea into my head I want it done/bought right there and then. No way would I wait any longer than I needed to.

To me its not important.

1- its just snob factor, i dont want to be in a club with the supercharged land rovers Thumbs Down

2- IMO I think its a waste of money buying a brand new bike when you can buy the same bike 2 years later with the after market exhausts put on it buy the old owner. Thumbs Up

I'd wait for the new registrations, simply because it'll be worth more when you come to sell it.

that, or haggle a good reduction on the 09 plate. the dealer will know that in a couple of weeks they're going to have to start giving discounts on them, so you should be able to get a good discount now.

I'm paying 10k for the bike (new)with a £1250 exhaust system and a £1000 voucher for the shop I bought it from. A two year old one advertised as "sold with £1500 worth of extras", 4900miles is on ebay for £8500. The best i've seen one is £8000.

I'd rather take the new one Thumbs Up

i'd wait for the new plate. it's only 3 weeks anyway, and by the time you could pick it up it'll be less than that. part of it will be the value when you come to sell it. btu also, for me atleast, if i buy something new i want it to be NEW ... so i'd never buy a car/bike on anything other than the latest plate. and even then i'd want to pick it up on THE day it's released. but that's because i dont want to think 'hey, i have a brand new bike' and the bloke next to me to think 'meh, that's 6 months old' even if i'd just rolled out of the showroom. maybe i'm a poser/snob or whatever...i also have a private plate to go on anything that isnt new! Smile

Generally about £1000 a year which is pretty good but being italian they're effected by the weak pound/strong euro so the new price went up by £1000 this year.
There isn't a new model planned for next year so they shouldn't take a hit until the following year when they'll probably up the power.
TBH i'm not that bothered about the depreciation. I've got a few bikes in the shed already and i'm pretty sure (as sure as I can be) that this'll be a keeper.
+If i'm paying £3000 for a bike then i'll take my chances with how the previous owners have treated it but if i'm contemplating paying £8000 then i'd happily pay an extra £2000 for a brand new one (and get £1000 voucher for a new lid and new leathers for the missus) knowing it's only me who's abused it.

I guess if i was buying at the start of the year then I could happily wait for the 09 plate, knowing that we have salt on the roads until late April. However in August i have to snatch what's left of the summer.

Nope, I could have waited 5 days to have the Sprint on a 58 instead of an 08 but I really didn't see any point.

If it was the difference between a 58 and a 09 I might have, just because the perception is that it's a year older. I don't think people really care about the 0/5 thing.

Not important.

As demonstrated by my 57-plate 2008 bike. I had it off them before they could even update the software to turn the traction-control on.

"I've just paid $fuckloads for this, lemme ride it now, dammit! Gimme, gimme, gimme!"

Never thought about it. Just wanted my bike as soon as they could register and tax it - didn't even care that I would lose out on a week or two of Road Fund License.

After spending a fortune on a lid, gear, security and everything else, it didn't really seem to matter by then.

as long as you visit the legitimate DVLA site when ordering you can pick up plates from 245 quid ALL IN, no hidden fee's like other sites, no admin costs, what you see is you you pay.

that's fine and can look good if you buy a GOOD one! i have a decent one, as does most of me family - it seems to be 'a thing'.

any private plates that are crap look worse than a normal plate....so dont go buying a £245 one ... good plates for good vehicles deserve good money.
