I changed my spark plug a couple of days ago, i fitted an Iridium instead of Standard.

Since that change i realised an increase in power when in 5th.

But now my bike is chugging a lot when changing gear Confused

It shudders a bit and it never used to do that, always had clean gear shifts, nice smooth acceleration and no stuttering whatsoever...

It must be something to do with the spark plug, but i'm not sure?

Another thing, i had to take my cylinder head cover off to get into the hole to unscrew the spark plug, as i didn't have a tool small enough. Which was a pain in the arse.

You don't think i disturbed anything?

This is the reason i fitted an Iridium plug, as it's such a chore to change it.

Please help guys

Thanks in advance Thumbs Up

I'm hoping to sort this out tomorrow...

By the amount of replies, i'm taking it that this is a pretty stupid post, i bet there is such a simple explanation...

I'm just not 100% with the mechanics of bikes Embarassed

Could you have disturbed the head gasket if you took off the cylinder head? Since it's under load when changing gear it could be blowing past.

Or a dodgy spark plug surely?

Laughing yeah hopefully, don't want to look like a complete idiot.

No it isn't steam powered, just oil cooled.

You don't think it's the engine oil?

Air filter?

Anything?

Thanks for the reply T0MMY Smile

He didn't remove his cylinder head, just a cover.

He wouldn't have taken off the cylinder head, just the cover.

Have you checked the sparkplug is tight enough (1/4 to 1/2 turn beyond hand tight)?
Is the lead firmly attached to the plug?
Is the plug gapped correctly?

Stick the old plug back in, any raise in power is purely imaginary. BTW it is not nesesary to take the head off to change a plug.

What would it do if i disturbed the head gasket?

It's quite weird, as i was out on my bike earlier, and it didn't chug once, then on the way home it started again. I'm shifting properly, i'm blipping the throttle when changing gear, i'm riding it correctly, just a problem mechanically.

I hope it isn't the spark plug, hate to change it again. I don't think it is as it's been starting up brilliantly, top speed hasn't lowered or increased, just the chugging every now and then...

I wouldn't worry about the head gasket, unless you took off the actual cylinder head (could see inside the cylinders) you won't have disturbed it.

Cant you get a cheap spark plug wrench to get it our easier?

I would've thought maybe an adjustable spanner might get down there aswell..

Did you get the toolkit with the bike? It should have a suitably narrow spark plug socket.

Yeah, i never saw the cylinder head, it was just the cover with the oil in and the centre hole where the plug was.

To T0MMY

I have to admit, although the spark plug was the same one, just in Iridium, it didn't seem to screw down as far as my standard one. I screwed it as far as it would go, not hand tight. I take it i need to adjust the tightness?

You mentioned 1/4 - 1/2 turn?

Really appreciating the help guys. Thumbs Up

Tighten the spark plug to hand tightness and then tighten it a further 1/4-1/2 turn with a plug spanner.

You have to be very careful not to strip the thread! Just do the spark plug up with your hand and make sure the thread's not crossed then when it's hand tight use your wrench to add another 1/2 turn.

Ah right, since i tightened it fully, do you think that is the problem, is that what tightening it to much can do?

Hopefully it will work, as getting to my plug is a pain in the arse. I'll have to invest in a spark plug spanner, just haven't got a tool which is small enough to get down the hole. The frame goes over the whole, that's why removing the cylinder head cover helps.

If you tightened it too much you may have stripped the thread from the cylinder head. Like I said, do you not have the toolkit that came with the bike?

Sorry i didn't reply to that, no i don't have a toolkit for the bike. Never got one with it.

The spark plug is in such a deep hole, it's like 10cm deep, most spark plug spanners aren't long enough to get in there.

Its a pain for how simple it is. I hope i haven't stripped the thread, but the bike runs fine, starts fine, accelerates fine and changes gear fine. Just the chugging.

I'll check tomorrow for chugging, want to sort this out.

you guys have been such a great help, thanks a bunch Thumbs Up

Cross threaded with the plug half in and sheilding flame over. That would mean the head coming off if it is what has happened.

That sounds pretty bad, what can happen when the head comes off?

The chugging doesn't make me think it's the spark plug, makes me think of fuel, or something. But it has only happened since the plug changeover.

I'll tighten it correctly tomorrow Thumbs Up hand tight, then 1/2 turn with wrench.

When you unscrew it count exactly how many revolutions it takes, then count how many threads there are on the plug. the number of revolutions should be the same as the threads. If it is less you may well have crossed it. Did it screw in easily or did you need to wind it in hard all the way with a spanner?

Well to be honest, i can remember attempting the turn with my hands, but it wouldn't budge, only my spanner could get it turning, i done it all the way, as hard as it would go. Definitely not as far down as the standard one, but it just won't go any further?? Confused
