Which product to lube a chain ?

ok i have a white cbr 600 f1 and i currently use "chain lube" spray, which i apply every fortnight but after i apply it it sprays black crap all over my white rear wheel and takes me 2 hours to clean off.

so are there any better ways or products to lube a chain ? i know of these "scott oilers" but i dont have the spare cash for one atm, are they worth it ?

is there something i can use that wont spray allover the place ?

Old* engine oil applied with a toothbrush, leave to 'soak' and then wipe off excess with old rag.



*Of course new oil could be used too.

I use 2 chain lubricants.
Muc Off is good. You can get from Halfords. Its a dry PTFE lubricant so it wont spatter all over the place. Its goes on really wet and cleans your chain then thickens up..
But I use Holts universal chain lube mostly.
Again from Halfords.
Its bit messy to be fair, but keeps your chain well.
The Holts chain cleaner is good to.

+1 for old engine oil.

ScottOilers are very good, the only time you'll get problems with it flinging oil off is if you set the flow too high.

When ever i clean the chain, i re-lube it by pouring som ScottOil on a rag, and running the chain through it, just to leave a film of oil on he chain. Stops it rusting, and keeps fling-off non-existant. Then th oiler just keeps it nice and fresh looking

You could just buy a chain oiler. I bought a loobman a few months ago and it was the best £15 I ever spent especailly if you are crap at remembering to oil your chain on a regular basis as I am.

Just give it a squeeze before you set off and forget about it. My chain now always looks wet rather than dry or rusty and as it only puts a few drops of oil on at a time it doesn't get flung off all over the side of the bike.

I generally fill it with cheapo ASDA smart price engine oil at about 80p/litre and it seems to last forever.

Bel ray super clean chain lube? it even goes on white, doesn't fling, but if it did it'd match your wheel.

Isn't Muc off a degreaser? I wouldn't use it on a chain.

I just use heavy gear oil about 3 times a week or after riding in rain, once you do it a few times its quick, it takes me about 10 mins to lube and wipe off excess and i very rarely have to clean the chain plus it doesnt get the build up of shit in between the links like grease does. Shiny clean, the gear oils was about £3.50 and ive been using the small bottle about 2 months so far, the trick is not to pour on chain while spinning back wheel but todribble on fingers and rub onto chain then turn wheel and wipe of excess, my bike has 4300 miles now and ive adjusted the chain once, it is just a tad past the second mark on the rear adjuster so its moved about 2mm on that since i got it.

I use Rock oil chain lube. It sprays on, it flings off and I've had to adjust my chain 3 times in 20,000miles. I think I'll put up with the fling.

Used engine oil and a toothbrush for me too. Quick wipe off afterwards. Job done.
Although i can see there would be an advatage for lazy mofos using a scottoiler or the like i think it also works both ways as plenty of people will just fit one and never look at their chain properly again until it snaps!

Gp products super chain lube all the way, it cleans all the crap off it as well as penetrates and lubes it up. check um out. i know the company well, used by lots of top racing teams and magazines. give me an email and i will try and send some products over to you. cheers.

Clean and apply lube on a warm chain, so after you've come home. If not ride about for about 15 minutes.

Use an old rag and some Kerosene, then a toothbrush to get in the gaps.

Then apply Wurth High Performance Dry Chain Lube, works a treat, about 2 coats, and your chain is looking good. Make sure you leave it for about 20 minutes and then go on another 15 minute ride to get the chain warm again.

With Dry Lube, you won't get the black goo which builds up on your wheel rim. So don't worry about that

After using it, you literally won't use anything else.
