Meh, stop whining. Yeah the guy who undertook you did sound a bit dodgy, but then we only have your story to go on.
The couple of times I rode in London on the SRAD I thought it was great fun the way there was just a swarm of bikes and scoots at each set of lights, all trying to get to the next set first, great filtering racing.
You just need to learn to filter better. |

Problem is in towns and cities scooters are seen as just been one up from pushbikes. Not real motorcycles at all.
If it wasn't for some red light traffic cameras I'm surprised any actually stop (like pushbikes don't). ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

How come you weren't closer to the kerb then so no-one could fit up your inside? That's what I always do, and that's what my test taught me too... It's no good indicating whilst in the middle of a lane, what if it had been a cyclist who you didn't hear - you would've knocked them off, (not that it would've been your fault) but there is such a thing as damage limitation! ____________________ Previous: Aprilia Habana Retro 50cc (beauty), Yamaha SR125 (fell apart), Honda XR125 (nippy little commuter), Honda SLR650 (Geewhizz), Yamaha Diversion 900S (Smoooooth) written off courtesy of a stupid escaped horse.

And as for the filtering skills, in my opinion I am bloody fantastic. ha ha ! |
Yet scooter riders are trying to get around you on all sides and you actively try and block then?
Also, do you think that because your bike has gear it's a fireblade or something?
The 125 2strokes will be significantly faster than your bike, if nothing else.
In my experience 97% of motorbike (any type) riders in London don't particularly respect other people's lanes and the like. Sure, they tend to be a bit more friendly around other bikes, but no where near the degree in other parts of the country. Remember that for a start, quite a lot of them make money by getting from A to B in the shortest time possible.
Anyway, I was in London on my zx9 at the weekend - riding around not in a hurry on Saturday (as opposed to Friday when I was in a hurry and was filtering a little more 'aggressively') and I was happy to let people past if they obviously going faster than I was (as most people who catch up will be).
From another thread, one thing I was reminded was why I thought a big bike makes sense over a little'un/scooter - I could go and green rather than amber and still easily get the 'hole shot' between and car infront, despite several scooters aiming for it, going on amber .
Oh and finally... cycle paths are most definitely 'fair game' for motorbikes - if you're not going to make use of them, expect someone else to . |

Ha ha, fair enough!! I see what your saying 'G'. I still think these particular scooter riders were in the wrong though.... there's being aggressive, and there's putting me in danger.
supZ you got a good point with the lifesavers, but as I turned my head he was right there. maybe should have looked twice!!
And yes I'm painfully aware that 125 2stroke scooters are a little faster than me, it does my tits in.... wish my bike was a fireblade ........One day soon!!!!
So Cycle paths = fair game (Noted!!) ____________________ Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. |

They probably were 'in the wrong' - but in London the majority of the riding / driving you see is people 'in the wrong' .
As I don't ride/drive through there it always reminds me how different it is to the rest of the country.
Of course, nothing like big cities in some other countries which can be quite a few levels more intense. |

Not a scooter but today a bloody great big open back truck thing undertook me at a junction and turned right, where I was about to go, forcing traffic on the main road to slow down for it. Morons drive all sorts of vehicles. ____________________ CBT February 2008 | A2 June 2008 | Yamaha YBR125 (written off) | Honda CBF125 (current) |

dafyddjohndavies: chris-red knows London traffic an awful lot better than you, I'd imagine, given that he's from not far outside of London, while you're still a relative newcomer, and only on a CBT. He's also got a point: it's mental here - get used to it. Learn the flow and patterns of the traffic before you get on your high horse.
I've lived in London all my life, and the traffic rules here seem to be vastly different to anywhere else in the country. If you want a real shock, ride around in Newham and Tower Hamlets for a bit: since most of the drivers are either unlicensed, uninsured, or not licensed to drive in the UK, you'll get a massive amount of aggressive filtering training very, very fast. Or you'll die.
Basically, my point is to just say: "Get over it". Blocking other people will only put you at risk, because there are a lot of folks around here that will shunt first, and ask questions later.
This is not intended as an attack, just a general straightening out sort of comment - we all know that scooter riders in London are tossers in the majority; pizza delivery boys are the worst, in my opinion. Learn to deal with their stupidities, and it'll make you a better rider, and once you're in a position to account for and give a wide berth to these people, everything will seem a lot better all round.
Then w can all move on to carping about cyclists that ignore red lights, and just how tempting it is to clothesline the buggers when they squeeze past you... ____________________ '10 SV650SF, '83 GS650GT (it lives!), Questionable DIY dash project, 3D Printer project, Lasercutter project |

I commute on a scooter from near Wimbledon. I hope we don't commute at the same time, as you're clearly a danger to other road users, especially those on scooters trying to overtake you.
| dafyddjohndavies wrote: | I can't wait for my bike test so I can leave these parasites in the dust. To all you good scooter riders out there that are few and far between, Get a real bike!! |
I think you'll find that a lot of London scooter commuters do have 'real' bikes, they just prefer to use the cheap and handy scoots for the rat race and leave the nice big bikes for the weekend.
Besides, even on a big bike, you'll hardly leave the scooter riders in the dust, certainly not if you both obey the speed limit. I keep seeing sportsbikes race off the line and ride into the distance at slightly/hugely illegal speeds, but I catch them up at the next set of lights. Eventually, I often find myself ahead of them, as I've been able to get into the gaps that they can't.
Maybe you should have started by riding scoots, you might have learnt how to commute safely and efficiently in London. ____________________ My other bike's a Monster... |

I ended up having a rant because 'said' scooter rider was blatantly trying to muscle through causing a potential situation that could have put me in danger and having been cut up and cut off the night before I was in a very angry mood while writing the original staterment, so Pavi and andiscooter I apologise to you for lumping you in with some of the other crazy retards out there, just lost my temper and needed a rant which has backfired and made me look like a dick head.
Most of you scooter riders I don't notice, but it only takes one (usually on a 50cc) to make you notice the riders that are dangerous and the majority of which are scooters in my personal experience, though i have seen one or two dickheads on bigger bikes.
I am still a newbie and I have a lot to learn... Let that be the end of it. |
Did you ever consider you where holding this guy up? Maybe he was trying to get past because you were blocking him filtering. I have ridden into (and out of) London 5 days a week for the last 2 years. I have never experianced a problem with scooters or any other bike cutting me up. The only trouble I do have is when people try to switch lanes coming in perpendicular to my lane. Maybe I have been lucky or maybe it is because I'm fairly fast and don't get people overtaking me often or maybe it's because I'm curtious and when people are behind me I move over and let them past. ____________________ Well, you know what they say.
