Hi, looking to buy my first bike, (Im 42) I've been to look at a KMX 125, all looks great but the seller says the bike has no battery, he didnt bother to replace it as all works ok without but I notice that when running and in neutral the oil light is flickering, it goes out when put into gear, was wondering if this is normal, if its because the battery is not present or if this is a problem?
Would be grateful if anytone can help, many thanks, Andy

my old bike used to do that when there was no battery on.

only problem being, if you put a battery on now, the alternator might be broken

On my CBR 400 the oil ight comes on in neutral and when i turn it on.
check the oil if its fine then its a wiring problem and just ignore it. just check the oil nice an regularly to make sure the bikes not misreading how much oil is in the engine. if the light stays on all the time then you need more oil

hope this helps Thumbs Up Razz Thumbs Up

Thanks for your advice, someone told me that on some bikes its normal for the oil light to come on in neutral as an indication that the oil light bulb is working? Could this be the case on the KMX? If I could be sure its not anything serious I'd buy the bike tomorrow but as im a novice and dont know anything about bikes I just feel unsure to commit myself.....
thanks
Andy

Just a thought...... Could it be because the battery is not present and the oil light or sender is finding a ground or earth through the neutral light?

Hi

Quite common on 2 strokes for the oil light to come on in neutral to show that the bulb still works.

On most 4 strokes (not Yamahas) the oil light is an oil pressure light so comes on when you switch the ignition on as without the engine running there is no oil pressure.

Most Yamaha 4 strokes use an oil level warning light, but with these they normally wire them up to come on when the ignition is on but the engine isn't running so they appear to work the same as the pressure warning lights.

All the best

Keith

Its a KMX125 guys, a 2 stroke, not a 4 stroke.

The oil light on the KMX is refering to the 2 stroke oil level in the tank. Completely different to an oil light on a 4 stroke engine, which refers to oil pressure.

It'll be flickering becuse there is no battery, but also more than likely because its low on 2 stroke oil. Dont confuse this with gearbox oil.

Oh, and a KMX doesn't have an alternator. Wink

Thumbs Up

I have had a few of the 2000/2001 kmx's they all did this, obviously both oil and neutral lights should go out once you are in any gear. If f they don't, then time to check the oil level in the 2 stroke tank under the seat or the wiring. The absence of a battery shouldn't make any difference, or it didn't on mine.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all your replies,

Barry_MC21
Are you saying that the light should come on when it requires 2 stroke oil? Shouldnt it be lit all the time then, not just when in neutral?

redline
Am I right in assuming then that this is normal when in neutral and should go out when in gear unless the the 2 stroke oil is low?

Thanks again all, if I can get to the bottom of this and its not a problem I'll probably go buy it! Very Happy

all the best,
Andy

I can now help you here Smile now were clear its 2 stroke. on my aprilia the oil light always came on in neutral, it would also sometimes flicker if the oil was moving about in the tank. your best bet is just to take a peek in the tank and look at the oil feeder pipe and make sure its all running down the pipe nicely. take it out for a test ( if the bikes fine he wont mind ) and see what the light does while your riding

Correct, my DT does it too, my speedfight used to do it when you pushed the started button, if the oil light is on at any other time thats when it means you have to refill the oil.

No it is not! It is the oil Level light. It comes on in neutral to test the bulb. if it stays on in gear it is time to fill up with 2 stroke oil.
