10 minute commute, which bike.....

Right, started working rather than uni and each way to work is a ten minute ride. Don't want to keep the TLR for this as it's hardly going to be opened up or even warmed up in that distance. Also whatever I have will be kept outside (half under a bike shed), and it'll just rot at the slightest bit of rain.


So I've got around 2000 to play with, but I was hoping more around the 1000-1500 area.

So far what I've been looking at is honda xr/various husqvarnas and other "off road" style bikes and supermotos.

Would these really be suitable, I mean I realise they have short service intervals, but they will be doing minimal short journeys (obviously the occaisional weekend blast, or could even give green laning a try).

Basically, what would you recommend? Am i being stupid and should I just get an ER5?

Yeah that was my thinking about a smaller off road style bike. I realise I probably could do it on the TLR, but theres no point having a 125BHP supersports for a 10 minute commute which has about 1 minute of NSL haha.

It's really just a case of trying to get shot of the TLR, no one wants it

I would suggest a bicycle but I guess you've dismissed that possibility already?

Can I be the first to suggest a CG125? If they're too gay then an XT125 would do the job. Problem with commuting on a trailie style bike is that scrotes love to steal them I've got an XT350 for greenlaning but it's great for short journeys too, I don't worry about it being used from cold as much as I do my CBR.

Yeah I had a think about a 125 and thats still a big possibility, but kinda got the idea of an off-roader/sm into my head.

I thought it would be quite a bit like that with them getting nicked. BUT, during the night it's in a remoted operated gated flat carpark with an almax on it and during the day it will be at my works carpark which is guarded 24 hours a day by security, so i didn't see it as much of a problem (touch wood).

An old 100cc, air-cooled 2-stroke such as an H100 or an RXS100 or a C90cub.

They are great fun and the fastest thing over such a short distance. No palava getting them out and such.

it depends what your 10 minute commute is like,

if it's all through town with heavy traffic then a 4 stroke 125 is going to be perfect & cheap to run

I've got a Sachs madass 125 that I use if I'm going to be in traffic, it's great fun & nips in between all the tin boxes brilliantly & it was only £1400 brand new & 100+mpg if you're not trying to thrash it every where

but if it's stretches of open road your going to want something with a bit more pep so a two stroke might be favorite, I have a derbi gpr for those trips, great fun on open roads & country lanes but murder on the wrists in stop start traffic

I wouldn't really recommend an ER5 whole heartedly, mine has rusted quite badly from the times I've had to leave it out in the rain. However they are very reliable bikes, run pretty well when they are cold and are really really easy to filter on. They aren't hugely fast but they do the job. I have heard CB5's tend to be better for surviving rust and so on, but they do seem to be more expensive.

For a 10 minute commute (and only for commuting) have a look at a scooter (>= 125cc).

Like stinkwheel said above about the C90 etc. easy to get on with.
Plus slightly better weather / road crud protection than a standard bike.
Maybe even better deal on insurance, maintenance, etc. Although you'd have to look into the exact figures.

Had same dilemma 3 years ago - moved to within 10 minutes of work. Got an XR125L (CG for lanky blokes). Perfect for town, costs nothing to run or fix etc. cover in ACF50 and ride all year round.
Only trouble is, I now find that I also often need to head off down the local dual carriageway or M-Way as the wife now has the car all the time. For this a 4t 125 is not so good. I'm now looking at a GS500 or CBF500.
